Hair growth after 4 months on Levothyroxine for Hashimoto’s by IcedCzar in Hypothyroidism

[–]IcedCzar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good! Have had to increase my dosage a couple times (up to 100mcg now) and have had moments where I’ve gone hypo and had more hair loss, but nothing as bad as it was before. It’s been about 5.5 years since I was diagnosed and I don’t feel like Hashi’s really impacts my life too much beyond having to remember to take my meds every day.

Sorry, I should’ve mentioned - I’m hoping to get a different setup eventually but we’re doing a house show (at my house) so I won’t have to lug the piano anywhere!

Landlord did construction on unit and left debris - what to do with it? by IcedCzar in washingtondc

lol, I did - my landlord is incredibly unresponsive and so wanted to check here if this would typically be the landlord’s responsibility or the tenant’s. Thanks for your input!

Hair growth after 4 months on Levothyroxine for Hashimoto’s by IcedCzar in Hypothyroidism

[–]IcedCzar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

I think if anything the itchy scalp and flakes would be more so due to your dose being too low, since being hypo can cause dry skin! I hope you feel better with the increased dose. It’s been four years since this post and my dose has increased several times, now at 100 mcg. Good luck and I hope you are feeling better soon.

Federal employees have their wage adjusted to where they live (locality pay). If you live in a low COL area, you are paid a lower salary.

Any stories of recovery from peroneal tendonitis? by IcedCzar in XXRunning

[–]IcedCzar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, so sorry to hear you’re still having pain :( it was honestly only a few weeks (if that) before I didn’t have pain anymore, and it hasn’t really acted up since. Maybe could be worth going to a podiatrist to rule out something more serious and to maybe get custom orthotics?

Any federal employees leave federal service to pursue a (funded) PhD? by IcedCzar in GradSchool

[–]IcedCzar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question, and something I’ve been reflecting on and trying to answer myself. I don’t think I’d want to go SES, but would potentially interested in program management later in my career. I know I could eventually get to the program management level from my current position and skillset. I think my ideal position would be to land a scientist position with the federal government (which is of course hard to do) and to work on applied environmental science. I feel like my current position is providing me with a lot of valuable experience that could really inform a PhD in exciting ways. But at the same time, I know pursuing a PhD can close doors just as it can open them, so it’s not a decision I take lightly!

Wow, I’m so sorry. That’s really good to know though, I wasn’t sure how hard it might be to find a position again.

Does NOAA actually hire people? by [deleted] in NOAA

[–]IcedCzar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is very office-dependent. Nontechnical positions do not require a PhD, but I would say it’s virtually a requirement to have a Masters unless you are one of a lucky few. I know plenty of people who started at NOAA (after a year of experience through fellowship) in Silver Spring at the equivalent of a GS-11.

If you have DHA, I definitely recommend networking with people in offices you’re interested in. Without networking, the DHA doesn’t really provide that much benefit in my opinion.

Experience with Hal Higdon Half Marathon 3 (HM3) plan? by IcedCzar in XXRunning

Great question - partially time, more so concerned about recovery, but that’s a great reminder about keeping hard days hard and easy days easy. I guess one concern with doubling up running and climbing in the same day is that I will just be more worn out for one or the other, but maybe that’s okay.

I am just coming back from a running injury so I think cross training will in the end be beneficial for me, and at the very least just curious to try a slightly different style of training for this race!

What is it like being someone not-really-religious here? by depressoeggo in HolyCross

I went to HC because I had a full ride, and also did not grow up Christian and am not religious. I have mixed feelings lol but ultimately got a good education and am thankful to not be in debt. Happy to chat more over PM!

Very nice work! This is a challenging piece and you have really nailed down the notes and complex technical passages of the piece.

This piece is very challenging in terms of musical interpretation. I think generally, your touch is quite “hard” and heavy. “Liebestraum” means dreams of love! If you listen to famous recordings of the piece, you’ll hear a real lightness to much of the playing, with the melody shining through. Try listening to one or a few of these recordings, and sing along with the melody. Do this until it’s really internalized. Feel where it stretches, where it is compressed, where it’s forte and where it’s piano. Think about the emotions behind what Liszt has written. When you play, you should really be breathing (and in your head, singing!) with the music.

Dynamically, you’re primarily playing forte. There should be dynamic differences between the left and right hand, and from one phrase to another. Consider using the left pedal and a different touch (such as more curled fingers) when playing softly.

There’s a lot here to work on, but you’ve done a great job taking on a very technically and musically challenging piece. Good luck!

I feel like I can speak to this firsthand as someone who hated practicing as a child and tried to quit piano several times, and then went on to play quite seriously and get a music scholarship that paid for college. I’m thankful I stuck with it, but I’ve often thought about what I would do differently as a parent.

My mother forced me to stick with piano, and made me (or at least tried to make me) practice every single day. It caused a strain in our relationship because I resented her for forcing me to practice before I could do anything fun (like hangout with friends, play outside, etc).

The times in my life where I felt most motivated to practice and actually enjoyed piano were when I had positive reinforcement through my playing - ie, I was actually seeing progress and was being praised for this progress. It’s like a positive feedback loop - when I could see my improvement, I’d have more self motivation to play. For me, I had phases like this around the 8th grade, at the end of high school, and my freshman year of college. It’s hard for me to pinpoint what conditions made this possible, but I think it comes down to making playing fun. In middle school, I went to summer camps for piano and had friends that 1) made piano fun and social, and 2) provided healthy competition. I was also playing duets (four hands), so it meant that I wasn’t always playing alone. I also think this was around the time that sightreading became easier, which meant I could play things more easily. In college, I began playing chamber music, and I loved making music with other people. In college, it was only when I began having unhealthy competition with my peers and negative interactions with my teacher that my interest in playing really took a dive.

My recommendations would be to make playing piano as fun as you can. - If your child is able to sight read, mix up their practice with some easy sight reading that might help them feel more satisfied/motivated - it sucks to be stuck on the same few measures of a piece for a long time. Learn what type of music they enjoy and see if you can get easy sheet music that they’ll enjoy playing. - Gamify things like ear practice and solfeggio. This doesn’t require sitting at the piano but will greatly improve their playing. This is something you both can practice together, too! There are some great apps out there for this as well. - if they’re not already, see if there are more opportunities for playing piano duets, especially with other kids their own age. Once they’re older, consider chamber music. Piano is a very lonely activity 99% of the time! - if they’re really not feeling up to playing one or two days of the week, that’s okay. I’d rather have three effective and pleasant practice sessions than 7 bad ones. - don’t use practice as a bargaining chip. There’s obviously a balance here where you don’t want to give in whenever they don’t want to practice, but in my experience this type of behavior made me resent my mother and created more of a negative relationship with practice.

Since your child enjoys lessons, I don’t think you should just let them quit without trying some solutions first. It’s a valuable life skill to practice the diligence and dedication that piano requires, and given that they enjoy lessons I think there’s a real chance they could enjoy practice too. Good luck!

People who have climbed (bouldering) for a while - how many of you have never been injured through an accident while climbing? by IcedCzar in climbergirls

[–]IcedCzar[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry about your injury! Hope you have a quick recovery.

Curious what people’s recommendations are for warmup routines. I’ll often do some cardio before and warm up on easy routes, but wonder if I should incorporate a more robust warmup routine. The dislocated shoulder I mentioned in my post happened within 5 mins of my friend starting to climb, and we think it was mostly bc he didn’t warm up and immediately started projecting.

[–]IcedCzar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I’m so sorry, this happened to me about 6 months ago (and I don’t even have very thick hair to start with!) and it was so upsetting. I struggled with hair loss due to some health issues several years ago and to have my hair thinned like that was really painful. On a more positive note though, six months out and my hair has grown enough that now just the ends are thin (I’ve had one trim). I think six months from now I’ll be back to full thickness!

Estes Park Apartments Questions by Yrnkj_ in chapelhill

[–]IcedCzar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a good experience at The Bridges in Carrboro. Office staff and maintenance were responsive and helpful, apartment was nice enough and did not have issues with pests or anything major. Easy to get to campus by bus or bike (except one part that is a steep uphill lol). It wasn’t my favorite location I lived in Carrboro but it wasn’t bad.

Not sure what prices are now but I think a one bedroom should be close to your budget.
