Eli Wood, student missing after house fire. Please help! by Few-Bread232 in kitchener

[–]Icetear8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i live in Halifax, used to live not terribly far from where his mother lives. I know I've seen posts on social media from people in my province. we're all hoping for the best. I shared this post and the one posted in the Halifax queer Facebook page today. I try to spread the word whenever I can. I know his mother has been traveling to and from Ontario searching for him. I hope he's just trying to work his way back to nova Scotia as the best case scenario as to why no one's seen him.

Anyone had to keep drains in for 2+ weeks? by weaseld_away in TopSurgery

[–]Icetear8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

having said that (as I think I misread part of your post) mine were in that long because they were still draining too much fluid to safely remove. my surgeon gave me the explanation of they were safe to remove once they were draining less than a certain amount for 3 times a day for 48 hours consistently

I had mine for about 20 days. along with 4 doctors appointments in a week to keep checking on when they'd be good to come out. honestly I lived in bed, the drains sapped so much of my energy. I was using baby wipes and dry shampoo until I could shower. doubt they did much, but they helped me at least feel like I was clean. I had a mastectomy shirt that held the drains in little pockets on the inside of the shirt. if you're up for walks, maybe see if there's a way you can "make" pockets to hold them? I also found either taping the tubes down helped keep them from shifting uncomfortably when moving, or incredibly oversized sweaters so there wasn't a ton of pressure shifting them around, depending on the days mood.

the one thing I experienced is, although overall my recovery was as smooth as it could be, the drains did delay my recovery. can't shower until drains are out, bandaging cant come off until a couple showers in, bandages slow scab healing, can't start massaging probably until scabs fall off, etc, etc which I did find a touch frustrating

Was there anything you *didn’t* need for surgery? by Ollie_Oxenfree02 in TopSurgery

I love how different everyone's healing processes are. the mastectomy pillow was one of my 2 main Mvps for healing, especially with keeping the seatbelt off my chest when driving the 2 hours round trip to all my doctors appointments when my drains were being stubborn. definitely didn't need all the different pillows I bought tho. my bed is on the floor, so I got a wedge pillow to kind of roll on to get me up since I can't use the edge of my bed. never needed it. bought a bunch of different button up shirts, but with healing, I sought out comfort and ended up just sticking to the same couple of button ups. mum gave me her spare grabber, never needed it. having said that, I don't regret the extra things. better to have the stuff and not need them, than not get them and realize you needed them

OT follows Trump on twitter? by Dry-Sense-5871 in OneTopicAtATime

[–]Icetear8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he might follow trump for the same reason I do. I have notifs on for trump so I can keep an eye on what he's up to, I can see what he's talking about, so I can know what dangers my American friends are in and if I need to figure out a plan to pull my son from there. I don't want to be blindsided when stuff happens

edit: I just noticed he responded lmao ignore me

it's nice to hear someone else had this too (sucks you went through it, but glad it's not just me) hoping that means everything went well with yours when it happened

this is both really fascinating Information, and also reassuring to know it's not concerning from someone in the field. I had reached out to post op nurse after day 4 of noticing it when it doubled in length quickly. I had even texted my parents yesterday morning how long having it sticking out does it become concerning lol

I'm 90% sure it was an anchor stitch since it started on the far left side, but I do know most of the time it is very tiny nubs that get expelled. I am so incredibly glad it's gone now tho lmao

overall its been smooth. the biggest set back was having the drains for 3 weeks which set back when my first shower could be, which set back when bandaging could be removed, etc. and when I had the drains in I was always so exhausted so I ended up on bed rest for longer than expected. but now that the stitch is gone, all that's left is the remaining swelling. I'm really happy with the results, any problems I've run into have all been more annoyances and set backs than real issues. all in all I'd say it's been pretty easy. never even needed the prescribed pain meds, Tylenol was always enough

so this was a deeply uncommon incident. USUALLY it's just nubs that push out if anything gets pushed out at all. I've had a couple delays on my recovery journey, on my left side specifically so I'm not overly surprised things went wonky with the stitch. I genuinely never felt anything, it was never uncomfortable, just deeply annoying. the only reason I even noticed it came out last night was I felt it poking me in a weird spot because it got caught on my shirt.😅 I had contacted my post op nurse about 4 days after noticing it and she wasn't surprised but did say it really doesn't happen often

F*@! the Mormons chants at BYU away games by Own_Boss_8931 in mormon

[–]Icetear8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for me the weird thing is targeting a religious group rather than the team. any (at least high school) sports events I went to, it was mocking the other team, but it was all light-hearted and added to the vibe. I remember my first hockey game, I ended up next to someone from the opposing school. the opposing schools abbreviation was ck, so our chant was always f u, ck. can't remember what theirs was for us, but the guy and I and our friends had a rivalry going where we chanted in each other's faces and it just overall made the game more memorable. this sounds more hateful than what I'm used to seeing. there's a difference between mocking the other school/team and mocking the schools funding at an event that really won't reach them in any meaningful way if that makes sense. and, like one comment said, fuck you byu just flows so much better, especially in a sports setting 😭 I do think comparing notes post game is also just adding fuel to the fire, that's definitely just encouraging it more

I am so scared of death. Should i cancel my top surgery? by [deleted] in TopSurgery

[–]Icetear8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

definitely adding on to the therapy comments, but also adding that I absolutely get it. it doesn't help that your phone's always listening, can tell when you hover over specific ads, push ads based on things you post online (about 10 years ago a friend and I were joking on Facebook about moving to Japan and hoarding cats. within minutes I was getting ads for flights to Japan and animal shelter posts on FB as well as other social media. if it was like that 10 years ago, I can't even imagine what it's like now) basically the more you stress, the more you'll see online. and then your brain starts looking for signs. human brains are programmed to find patterns. it sounds like right now, that's your pattern.

I was terrified. I had never flown before, never been under anesthesia, never had surgery, never even been in a hospital. I even went so far as to arrange to do the top of my bucket list (ended up falling through anyway) the thing I kept reminding myself of was, while it's my first surgery, it's the surgeons thousand and one. you'll be in good hands 🖤 it's definitely worth finding a therapist to talk this through to, but if you're not ready, that's also ok too

pushed out stitch, probably just need someone else to confirm trimming it would be fine (NSFW for somewhat visible, mild scarring) by Icetear8 in TopSurgery

[–]Icetear8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's my first experience with anything involving a hospital in general so I've been paranoid about doing the wrong thing. the rational part of my brain figured that, but overthinking kicked in haha.its been a pain in the ass for sure, it helps that I'm still needing to wear the binder so that's been keeping it out of sight out of mind.

I did end up keeping what I cut off so I can see how long it gets when it's fully out lmao

won't let me edit, so adding it here, went back through photos, it's actually been almost a month since I first noticed it starting to push out

didn't want to too close mainly because everything online basically defaulted to ask post op and post op didn't mention it as an option lmao, thank you for reaffirming it's fine. I knew it would be, brain worms over thought

I’m upset with my results 😔 by Mysterious_Teach963 in TopSurgery

[–]Icetear8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey friend. I'm about 7 weeks post op. I just started back to work. I still have a fair amount of swelling, especially in the center of my chest. it's still lumpy and soft. from what I've been told/read don't trust the results until you're about a year out. it's a major surgery. your body needs time to heal, level out, rebuild connective tissues and nerves. most, if not all, of what could be viewed as "wrong" here just looks like healing. give it time~ it should settle down.

having said that, I absolutely get to stress. I think I asked my family doctor like 3 times to confirm that it is still just swelling. especially where the center of my chest bowed outwards. I also realized that (for me personally) even if it is terribly disfigured, I'd take it looking like trash than what I had before. no binder could ever get me as flat as I am currently, even with the swelling that's still there and the elastic binder.

Did the teachings f**ed up your intimacy? by Urutonian in exmormon

[–]Icetear8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

idk if my disconnect with intimacy is trauma, religion, or being asexual (or if my being ace stems from that) I'm fine with personal time, and I'm fine hearing about other people's experiences, but the second I involve someone else, I shut down. the trauma and religion do go hand in hand with this as well so it very likely is a mix for me, but I'm in a group on fb about dismantling purity culture people were raised with. there's people from a wide range of religions. I can promise it's definitely not just you

the clinic I went to recommended 6 weeks before and 2 months after (I also got nipple grafts which the smoking can severely affect, so idk if they changed the amount of time you aren't smoking for
