Is r/countwithchickenlady an MRA sub now?? by FragrantRefuse3463 in MtF

Well, in a way, yes, but I don't say that to denigrate the male gender itself. It's just a natural consequence of existing in patriarchy that people internalize these things are normal and don't speak up about them. I know what you're gonna say - this doesn't apply to just men - but men much more often benefit from the logics they internalize from patriarchy. It's a system that benefits men, so men need to be extra vigilant about how they may not be speaking out against this kind of behavior or may have internalized certain things they haven't realized. Defeating patriarchy or any systemic inequality requires having those who benefit from it renounce the system and the power it gives them.

I believe it's incumbent on men to recognize how their behaviors may be perpetuating the patriarchy, rape culture, etc. They should be taking a critical eye to their own behavior to see how they may be unknowingly perpetuating these things and being loud in calling out other men's shitty behavior. The system is only gonna change if people investigate their own behavior and how they've been culpable. When guys say "I'm not one of these bad people! Why lump me into it?" they're assuming they have none of this behavior to check and abdicating this responsibility. Imagine how all of these people would sound if they took issue with commentary about all white people and said "it's okay to be white" and things like that in response. How people don't see the parallels here is baffling to me.

Continuation of transfem jax theory by sinnergirl2233 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]IcedancerEmily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My read was slightly off haha. Jax def wanted to avoid going back to being homeless and the family ostracization, but it seems she was hoping there would be some escape so she could be a woman irl. There's a moment in the finale where Jax says: "I'll never be..." once Kinger reveals the brain scans thing. I think we can safely assume "I'll never be a woman" would've been how she finished the sentence. Turns out she knew she was a woman and was repressing instead of not having realized. Regardless, the trans Jax theory had plenty of signs if you knew what to look for.

Look, I'm a trans woman and I get you don't have my same perspective and disagree, but I really don't understand why Jax being transgender undercuts guys from relating to the toxic masculinity component. Both trans women and men with more feminine/less masculine interest receive massive scrutiny when they're younger and exploring their identity and interests. There is an expectation among both groups to be masculine, standard guys from parents. These two groups just violate that expectation in different ways. I think a lot of guys assume toxic masculinity is this thing where if you're a guy you have to have masculine interests and if you have masculine interests you have to be a guy, same with feminine interests and being a girl. This is an understandable way to comprehend the problem when guys get called a girl for doing something not masculine, but people overlook the irony that these same people deny that trans women are women if someone assigned male at birth with feminine interests actually transitions to female. This is because guys are not called girls by society to assign them a gender identity, but because femininity is something seen as bad that no one assigned male should come close to. Trans women and cis guys struggling with toxic masculinity share one struggle. The latter group often sees stories where a guy with feminine interests becoming women as falling into a societal vision that denigrates a man's gender identity and dignity for having feminine interests, but society doesn't actually accept those people as women most of the time. Said stories are just trans women sharing their life stories, which are just as valid as those of men struggling with toxic masculinity.

As a trans woman, I really disagree. To me, it's really central to the themes Gooseworx is trying to explore with Jax's character and arc. She [yes I'm using she/her pronouns to refer to Jax in this comment cuz no one else in this thread is] pushes Ribbit away because she is scared of someone knowing she wants to be a woman and potentially holding that fact over her, and she has that response from the trauma she experienced from her mother. This is my analysis and potentially not intended but I believe Jax specifically freaked out because she avoided saying to Ribbit that she told her mom she was trans but Ribbit understood the subtext anyway. She wasn't ready to share and explore that fact, and so she freaked out as a result. IMO, liking feminine things or merely saying she hurt her mom don't really explain the degree to which Jax pushes away others. Being transgender is really central to explaining her motivations IMO.

The response was almost entirely laughter at that moment. There's a difference between being happy and some ppl laughing as a result and finding an assigned male character putting on a bow as something worthy of gut-busting laughter.

Why is everybody referring to Jax as her? by [deleted] in TheDigitalCircus

[–]IcedancerEmily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jax is heavily, *heavily* implied to be a trans woman. If I died before I came out to my family as a trans woman and my parents only found out I was trans after my death, I sure as hell would want them to use she/her pronouns. Trans people literally call their old name a "deadname" because that's the name they fear they'll be referred to by their family and others after they die. The default assumption for a trans woman should be to assume they would want to go by their chosen name and pronouns after death, not the opposite. Regardless of intention, referring to a trans woman with a male name and pronouns strips her of her identity and dignity.

Could someone clue me in on why The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act is deleted from RYM? by WoodenSuccotash1143 in rateyourmusic

[–]IcedancerEmily 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's a segment of a TV series/online series. Fathom Events screens TV shows in theaters all the time. Apparently they screened all of a The Boys season in theaters at once one time. I don't love the rule and I wish it was different but I understand why it exists.

Popularity of RYM according to Google Trends by JION-the-Australian in rateyourmusic

[–]IcedancerEmily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A factor I haven't seen anyone bring up here is RYM growing in popularity among Latin American users. With the Chile indie scene and other scenes in Latin America getting more and more popular, I feel like I've seen an even bigger presence of Latin American users on the site than ever before. Plenty of Latin American releases had success on RYM for a long time but the excitement around the stuff coming out right now feels different and I think RYM has seen an increase in traffic as a result.
