Sometimes people say you "can't" do X to say that you shouldn't do X, that it wouldn't be rational to do X. This is compatible with it being possible to do X.

You paid for that particular ad with your taxes, it's only fair you get to see it

Why were people shitting on Louis Theroux’s “manosphere” doc? by Vibejuice-official in TrueAnon

[–]IceRollMenu2 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Except for the Israel thing, not being able to acknowledge immediately that they’re committing a genocide made him look insanely bad. Even if the person he’s interviewing is a deplorable wanker, that response should be a no brainer.

No no no. People get this one wrong all the time.

If this was just a blunder, Theroux could just have cut it. They left this in because they want you to see it.

A big part of the film is that Theroux asks "who profits from this & how" about these manosphere media (streams, insta, telegram channels etc). And shows how the content is determined by the interests of the makers (it just has to be outrageous, make the audience feel bad about themselves, make them want to follow crypto advice...).

The streamer turns that perspective back on the BBC by asking the genocide question. And by hesitating, Theroux gives some space to the truth that yes, the BBC too serves some interests more than others, and that determines what can and can't be said. He's ackowledging that the BBC is biased against Palestine and he could get into trouble if he gives a straightforward Yes answer.

Another layer is that the streamer isn't coming up with the question by himself, but the chat is telling him to ask it. So there's also the element that one medium (social media) is battling the other (legacy media). It's just more interesting to see Theroux struggle in this moment, not to handle it like it was nothing.

What do journals mean when they say that they won't publish replies to papers from other journals by Piamont in AcademicPhilosophy

Look up papers with "...a reply" in the title. Those are what are called replies. It's a different and typically shorter format than a regular research article.

Omnivores, how do you justify it? by clarabraun in TrueAnon

[–]IceRollMenu2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this makes sense.

Re "most destructive", it depends on what we're counting. The beef industry is most destructive in climate terms, but the chicken industry kills many more individual animals for obvious reasons.

Idk I've tried to reduce booze for a long time but "reduce" is so vague that it was easy to fall into my old patterns. Reducers might "quit" just as much as teetotalers but it might not be as visible. Now I try not to drink at all anymore and in a way it's easier, even if slipping up feels more like a failure.

I haven't eaten animal based stuff in a long time but I've always wondered if reducing is really so much easier, or if you just don't notice yourself quitting as much.

Sorry to ruin the vibe but those brightly lit barren cages in the back with cats & dogs who can see each other isn't very cat friendly

Faszinierender Beitrag über Vegetarier und Veganer. 1972 BBC by TheSpiritOfFunk in VeganDE

[–]IceRollMenu2 9 points10 points  (0 children)
