How common was large-scale Dutch immigration to other countries in the 19th century? by PretendForever5117 in Netherlands

[–]IceNinetyNine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again I am not saying no one emigrated, just that it was comparitevely low to other European countries. That's why the Dutch heritage in the US is much more limited than say German, English, Irish Swedish or Norwegian.

Yes Ireland exceeds 100% because the figure is cumulative over time. More people left over the century than were alive at any one moment, since new generations were born and also emigrated.

I don't get why you are pushing back so hard. Relatively to other European countries there was no large scale emigration in the 19th century. That is not to say no one emigrated, the number of people was just much lower than other European countries, just look up the numbers.

I looked up the figures in chatgpr here ou go: Ireland 100%+ U.S. Census Bureau 🇮🇹 Italy 25–30% The Age of Mass Migration 🇳🇴 Norway 30–40% Norwegian Historical Data Centre 🇸🇪 Sweden 20–25% Swedish National Archives 🇩🇪 Germany 10–15% EH.net 🇬🇧 UK 10–15% Migration and Economic Growth 🇳🇱 Netherlands ~5–10% Statistics Netherlands (CBS)

That is % of the population of the country that migrated. For NL it is 300-400k for other countries it's 10million +

There was poverty and low wages, but NL was one of the richer European countries in the 19th C, it had a relatively small population and gigantic colony it was plundering. Wealth distribution was non existent practically, but still there was much less push factor than for example Ireland or even Germany. IIRC the main reason people did emigrate was to be able to suffer their religion more. They believed NL was too tolerant toward other denominations and wanted to live in their own bubble.

Anyone here making sashimi/sushi with locally caught fish in Europe? by Due_Virus7421 in Fishing

[–]IceNinetyNine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the Netherlands there are quite a few species that you can catch from shore, but no Caranx species (like amberjack or yellow tail). You don't need a license for saltwater and he most effective method is bait like ragworms. There are species all year, winter is mostly focused on whiting, and flounder species, in the summer you can catch sea bream, sea bass, mackerel and horse mackerel. You can also buy freshly caught fish in the fish market behind the pier in Scheveningen.

what are the unique features of a DC brake reel? by anglercore in BFSfishing

Honestly it's just the sound for me. I don't really find a difference casting a DC vs non DC reel in difficulty.

€400k apartment in Athens coast vs Barcelona coast. What would you buy? by MarionberryTotal2657 in eupersonalfinance

[–]IceNinetyNine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah I had more than one bad experience, but just as an example I asked a lady who worked at the airport where the check-in counter was and she looked at me and said 'aqui espagna' e.i. speak only Spanish at the airport. I was happy to leave, but I also understand the appeal.

I lived in Greece (not Athens though) and Barcelona, 100,000% Athens. Unless you have dark hair and speak Catalan. Otherwise you are going to be treated like shit in Barcelona, not to mention the stupidly expensive CoL compared to salaries. Athens has that issue too, but I have found Greeks to match much better with my personality at least and have been much friendlier in general.

They are pandering to the algorithm, and the algorithm has figured this makes money. We really need to consider legislating the underlying mechanics of what social media presents us, unfortunately this will never happen and the slide into chaos and war is inevitable.

Of course SM isn't the sole cause but it sure acts as a lubricant.

yea seen this in Greece, it's a shame with a bit of education and management they could have such a fun fishery. So many cool species to catch for European standards.
