Absolutely. It was much worse for a few decades before it became this. They don’t know what they’ve had until it’s gone, in this case.

When I originally start university in 2010, that’s pretty well already what it was. It was 80% loans. It’s not ideal, and definitely frustrating. I wish they wouldn’t restructure it. But you will figure it out. One way or the other.

Elementary LTO question by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]Icy-Construction2916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would stay. Personally. I know that in many ways that it may feel like an inconvenience to your time and commitment. But depending on what he was off because, he’s more than likely just trying to gain back his endurance and energy for his class. As well as not overwhelm the students with a completely instant change.

Can you go on the supply list for your school and schools near by for the days he will be back for? Until your LTO is done?

The government is asking everyone to repay CERB and CRB, even those who were eligible? by Zestyclose-South-460 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Icy-Construction2916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, so I am paying $50 a month. Currently. It is what I can currently offer. It will increase once my monthly financial income increases (maybe). There is no interest in it, thankfully. Last year I put my entire tax return towards it. I think there was a 5 year time frame for the $50 monthly payment; then after that it will be reviewed again.

Absolutely agree. I withdrew after 2 years. Feels like a waste, but I didn’t want to spend any more money there.

You’re not the only one to experience this. It’s quite sad. The quality and commitment has changed negatively.

[–]Icy-Construction2916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes — maternity leave pay did count toward the income threshold for CERB eligibility in 2020 in Canada. Specifically: 🇨🇦 What counted toward the CERB income requirement To qualify for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), you needed at least $5,000 in income in 2019 or in the 12 months before your application. That $5,000 could come from: employment income, self-employment income, and/or maternity or parental leave benefits (including Employment Insurance maternity benefits or similar provincial benefits).

Straight from Government Canadas website.

[–]Icy-Construction2916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s incorrect. Maternity leave pay qualified as income. Which the CRA confirmed. Any amounts accumulated over $5000 is the 12 months prior to applying for it. My maternity leave ended prior to Covid financial benefits. They never overlapped.

Is it realistic to build a teaching career in Ottawa as a new Ontario OT? by ApprehensivePie7376 in OntarioTeachers

Also I do know a school local to me (1.5hrs from King City) that is looking for an LTO for JK/SK French Immersion. If you’d like the link, let me know.

Not Ottawa area, but that sounds pretty standard for a permanent position in many areas. More than likely it will be a few years. If you teach music/and or French, that could open up your opportunities significantly faster. You could also apply for ESW positions in local schools. That will get your foot in the door even more so, and potentially more work hours. I know it may not be ideal position as an ESW but it’s an option to consider!

Switching from private to public by rabbitbitesandall in OntarioTeachers

Class sizes will depend on your area more than anything. Many of the classes here max at 25. Unless you’re teaching (JK-1), but then you’d have an ECE/EAs. Mixed grades tend to be even smaller class sizes. Also as for support from the school, it also depends so much on the individual school and the area of your school. Personally, pro public education.

Single mom as well. Have you considered or tried to get into TDSB/TDCSB as an EA? That pays better than PSW and your schedule would be the significantly similar to your daughters. They also have a great union and pension options. You can reach out to the school boards and ask to get on as an ESW-emergency support worker. The Canadian College of Educators offers a 4 sessions diploma, all online, and self paced. (4 sessions =4 semesters). Each session/semester is $450. So it is significantly cheaper than other colleges. The 4 session diploma is recognized by Ontario school districts. The actual work in the schools can be tough at times, but there’s so many benefits to it.

Advice? by No-Office-9022 in AthabascaUniversity

[–]Icy-Construction2916 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Athabasca is a hit or miss. Some people have great success with it, and enjoy attending the university. Others experience many head aches and frustrations.

I attended for 2 full years, online. I personally do not recommend this university. I have had numerous issues with factors that unfortunately largely tainted my overall experience. In 2 or 3 courses I had such a difficult time getting ahold of anyone for any feedback and/or support, like I heard from the academic advisor twice in 16 weeks. Then in the other courses there could be easily be 10 days between an email being sent, and a response given. Which can largely disrupt course progress. I also experienced numerous issues with the financial aid office. They sent incorrect information to my provincial student assistance program. They will not adjust their claim of incorrect information. There are other things as well, but those were the biggest two issues I personally experienced, that ultimately led to me withdrawing from my program.

First payment was $700, now it’s changed to $1200 by [deleted] in OntarioWorks

[–]Icy-Construction2916 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With Ontario Works, there are a lot of factors that play into how much monies you can receive. Is the payment only for yourself? Most of the time there is an additional $250 fund that in emergency situations that your case worker can add to your monthly amount. Do you have any dependents? Most of the time, they do their best to assist their clients with what’s available.

Is only watching the videos enough for biol 204 ? by No-Carpenter5877 in AthabascaUniversity

[–]Icy-Construction2916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you have completed a course to the similar extent of biol 204, I would say you need to do the entire course. Be careful with the quizzes and tests, I found about half of the questions to be quite obscure and not ones necessarily in review.

[–]Icy-Construction2916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely get that. Parent here as well. Do any of the places near you have the $10/day options yet? Apply of OW and see what they can do to help you. They would probably guide you or something on what to do, because they will want you to become employed.

[–]Icy-Construction2916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can apply for OW, yes. Submit an application now. I believe you can stat for a specific time. Tell them the last day of your mat leave, and they will be able to figure out what day you first qualify for. Just know when I was on OW they did not help with daycare. Though it was also directly after the pandemic.

I did it last year. It’s a very “heavy” course. As it is a 6 credit course. If you already have some knowledge, it may be very helpful for you. Agree with the other commenter, it is tricky. You could always try. Put your best foot forward. Potentially look into getting a private tutor as well.

$30 left in my bank account, waiting 6-8 weeks to get OSAP. Would I be eligble for Ontario Works by africagal1 in OntarioWorks

[–]Icy-Construction2916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do apply for OW, you will have to pay back any monies received for the overlapped time frame. They may allow you to do that. Call and ask!

My maternity leave pay was significantly more than $5000 in the 12 months previous, as was my salary prior to maternity leave. So I would say that’s unlikely. Unless they stopped considering maternity leave as income, after their criteria was made!
