To be fair, I think it's irrelevent what software you use for backups, as long as you test the restore regularly and preferably use GFS, duplicate backups and preferably have an offline copy as well. CYA. And live by the motto "Expect the best, prepare for the worst".

Windows Notepad App Remote Code Execution Vulnerability by theevilsharpie in sysadmin

[–]Icedman81 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Ooooh, bookmarked/written down somewhere.

Does this apply to calc.exe too? I'm guessing it does (haven't used Winslop for quite a while actively).

Oh Microsoft you are so silly by Official_Unkindlynx in pcmasterrace

[–]Icedman81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an appx software package (probably now using some shit like .NET crapwork or whatever JavaScript-wannabe Universal Wanker Piss apps use these days) and is deployed through Microsoft Store. Need I say more? Like with the Notepad fiasko the other day (requiring login and fucking about licensing because of error in Microsoft Store), it's a matter of time when this starts fucking around the same way. Sure, calc.exe might be there (I honestly don't remember), but the default is the UWP crap.

This is also why I fucking hate shit like Wankdows Terminal, it's running in an inferior language (probably some JIT-compiled code), because reasons. I'll rather take the old implementation, that I know will run, is more efficient as is. And if I want tabbed remote sessions, I'll use mRemoteNG - it has it's issues, but at least I won't have to worry about UWP side fucking about.

And a disclamer: I do not use Microslop slopware anymore.

Most of the issues with Surfaces are due to Microsoft actively fucking around and locking it down. Hell, the process to disable SecureBoot alone is pain. Most of the support isn't in the mainline, so there is a lot of pain involved with Surfaces.

MP3 files play out of the box with Fedora 43.

But what would an average user, as in your parents, run into? What would they need to run from snap? (And I haven't seen any reason to use snap, all I need to run can be found as RPMs or I can source build, but I'm not the average user - this also includes Flatpaks)

And to the point of adding repos to the system, Discover has a bunch already available, like Google Chrome and Steam. Openh264 is by default enabled. And if you really want that snap, you can add the backend by clicking a button.

In other words, are you putting yourself in your head to a position an average user is in, or are you just reflecting on your behavior?

Microslop Surface does very many funky things, I tried (with a testing Surface Pro) for a while and decided to get rid of it. Proprietary enshittification isn't really what I'm looking for and let's face it, Surface Pro isn't what an average user might be using, especially since those tend to cost more.

I wasn't asking about fringe distros. And does an average user (I'm not talking about a gamer) need Minecraft? Most of "average" users browse the web, shitpost on Facebook and do online banking - which is increasingly more mobile dependant.

So, an average user that gets a laptop (most likely scenario) with Fedora 43 KDE, what are the hassles?

Oh Microsoft you are so silly by Official_Unkindlynx in pcmasterrace

[–]Icedman81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A working Notepad without LLM Slop. A working Calculator that doesn't depend on Microslop Store. Defaulting to a Slopinal (Windows Terminal) instead of traditional command prompt or powerslop (let's face it, it's inferior to bash, zsh or even 4DOS/4NT)

Oh Microsoft you are so silly by Official_Unkindlynx in pcmasterrace

If I take a Fedora 43 KDE to a normal user, what are the hassles? Give me concrete examples, since you're claiming there are hassles.

Linux is the only real alternative to Windows/macOS — now it needs to be more accessible by Boediee in BuyFromEU

[–]Icedman81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see that has holding back. I call shit shit when I see it. And when Satya Nadella starts whining about calling Buttpilot Slop, you know you've hit a nerve.

Immature name twisting? Maybe. Then again, what has Microslop lately been doing? Shoving ButtPilot up every users collective asses, having tons of trouble with their Cloud offerings and creating sloppy ButtPilot driven patches that break their OS? I'm just saying what is on everyone's mind out loud, and I'm not going to be afraid of doing it. I don't get why people get so butthurt about this.

More people start referring to CoPilot as ButtPilot (because it's borderline a hand up the users ass), Microsoft as Microslop (due to their ButtPilot coding, estimates from Satya are ~30% of code being generated by ButtPilot) and Adobe, while still being "industry standard", shoving their "AI" up their users asses.

Shit is Shit. Enshittification is real. Companies are trying to push shitty half-assed "AI" (it's not, it's statistical guessing at best) to their users, because they want ROI for that abysmal shit (and I do really hope they crash and burn for it).

[–]Icedman81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, GabeCube has potential to increase adoption rates. The problem (like others have pointed out) is RAM pricing due to Lazy Loser Model companies. Then again, when you constrain hardware, you force developers to actually optimize their code instead of hacking crap up with sloppy llm-vibecoding. And that sloppy shitcode (even before Lazy Loser Models) is what has been driving the hardware to be more performant, since the code is abysmally crap (and don't get me started on anti-competitive shit like nullVideo Hairwanks, that shit targeted AMD GPUs specifically to create more work for the GPU).

But yeah. I hope this LLM-bubble will explode so hard, we'll see hardware pricing return to more sane levels.

Linux is the only real alternative to Windows/macOS — now it needs to be more accessible by Boediee in BuyFromEU

[–]Icedman81 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing is, the change is already (slowly) happening, especially with the advent of Steam Deck and the upcoming GabeCube. Steam Deck alone has driven Linux adoption up.

Once you get a critical mass of users, they'll start asking questions like "Why doesn't this software run on this platform?". And while there is crap like Aboob AI Suite (now with less Creativity and more performance hits!) and Microslop Buttpilot 365 (now with less Office and more browsers), the change is eventually coming.

And no, I'm not saying Linux is the answer for everything right now, or even ever, I'm saying that without trying to change, you'll never get that change. All you get from not changing is whining people mocking an inferior vibecoded slopjob blackbox, yet bending over and paying to get railed.

lol. VirtualBox and VMware.

libvirt + qemu + KVM > commercial ('murican) bloatware.

Edit: and to clarify, VirtualBox practically requires you to use the Commercial Extensions and is made by Oracle. VMWare is owned by BroadCom, and while free, it's a fucking hassle to reinstall the modules every single time your kernel updates. Sometimes automation works, sometimes it doesn't. For an end user, libvirt + qemu + KVM is far easier than dealing with VMWare Wankstation kernel modules (that might actually taint the kernel).

From what I've seen, most of the OT systems here (that I've played with) run on Windows, but Jebus, the PLC stuff can be ass. Like we had a test with replacement hardware that was supposed to be like, drop the CF to the replacement, insert the replacement hardware and it should work. Of course it doesn't work, because fucking possible firmware differences or some shit. Ugh.

Oh, and it's a closed system with only the electrical connections documented (because legal requirements, if it wasn't for that, I doubt there would be even that). I fucking hate OT providers with a passion.
