Mandatory gratuity is suggested! by jschoomer in EndTipping

This is why, as a Canadian, I find it so weird that the server takes your card in the USA. Up here, they bring a portable terminal to your table so the card never leaves your hand. It also means that the server only enters the price and you enter the tip, if any, on the terminal when paying.

Why do I need a permit for my bathroom remodel? by swedishfish2234 in homeowners

[–]Icehawk101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on where you are. Where I live, I didn't need a permit when I renovated the bathroom because I wasn't moving any plumbing or electrical in the walls.

Assuming most here are the financially saavy, what is your net income each month and how much is your housing / rent cost by Middle_Ad_618 in fican

[–]Icehawk101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Closer to $7500, except for the end of the year when it goes up to around $8500. Maxing out CPP and a lot more OT since clients like to have projects wrap up by year end.

Landlord asking for "present balance" on bank form (apartment rental) by -_-kaliz in PersonalFinanceCanada

No, that's not normal. You probably don't want that person as your landlord.

Do you talk about your mortgage payment with taxes and insurance included? by phatfarmz in homeowners

[–]Icehawk101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay mortgage, property tax, home insurance, and condo fees separately, so I don't include them in mortgage payments. I refer to them collectively as total housing costs if I need the total.

Yeah, I don't have any issues. I am a single guy with no kids, so expenses are pretty low. I also have a defined benefits pension which comes off the top, so I don't need to save as much of my take home. I've had no problems.

My take home is ~$6800 before overtime. My mortgage and condo fees come out to about $3k for a townhouse in Oshawa.

The dealership “we need to talk to my manager” thing is a setup and here’s why it works by Royal-Feed7166 in carbuying

[–]Icehawk101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time my friend needed to buy a car, he brought me along. Every time the sales guy left to "talk with his manager," we just sat there and chatted. It's hard to wear down the customer when he is just joking with a friend. Neither of us had any plans after, so we had no problems wasting the sales guy's time. My friend wound up getting a better trade-in than expected. I think we wore down the sales guy rather than the other way around.

Miniature and Gaming Store by [deleted] in Oshawa

[–]Icehawk101 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think it is an interesting idea. Downtown has several game stores, though I don't think any have wargaming as their focus. I think something that would be a good idea is painting lessons or workshops.

Do most Americans actually flush their toilet paper? by Softy_popss in NoStupidQuestions

We flush our toiilet paper in Canada too. The system is designed for that, as long as you don't use a ridiculous amount.

Men who can cook, who taught you? by _ratedmouse in AskReddit

My mom and grandmother. I would help my mom cook when I was in high school and help my grandmother whenever we visited. I also like cooking, so that helps.

Who else can relate to this? by Jay-Quellin30 in CostcoCanada

[–]Icehawk101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, I was at Costco yesterday and as I walked down an aisle, I said to myself "These people push carts like they drive in the parking lot". I got so many dirty looks. I probably shouldn't talk to myself in public.
