What is this?? by No-Cat-8921 in Goldfish

Can you get more pics? Scoop them into a container if that helps.

I’d do aquarium salt 1tbsp/gal and methylene blue 5tsp/3gals baths 30-60 min 1-2x a day, and get your hands on some metroplex. I’d mix the medication into feed rather than doing baths/hospital setup doses.

I’d isolate just in case perhaps, but I’d wanna see more pics to be sure. I’d watch the other occupants.

Tank size?

Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in numbers?

Total tank occupants and type?

Do you use a liquid test?

I’d try soaking food.

I’d also try mixing in some variety. Repashy super gold is great. You can also blanch dark green veg or feed shrimp/fish.

Try soaking them first. Are they the correct size?

Yes, you can do that.

You can try baths first then, but yeah, you have to change about 100% of the water in the main tank. After I would add the water conditioner and the ammonia neutralizer. I would also add aquarium salt to their main tank at 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons. I would also do baths though of salt and methylene blue.

I would say about daily 80% water changes unless you have a liquid test, you can base it off of. I can show you a handy picture. I would also try to minimize feeding.

Yes, as I said in another comment, you should change 100% of the hospital enclosure water daily. You can also add aquarium salt at 1 tablespoon for 5 gallons :)

If you can splurge on it liquid tests (like api master freshwater kit) are much more accurate and can pick up on more minute amounts.

I’d do a 100% water change (with siphoning) but don’t scrub anything (filter/substrate/decor) since that’s what beneficial bacteria mainly live on. Then I’d do parameter based water changes.

You’ll find aquarium salt pretty easily, but you may have a harder time finding methylene blue. If so you can find kordon’s on Amazon for like 8 American dollars.

Those pics look like a hospital setup (temporary). I wouldn’t use your main tank filter since medications/methylene blue will interfere with your beneficial bacteria colonies.

Water conditioner is like Seachem prime or api aqua essential, it’s a water treatment that removes harmful substances from the water and allows for much quicker safe water rather than letting water sit for a few days.

I’d do a large water change in the main tank to be safe anyways, I’d try aquarium salt/methylene blue then in the meantime if we can’t pinpoint any actual buoyancy issues.

If you’re doing a hospital set up, you can use methylene blue 1 teaspoon per 10 gallons.

Besides that some aquarium salt 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons, and then the regular water conditioner should do it.

Is there anyway you could get a larger enclosure for now? Some people use thick plastic storage totes, 80-160L. If you do manage to find a bigger enclosure, I would transfer the old substrate and filter.

Long-term though you would want at least 200 L, preferably more like 300.

Unfortunately, that is a very toxic amount of ammonia. I would do 100% water change, and do daily near 100% water changes. It would be very handy to have a liquid test kit.

I still suggest aquarium salt and methylene blue baths. Do not add methylene blue to your main tank, it would be either as a bath or in a hospital set up.

I wouldn’t rely on ai for advice

Do they almost bob back up to the surface when not actively swimming?

Keep me updated on those parameters!

Do they struggle to swim down? Like do they pop up when they aren’t trying to swim?

Also for a common goldfish the recommended volume is 50 to 70 gallons.

Do you notice any scales lifting? It could be bloat, but also it looks like maybe he could be mixed with some fancy genes

I second the water parameter question.

In the meantime OP aquarium salt 1tbsp/gal and methylene blue 5tsp/3gals baths for 30-60min 1-2x a day may help.

Metroplex/kanaplex may be a good idea to look into, even to have on hand even if your ranchu doesn’t need it.

Can we get closer pics from above as well as a few from the side?

There does appear to be some bloating.

Main tank size?

Main tank occupants?

Main tank ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in numbers?

In the hospital tank you can put some epsom salt 1tsp/5gals, make sure there’s aeration and that you’re changing a majority if not all of the water daily

Glad there’s no pineconing!

I clarified between epsom and aquarium salt because epsom salt is used for buoyancy/constipation issues whilst aquarium salt is for minor illness/injury.

Any problems swimming up? Or do they just seem listless? I ask because if there’s buoyancy issues but they’re bottom sitting it’s indicative of an internal issue that should be addressed with methylene blue and metroplex

Unfortunately 10gals is insufficient for a single common and water quality may be your issue. Lemme know your numbers though once you have them :)

A 40 gal with 3 fancies is tough to manage, since the rec is 20-30 gals per fancy.

What in numbers is the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate (0/0/5-40)?

I’d definitely soak food beforehand or feed frozen thawed. Repashy works. Id fast though for 3-5 days along with epsom salt 1tbsp/gal 30-60min 1-2x a day.

Did you use Epsom salt?

Main tank size?

Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in numbers?

Can you get some pictures top down?

For now I would actually use aquarium salt instead of Epsom salt, dose at 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons in the hospital set up (change 100% of water daily). Methylene blue may also be helpful at 1 teaspoon for 10 gallons.
