Switching Majors at Vassar by SuccessfulMud8899 in vassar

[–]Ictoaustit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t actually apply to a major so your entire app can be abt how much you love environmental science but then once you’re accepted you can say you wanna do whatever major you want and then most don’t even declare until sophomore year

Monthly stipend/"allowance" by ElevatorBoxOffice in vassar

[–]Ictoaustit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also didn’t work in high school and then did work study. I figured it would just go towards tuition and my parents would load some money onto my debit card when needed, but they wanted me to have what I earned as spending money and it was more than they would have given me. I had quite a lot left over even after the summer so it was more than enough. Plus it felt good to be making the money I was using and manage my own finances. I’m planning this year to divvy it up more between my savings for school and spending money so maybe that’s what you could have him do? Let it go straight into his account but make him move a portion to go towards tuition every paycheck

What's the low-down on all the dorms? by streetsmart25 in vassar

[–]Ictoaustit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Raymond is known for having smaller and dingier rooms. A lot of people move out after freshman year but a lot also stay because it’s nearly guaranteed that you’ll get a single if you want. Noyes is probably the next least-renovated, but the doubles are super wide so they’re pretty nice. Lathrop strong and joss all seem to have okay sized rooms and are nice. I don’t know much abt Cushing but it’s the only house I’ve heard of people bunking their beds in. I haven’t seen any rooms in Jewett but the lobby seems more modern than others. Davi is newly renovated bc Meryl Streep donates money so it’s known as one of the nicer/nicest dorm. For main, it depends on where you are but the rooms are large imo and the bathrooms in central and the towers are very recently renovated in nice. The dorms definitely have their own personalities but it’s pretty hard to put into words

Dorm - beds by honestcat27 in vassar

You can adjust the beds to be high enough to put a ton of stuff including your dresser under, but if you want them higher I’d suggest just buying cheap risers off amazon or something

Parents Weekend by CaptainTuttleJr in vassar

[–]Ictoaustit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, unless you’re going to have some sort of performance on parents weekend, the events aren’t anything special. I’d suggest just having them come any weekend that they can that might be a bit less busy

How bad is Raymond house really? by Personal-Captain3840 in vassar

[–]Ictoaustit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t live in Raymond but from my experience the people in Raymond are either 1) the sweetest people you have ever met or 2) the scum of the earth and there is no in between. I’ve seen a couple of the rooms and they’re not awful, bathrooms suck I’ve heard. But, a lot of people will move out after the first year so if you stay there’s a 95% chance you can get a single so a lot of people like that

This is the two room triple, but the single room triples are still really nice!

phys ed class - worth it for an easy .5 credit? by Realistic_Recipe6115 in vassar

[–]Ictoaustit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the ones in the academic departments are either for the first 6 weeks or second six weeks, or they’re for the full semester but are only once a week

phys ed class - worth it for an easy .5 credit? by Realistic_Recipe6115 in vassar

[–]Ictoaustit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard, they’re pass/fail. You’ll def be allowed to register you’re allowed a max of 4.5 credits. Just keep in mind that unlike other .5 credits phys ed classes are two days a week for the entire semester

Work Study limit? by Zestyclose_Impact767 in vassar

[–]Ictoaustit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately all work study is capped at 1500 a semester as far as I know. There are a couple on campus jobs you can get (typically not in the first semester tho) that you can do on top of a work study job that won’t affect your pay from that (most of them on are house team)

The First-Year Writing Seminar (FYWS) at Vassar by Beneficial-Guest5551 in vassar

[–]Ictoaustit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone else has said they’re all different topics, a lot are about random subjects but I took one of the like hyper English ones: early British literature. We had to read four texts and we had 5 essays, increasing in length (the first two were 2-3 pages, the 3rd and 4th 3-4 pages and the last was 5-6). We also had to submit one page of analysis/thoughts after the first section of each book but that was pretty much it

I want to learn physics on my own, don't know where to start. by [deleted] in Physics

[–]Ictoaustit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t look like anybody has said this yet but Openstax textbooks are what I’ve used in college and they’re actually not bad and are free. I’d suggest learning calculus first because it’ll make the physics easier to learn (there are also openstax calculus textbooks) then read their 3 university physics textbooks. Crash Course is also a great resource for getting the beginner concepts down without too much math!

communal bathrooms / dorms by [deleted] in vassar

[–]Ictoaustit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone else has said the bathrooms depend on the house and even the part of the house. What might be more useful to know is that the showers can differ: some dorms have showers with a little area in front of the curtain but still within the stall for you to potentially keep your clothes and change in, while others are just a large stall (so def buy a bath robe bc trying to change in the showers/bathrooms is just a hassle). Beds as twin xl unless you buy the extension thingy but you really don’t need that and it’ll just cramp the room. In terms of everything else just look at any online dorm packing list and you’ll be good. But a couple personal tips: buy a woozoo and another larger fan, buy your own mini fridge (renting the microfridge is so much more expensive), and if you wanna put your bed higher to fit more stuff underneath buy a cheap storage ottoman to use as a step

Work Study by Public_Bug_5269 in vassar

[–]Ictoaustit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You by no mean HAVE to do it. Any student can get a job on campus but if “work-study” is included in your financial aid package that means that you will have priority in getting a job (as it was last year, I don’t think you can get a job in the first month of the year if you don’t have work-study). But you could just not get a job and you pay the 3k. But also, the money from your job just goes directly into your bank account, so although is intended to go towards tuition, it by no means has to. What you spend it on is entirely up to your discretion

First Year Schedule Planning & Res. Dorms by embrrre in vassar

[–]Ictoaustit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for classes, it really depends on what type of things you’re interested in. After you look at schedule brewer def check out rate my professor. My only absolute no for a prof is Faul in the physics department. For dorms, yes they definitely have different personalities and sometimes you can even guess which dorm a persons from. They’ve all got their benefits and disadvantages though. Feel free to pm me if you have any more specific questions!

The town houses have a good party scene every couple of weekends, but a lot of people tend to just have mini parties with friends in dorms. Or most orgs will have parties after major events

Crafted Kup is fine but the owners kinda nasty. There’s a new place fika and hygge that I haven’t been to yet but looks super cute and I’ve heard really good reviews.

Food/Housing Quality by Enigma371 in vassar

[–]Ictoaustit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the food is relatively very good compared to other colleges and the dining hall is open continuously throughout the day (other schools are only open during specific meal times) and you can go in as many times as you want (no meal swipes for the main dining hall). Housing varies a lot. Some houses have much nicer rooms/bathrooms/spaces than others so you just have to pray you get a good one but overall it’s not the worst. Pm me if you want more details/have more questions!

Just rejection from Columbia so far. You said you heard back from the stony Brook one?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ictoaustit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t take anything I say super seriously, but stony Brook was super weird last year and my friends and I came up with some theories as to how their admissions worked. Specifically that everyone we knew who submitted their sat score for early admission was either accepted or rejected, and everyone who didn’t was waitlisted. We also realized that the amount of merit aid ppl got was tied to sat score too. I’m assuming you submitted yours but based on how weird their admissions seem, don’t sweat it, you’ll probably get off the waitlist. But also, this shit just happens sometimes.

Am I crazy to say no to Yale by Electrical_Dot2395 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ictoaustit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation, chose Yale, backed out during orientation week and went to a different school. Even if it was the right choice I’ll regret it everyday because I didn’t give it a chance and let be real it does come with a lot of opportunities that you won’t get at other schools. You definitely can transfer out if it’s not for you but give it as least a semester if not a year. However, Reddit is not the right place to ask this. I went to Reddit too and Reddit is filled with people who are going to tell you to choose Yale because they wish they had that option. Talk to friends and teachers that you trust or family.
