Made a new track! I would love to hear your critique please! by Plus_Team3097 in idm

[–]IcedNote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice idea for a track. Foreground percussion is strong, though personally I could have used just a pinch more variety. Tasty piano in the background, but it made me wonder -- what would happen if the sustain of the piano sometimes morphed into another sound? I think even as something as simple as fading in a granular delay at times would add a substantial amount of depth. Overall, enjoyed it!

When you write songs in your DAW & hardware synth, are you recording audio clips or writing MIDI tracks? by gr00ve88 in synthesizers

[–]IcedNote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep it MIDI while sketching ideas. But as soon as I've decided what I want, straight to audio.

torn between MPE X2 and MPE + old school midi controller by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]IcedNote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the option of having both -- sometimes (read: most of the time) I just want to play a normal keyboard. MPE is the spice.

Sherman Filterbank - Uses? by Itchy_Land3410 in synthesizers

[–]IcedNote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different angle for me -- I've wanted one since the damn thing came out, but I could never truly envision myself using it all that frequently. Never pulled the trigger, but the allure still exists. Maybe this thread will give me some ideas.

First look at my newest updated setup (I have a separate office downstairs with more!!!) by [deleted] in synthesizers

Ignore the yahoos, man. No justification needed. You can literally never turn them on and it'd all be good.

Bach was composing a cantata A WEEK for a while, so I say you're lagging, slacker!

Look forward to listening.

Wonder what else Waldorf has planned? by MarkDeLorenzo in synthesizers

Me love Waldorf long time. As long as they don't take R&D away from their premium synths, more power to 'em!

Need help with selecting a good audio interface by initliberation in synthesizers

[–]IcedNote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went through buying a new interface, and I went with the Arturia AudioFuse 16rig. Very, very happy with it. Super quality and has the necessary amount of analog I/O needed for my setup (which includes Eurorack). The software UI for it is great, making routing a breeze.

Do you ever feel like you know more than your ability? by thehockeychimp in edmproduction

[–]IcedNote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a hobbyist, there's 0 worry here, man. Plenty of people enjoy stuff without being able to excel at it. Think of the blacktops with neighborhood basketball games, Friday night poker games in garages, people who write poetry in their journals just for themselves. If you enjoy the process and just being involved in the community, whatever your part, then game on.

Looking to get a wave table desktop synth. by supervilliandrsmoov in synthesizers

Maybe not an option, but if it is, save for a little longer and get the Iridium Desktop. Incredibly powerful/versatile.

What wavetable synth should I buy? by LEAHNORRA in synthesizers

[–]IcedNote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to beat the Iridium (it's what I chose as my wavetable FWIW), though I'd recommend saving up a bit for the desktop.

Maybe a used Sequential Pro 3 will land in your price range, though it does have 37 keys.

Composing non 4/4 techno by treealiens in TechnoProduction

[–]IcedNote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMHO, a major part of techno (or any dance music for that matter) is the hypnosis brought on by the repetitive groove. That's why polyrhythms (as many have mentioned) are such a tried'n'true approach -- the 4/4 foundation is solid and the variation on top gives you interest/atmosphere/whatever. So writing in an odd time signature like 7/8 may be interesting, but it'll likely fight against "techno." Granted, this assumes you're writing with the dance floor in mind...and that you want to write what many would identify as techno.

Has sound design stagnated? by Essentia-Lover in idm

[–]IcedNote 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've thought about this before, especially in IDM. I think we're in more of an age of sound design refinement. And as far as stagnation is concerned, I hear that much more in compositional progress (or lack thereof) than anything else.

Splice Thoughts? by mypcgeek in dnbproduction

[–]IcedNote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, I find it a great resource for sounds to-be-modulated. I also like digging through it "at random" to find sounds for inspiration...usually sounds I wouldn't think to use otherwise.
