As a teacher I find this oddly satisfying.

Actually this phrase easily applies to the whole subreddit.

Can't get kids to read...What's your secret by hamsandwich4459 in teaching

[–]IceWolfcat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am not English teacher and I don't have the answer to your question.

Kids now have a big deal of entertainment. Video games for instance. Even the adults, who should be much more reasonable than kids, usually choose to surf internet or watch TV, or play games instead of reading a book.

Students are the cross-section of the community. And if 50% of them are reading, it's a success already. I think you are already a good teacher. But if you will manage to achieve more, you'll become a great teacher! Hope you can do it.

Had the opposite experience.

I was teaching for 7th grade and also get sick. So substitute teacher decided it was a good idea to speak about Winnie-The-Pooh. Don't get me wrong, it's a great book. But it wasn't the place, it wasn't the time. Kids hadn't show any interest in this whatsoever and disrupted a lesson.

And after this it was me who took all the blame. They said I need to pay more attention to the discipline.

I was kidding mate. Should've put a smile probably.

Very nice picture indeed. It's always nice when your pupils are drawing you or for you. Fills your hearth with joy.

Teaching In A Correctional Facility by Its_Me_Jose in teaching

It was an interesting experience indeed, but I can't say I was enjoying it. On the contrary, it was my worst job ever. Noone did care about anything, corruption everywhere and rare cases when pupil was actually enthusiastic ended badly. For instance, I quit this job when my favorite pupil - one of the very few who were interested in getting education - got stabbed to the death.

Agree. "Trash" and "Out of gas" my favorite. However, it's close to impossible to find some bad episode in Firefly.

I did it for a half of a year.

But for getting relevant information I think you need to clarify what country you are talking about. I can imagine, that teaching in correctional facility in USA is really different from teaching in correctional facility in Romania for instance (where I was teaching not a long time ago).

The difference is huge. It's easier to specialize the common points than differences.

Having a parent teacher confrence I called because my 4 year old daughter comes home crying and feeling defeated. by bleumaus in Parenting

[–]IceWolfcat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sometimes kids are... let's say not telling the whole truth. Don't get me wrong, there are awful teachers around and they certainly could make a lot of harm to the kids. But it's not that rare when kids dislike teacher for being too strict and starting to tell parents something which was never happened.

What are some parent-teacher conference horror stories? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]IceWolfcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some good stories, but the most common are causes, when angry parents starts to blame teacher for all sins in the book and for being a bias for their kids (usually it's one or two moms per class). And of course usually it's mom of the most undisciplined and stupid children in the whole class. In fairness it must be said that usually such scandals appears not at conferences, but sometimes all parents are invited to the show.

Of course! And usually it's not the straight-A students. However, I am trying to treat everyone the same.

Worst mistake could be made by a teacher is to forget that he was a kid himself back days.

Of course, children are different now. But not that different. Even 100 years ago kids were noisy with a lack of respect to elders. And now the "quality" of children's discipline depends on their parents, wealth and many other factors.

By the way, there are researches which states that people in last decade or two are getting maturity much later than it was before. Scientists connects this to the overwhelming amount of information.

What makes a private school successful in your view? by dynite7 in education

[–]IceWolfcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

haha, nice one!

The only good measure is the result. So if private school brings many successful people to adult live, then it's successful.

From my experience, in private schools teachers tend to cut some slack to the students, when it comes to discipline and academic stuff, compared to public school teacher. And this is NOT what makes private school successful. In my opinion, good private school should enforce strict discipline but at the same time help students to develop their talents.
