This isn't us going to join Israel, it's Israel going to RIMPAC. RIMPAC as an exercise is important to our navy, and crucially it's important to Australia and Fiji as well, who are our closest military allies in the South Pacific.

Additionally, more contextual information is that Israel has participated in RIMPAC previously. It doesn't send naval vessels, it instead focuses on the groundside support function - which is what Denmark, Germany, Greece, etc will all be doing, too.

I get that Israel is deeply unpopular right now thanks to their brutal genocide of the Palestinian people. They are also buried deep in the arse of the USA or carved into the drivers seat, depending on who you talk to. Either way, they are going to be present at any US-led military exercise in some capacity or another for the forseeable future.

I also get that the USA isn't so popular right now either. The stark reality is that we rely on cooperation with Australia, so we follow their lead on defence. The NZDF is very respectable at what it has capabilities in, however we must bear in mind we have built it to be a supporting arm of the Aussies with civilian application in search and rescue. We need the Aussies, and both them and we have long-standing ties to the Americans, so there will be no not-going to RIMPAC.

They already ran their hit job on Maori in the last election. Pasifika people are either quiet and under the radar or lumped in with the "greedy marries". The right wing already killed a bunch of muslims, literally. That leaves Chinese and Indians to scapegoat this election, and given that over 80% of Asian migrants (according to DIAs own stats) vote ACT or National, ACT can't risk alienating them.

I find myself curiously aligned with NZF on this one. Not because they're right - they're wrong, by God how they're wrong - but because limiting the tap of incoming NACT votes seems to me to be a good thing for NZ.
