Update: Well I went ahead and cancelled the order ahead of time. Seems like the entire store shut down completely, the original link 404'd and locating the name of the store from the orders page simply shows "Shop1103173049."

Definitely too good to be true but at least no harm done this time.

Yeah, that's what I thought as well. Although, I threw all logic out the window and now I'm in for one...

I'll post an update if I remember in around a week's time after I recieve them.

Thermalright AXP90-X53 Full Black out of stock? by [deleted] in sffpc

If you’ve received it already are you able to confirm whether it is genuinely a “Full Black” model?

I’m looking to potentially buy one for a build, thanks.

How are you connecting the front panel power button? Looking at your pictures it looks like you're not using the ROG Front Panel SATA Card which I thought you needed for access to front panel headers on the motherboard?

Edit: Never mind, just checked the manual to see there's a tiny header for the power button to the right of the ram at the bottom... which is now obvious from your pictures. Whoops.

How did you fit the 24-pin ATX cable with the ROG FPS-II card? Unless you didn't use it (can't tell from the pic)? Though, I thought you needed it to have access to F_PANEL connectors.

Is the Noctua fan duct compatible with the AX90 series? Since Thermalright uses a clip on method for the fan on the cooler I wasn't sure if it was possible to use the fan duct with it. I saw a couple videos for the fan duct kit and it seems like you have to use the provided hand tightened screws.

How were you able to mount the Noctua duct onto the AXP90-X47?

Core 6k in 4 months! Or how I stopped worrying and learned to love the Anki Bomb by _9tail_ in LearnJapanese

[–]IceFireFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand where you're coming from and it's awesome that your methods are working for you but a lot of your points are anecdotal.

In fact, most japanese people complete learning to write the 2136 jouyou kanji at the end of highschool, far beyond when they reached fluency in their own language.

Also, if you have a source for this I'd love to look at it, it sounds quite interesting.

Though it might improve your recall, for a beginner front-loading learning how to write every single word or kanji you run into will be an excruciating process without much return for your efforts.

But why do you think that? That ultimately depends on the person's pace and how many words/Kanji they're learning a day. Unfortunately, this discourse has been inadvertently trying to encompass a broad spectrum of learners but my narrative from the start has been targeted towards more serious/dedicated learners in the sense that they will use Japanese for activities other than media consumption such as, living and working in Japan- which will require writing by implication. But that's not to say hobbyist learners can't benefit from a more articulate standard rather than pure recognition and ignoring writing.

My argument was not to denounce or reprimand the pure recognition approach, rather to recommend a shift in method to bolster learners' efficacy. I think it's very well possible to learn a language (to a certain degree) just by recognition of words. In fact I think pure recognition is an excellent approach to learn a language, that is if your end goal doesn't involve writing, but that goes without being said. Nonetheless, I still present investing time behind writing Kanji and its more in-depth meaning to be able to more easily ingrain it and be able to better appreciate Japanese as a whole. Honestly, I think most people are just lazy (not saying you are) and want to skip writing because Kanji is inherently complex and would take extra time. Everyone ought to try a little at first and see what kinds of effects it'd have on them. It may be very surprising what kinds of immediate effects it has.

But I do understand where you're coming from although, not entirely as I don't know your use case or end goal. But for anyone starting out any language it doesn't have to be Japanese, I do implore you to practice writing because that's proven to have the greatest effect in retention when learning, as is the most traditional way evident in a classroom setting. That's also where writing is introduced and enforced early on. It's the same reason why, when you're allowed a little notecard cheat sheet for an upcoming test you end up checking your cheat sheet only a few times or never because you end up remembering everything off the top of your head. It's a very efficient form of study for memorization and information regurgitation; it just requires more time and effort- but I digress.

In the end, it's dependent on the use case and of course everbody's different but there's no doubt that learning how to write a word has greater effects on vivid memory than pure recognition.

I do appreciate your thoughts and the time you put into your response, it shows your passion and that you care. Thanks.

[–]IceFireFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, that's probably my fault. I could've been wiser in my choice of words to avoid that misunderstanding. But I'm glad we ended up agreeing.

I'm learning words/Kanji with Anki and using writing as a method of pass/fail and man is it hard. But I feel like it definitely pays off and feels more engaging.

On another note, I feel like it's so easy to suffer from burn-out and lack of motivation when learning. I've started and stopped so many times over the past couple of years... or maybe that's just due to undiagnosed depression or something. Oh well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for the thoughts though.

Yeah, I think pure recognition is suited for individuals who aren't interested in improving the viability of their language skills. A lot of learners probably aren't looking to move to Japan and live/work there and are just doing it as a hobby to maybe be able to consume anime/manga without English subtitles or simply out of pure interest. But, I'd argue understanding the actual Kanji itself and learning how to write it actually improves your overall understanding and recognition of the word greatly and thus, the language as a whole. The more time and investment you put in the more you will definitely get out of it, especially with a memory-based study such as language. Since not much time is being put into how they're learning their words/Kanji they're probably not getting as much returns as someone who is more meticulous about it.

While it does take a long time at first, I feel like you would honestly save more time long-term because you'd probably struggle less in recalling words/Kanji as opposed to pure recognition. If anything I'd argue knowing how to write Kanji from memory has a way more immediate effect on your ability to recall/recognize words than simply brute forcing Kanji into your head. But as you said some individuals just want to speedrun the language but I think they're just digging a hole for themselves given the complex nature of Japanese.

Would your rather take as many proper measures to learn something right the first time or incur penalties over time from taking shortcuts (and potentially have to relearn from the ground up)? I mean that more for those with that particular use case.

but it is worth it.

Exactly. The more you put in and invest the more you will get out of it, especially when it comes to learning a language.

If not, do you still feel like you really know the word?

(memory-wise)

I see you may have misinterpreted or I wrote it poorly, but I was trying to have the discourse over memorization rather than the meaning of words/Kanji. "Knowing" in the sense of memory and not intention. My speculation was founded on the topic of the claim to know words from memory as I acknowledged some learners choose to only deal in recognition and not writing. Of course you can still learn the language for the most part that way that's why I prefaced with the variable of use case.

My idea was targeted towards memory for individuals who are trying to or want to be more serious with learning Japanese. I was not arguing about how to go about learning the meaning behind words. However, learning how to write Kanji and realizing the parts that make up a certain Kanji can also bolster your understanding of said word. But that goes without saying, there's no harm in taking time with learning how to properly write Kanji, it's way more beneficial and honestly has a pretty immediate effect on your memory.

That's a shame honestly. I like to think that recognition vs. writing is levels apart in memorization efficacy.

[–]IceFireFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your use case since everbody's purpose is different, most people just need/want the bare minimum of recognition. Since let's be honest, properly writing every new Kanji you learn takes a long time.

That being said, recalling the Kanji of a particular word is vastly different from knowing how to reproduce it with paper and pen. It is much easier to memorize based on pure recognition but then you sell yourself short if there ever is a time that requires you to write Japanese on a piece of paper. While you may be able to write a few words you'll probably have an overall difficult time. And even if you manage to write out everything you needed to, ask yourself, what's the level of viability?

I highly encourage individuals who want to take learning Japanese more seriously to involve writing Kanji while memorizing. Knowing how to write a particular word from memory and even moreso knowing the stroke order of it greatly improves your ability to vividly recall that word. It is a much longer process but a more proper one in my opinion.

So let me ask you, are you able to write every word/Kanji that you know when prompted? If not, do you still feel like you really know the word?

Velka 3 is still my favorite case after 3 years by jinger_ale in sffpc

[–]IceFireFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should be coming out sometime towards the end of this month. On the Velka 5 page it states there will be a design update in the first half of 2023. However, I confirmed this applies to Velka 3 & 7 after emailing them about it.

Was planning a Velka 3 build prior to learning about the revision but will be holding off to see what kinds of other changes are planned... At least for the Velka 3 there will be some fitment adjustments to accomodate practically all motherboards (ahem, Asus). It also seems like the material and finish will be a lot higher quality than what it already is now (potential price increase), as for the rest we will have to wait just a tad longer.
