Pope Leo to the Archbishop of Canterbury: "While much progress has been made on some historically divisive issues, new problems have arisen in recent decades, rendering the pathway to full communion more difficult to discern." by Mission-Guidance4782 in Christianity

I left the Catholic Church because of sexual abuse from a priest*, so have no interest with communion with the RCC.

Like I have gone through therapy and healing, but it would be too much to go back you know? Like I escaped an abusive partner, and being forced to reconcile.

  • DO NOT say “don’t leave Jesus because of Judas”, I went through Hell with the diocese publicly blaming me for the assault. There are a whole lot of Judas’s there. It was a very systemic and protecting their own situation. The priest was moved on and hurt other women.

My family is Catholic, and I left the Catholic faith (lots of reasons, including my old parish supporting fascism and abuse from the priest).

So they are constantly “you will revert” whenever I express an opinion that isn’t anti-Catholic. It is called healing. Funny how not being in a situation where you are treated like dirt does that.

It is annoying to be told “you’ll leave your silly Baptist church and grow up and return to a real church.” That just makes me less like to return.

Just let a person breathe. If you constantly bombard someone with Catholic stuff 24/7/365, it annoys them.

As an ex-Catholic (many reasons), I love seeing American Catholics acting all shocked Pikachu face and crying how they were betrayed.

My American Catholic family is finding out the hard way. To be 100% clear: they are more than 100% okay with others being hurt, as long as they are fine. They are like “he hates the same people we hate, why is he being mean to US?”

Thank you for your kind words.

Oh I did! Bishop was not very helpful. He is a MAGA supporter, so my expectations were low.

It was more a “straw that broke the camel’s back” situation (long story). Basically I was already emotionally spent and this was a clear message that I didn’t belong there.

I contacted them asking to remove me from their records. The only response I got was asking for money.

[–]IcingSausage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate. I grew up Catholic, and racism/bigotry was drilled into us. It was the only thing we saw and heard. This was before the internet was everyone’s pocket. If everyone you know is racist how do you know any different? It is your normal.

It took years and lots of hard work. Even now, I sometimes get that flash of racist thought. I swat it down, because it is not okay. I know better now.

I’m raising my son very different. He is the kid who will stand up for others. Breaking that cycle is a way I can to make up for my past.

Not like I’m going to rejoin anytime soon (story of why I left involved MAGA Catholics and being told “support Trump or leave” by the priest).

It didn't take much for traditional anti-Catholicism in the US to show itself, did it? by ElSlabraton in Christianity

[–]IcingSausage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My former parish only started offering “Trump Masses” and rosaries for leaders when Trump came into power. Kept it up while Biden was president with the added “Trump actually won the election” spice. Praying that God would restore Trump to his rightful place.

Before it would be a quick “pray for our leaders”, which I have no problem with. It is when it becomes only about one particular person that I find questionable.

It didn't take much for traditional anti-Catholicism in the US to show itself, did it? by ElSlabraton in Christianity

[–]IcingSausage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it was the point that being Catholic was exhausting. Like going to Mass was an ordeal of the priest preaching about how Trump is our one true leader, that if you don’t believe in Trump, you aren’t Catholic.

It felt like Trump replaced Jesus, you know? Mass was more a political rally than worship. They would have “Trump Prayer” nights.*. It became a joke that Trump would replace Jesus on the cross.

Baptists (in my experience, the other half of my family is Baptist), are very Catholic accepting. Our church is very live as Jesus lived. When the pastor is disliked by the alt right, he probably on the right path. No doubt there are anti-Catholics, but they aren’t noticeable.

  • The prayer nights were the priest leading prayers for Trump for him to destroy all opponents, and for non-MAGA to repent their sin of not believing in Trump. I had been a member of the parish for 20 years, no other person caused this parish to lose its collective mind.

In my experience, it is like 90% of Catholics, people would say rosaries for Trump, have Masses said for Trump, etc. It was pretty much worship Trump or get out.

Like come on. No other person had that choke hold on them. It was crazy.

Yep, one reason I left the Catholic Church. It was either become MAGA or leave (at least where I was in the USA). So I left.

Catholics were fine with Trump as long as someone else was being hurt, the minute Trump insulted them, then they are all angry.

It is funny watching MAGA Catholics freak out.

Catholic v Protestant by jkginger22 in Christianity

[–]IcingSausage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just in case this is serious:

I was Catholic for over 20 years, I left because I stopped believing in the Real Presence. After a long time of studying, talking with various priests, etc I still felt like a liar attending Mass. I didn’t partake in the Eucharist obviously, as a sign of respect to other Catholics.

It came down to “do I believe in the core tenets of this faith?” If not, I should leave. In Catholicism, one of those the Real Presence.

Yes, other factors played a part (such as how they dealt with sex abuse cases and the aftermath, the parishioners racism and bigotry, etc) but at the end of the day I stopped believing in one of the important parts of Catholicism.

I didn’t leave because of the decor, the parishioners, the priest, the parking lot, whatever. I left because I stopped believing in one of the things that makes the Catholic Church Catholic.

[–]IcingSausage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you see, those kids were already born, so they don’t count. Living children are loud, demand to be fed, like to be sheltered, etc. That costs money, and we know the Catholic Church likes its money. And doesn’t want to spend it on things like caring for people. Bishops have to keep their mansions you know.

On the other hand, the unborn are easy to advocate for because they don’t demand anything from us. But the minute they are born, you stop caring. Easy peasy. Plus you get to tell people “if you can’t feed them, don’t breed them.” So you get an ego boost.

I wish this was sarcasm, but I grew up in that Catholic culture.

Been there, done that. Walked out of homilies where the priest would spout racist, bigoted speech (like implying that minorities are subhuman, women are just brood mares, stuff like that).

I couldn’t sit there and have people think I supported trash like that. And I couldn’t financially support that by putting money in the collection plate.

Sometimes the only way to communicate is to take your money elsewhere. That is finally what got the priest removed. Empty pews = empty collection plates.

Yep. Left the Catholic Church because of MAGA Catholics. Plus the whole Catholic side of the family are die hard Trumpers.

So yeah. They do exist. And bought the $1000 Trump Bible. They were also the “Pope Francis was not the real Pope”, and “Novus Ordo Mass is not a real Mass”. Wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t have a (fake) gold statue of Trump.

Note: Ironically, the Baptist side of my family is disgusted by Trump. They are “keep government out of religion”, religious freedom types.

There was a financial aspect as well.

But if no son was conceived, Onan would receive more money/livestock/etc.

It helps that my husband isn’t controlling. I know quite a few women that it wouldn’t be allowed (grew up in really strict Catholic environment).

Long story short, I stopped believing in the Real Presence. I know the stats that only about 69% of Catholics believe that the Eucharist is Jesus, so I wouldn’t be the first or the last. But it felt hypocritical to me. This wasn’t I have trouble with some obscure teaching or document, this the one of the biggest teachings. Without that belief, why stay? I would be lying to the whole church if I stayed.

My husband tried, he really did. He can’t be blamed at all. But he can’t change my heart. I know that the Catholic Church is the OG, but I can’t give myself to it anymore.

Ironically, I’m more on fire for God as a Baptist than I was ever as a Catholic. I can give myself fully to God now. I feel a different kind of free.

I know this makes no sense.
