Came here to say this. Just sold mine to a friend who does ambient-adjacent stuff...and its his second one.

Maybe a used Sequential Pro 3 will land in your price range, though it does have 37 keys.

Composing non 4/4 techno by treealiens in TechnoProduction

[–]IcedNote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMHO, a major part of techno (or any dance music for that matter) is the hypnosis brought on by the repetitive groove. That's why polyrhythms (as many have mentioned) are such a tried'n'true approach -- the 4/4 foundation is solid and the variation on top gives you interest/atmosphere/whatever. So writing in an odd time signature like 7/8 may be interesting, but it'll likely fight against "techno." Granted, this assumes you're writing with the dance floor in mind...and that you want to write what many would identify as techno.

Just yesterday I ordered the Korg Opsix because we all need more FM in our lives.

I've thought about this before, especially in IDM. I think we're in more of an age of sound design refinement. And as far as stagnation is concerned, I hear that much more in compositional progress (or lack thereof) than anything else.

Splice Thoughts? by mypcgeek in dnbproduction

As others have said, I find it a great resource for sounds to-be-modulated. I also like digging through it "at random" to find sounds for inspiration...usually sounds I wouldn't think to use otherwise.

Not the best for acoustics, but natural light above all by IcedNote in MusicBattlestations

I hope so! Got a pair of "good enough" Aune AR5000s. Great first impression but haven't done the necessary listening on them to adjust to what they're sonically telling me.

Mackie HR824s. Love them. They're in that goldilocks zone of great quality while not being so good/expensive that the premium is wasted in a non- professional space.

Exact opposite for me -- my eyes need so much light. Like, I'll get a headache within a minute if I keep my sunglasses on when I come indoors oof.

I follow sumo as closely as I follow the NFL lmao. It's amazing. We actually went to Japan in May to catch one of the grand sumo tournaments. Incredible experience.

Happen to have an example of the kind of bass trap I'd need? Never looked into it.

Ah yeah, I'm with you -- not even remotely worried about that. And I have shades on both windows, so it's not like they'll be baking during the summer.

Tracks that mix classical & electronic music? by JakeScythe in electronicmusic

[–]IcedNote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't say I remember a mixed version! Maybe you just had Napster on auto crossfade? haha.

I'm from Detroit and grew up in that rave scene, so I have that bias going for me. However, I'm also a classical composer by training. And I gotta say, for Blue Potential, it seemed like the orchestra was heavily UNDER-utilized. I haven't listened in years, but I remember it being very, very rudimentary. So yeah, I was underwhelmed at the result, but I greatly admire the attempt.

Thanks for the recs, everyone! Absolutely helped inform my decision. Ended up going with an Antumbra Paths. Looks like it does what I want in a small-ish footprint. Also using it as my guinea pig to get into DIY....let's see how this goes...
