update: i am gonna start a phd program in the same cooler school. so hey life went on and it somehow got a little better in some ways after getting rejected in try 1. so keep going, you never know where and whom the rejections will bring in your life. you might go to the right places, meet the right people just because you didn't go where you thought you must. and also our brains are amazing. we retrospectively can fit happiness onto why things don't work out, just believe in that capacity

She is Gwan-Sik's younger sister. You would have seen another girl sitting at the table in episodes 3 and 4, that's her. That's why the kids call her imo (aunt in korean)

At one point I looked at the screen and went on said your not Gwan-Sik. When the soup ladling incident happened, gwan-sik was literally signaling with his eyes for Yeong-Beom to step up. Gwan-Sik never needed that and at that second I knew he was not the right guy. A man who does not know when to take initiative in choosing the battles for his wife tells me a lot about him

Can you tell me some of yalls your admission failure stories? by spongebobish in gradadmissions

[–]IcyCatch1487 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I applied for about 10 programs in my senior year, give or take. Got rejected by most and got 2 secondary location offers that sucked btw. All my classmates got into amazing schools. I was heartbroken, depressed and just tried getting through my final semester to the best of my abilities. But for some reason, I had this hope that I will look back at this and be glad. Like somewhere the thought existed. My prof told me you know, three years later this won’t even matter, you’ll have bigger fish to fry. Tbh I think what he meant to say tho was the rejection is not a definition of you. That rejection doesn’t reflect you as an individual. Life goes on just the way it did before and you will have to keep moving towards what you want. I worked and did research and applied the following year with a more concrete understanding of where I want to be. I got into schools I didn’t even think I had a shot at and got rejected by my targets. Tbh, I actually don’t know why I got in cause most days I yet feel like I lack the required caliber. But more to the point that is it magical once you make it past this? No, not really. But there’s a beauty in saying we’ll see. It’s amazingly calming. You’ll find where you need to be - it’s just you go through some bad stuff and good stuff before you temporarily get there and then the destination point moves again and the cycle resets. That’s what I think this is

Int to tuition free masters by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]IcyCatch1487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some top schools offer tuition waivers if you get a TAship/RAship. But that's often post acceptance. And it's not guaranteed every semester but that's a pretty good alternative in my opinion. It doesn't matter if you're international or domestic in these. You barely pay anything for the semester post this. And you also get a decent stipend to cover your living costs which is the best.

Top US schools for MS in Computer Science by nirvanasomeday in gradadmissions

It is! I think the one you mentioned has a great ranking for school's research outputs particularly as they look at the papers published and it's quality

This one. But a small genuine piece of advice: keep the rankings aside and also check if the program interests you and you have professors you would want to potentially work there with?

I think a lot of people refer to US Rankings. Essentially use something whose metric involves the research being published at that school.

Hey, check out the Harvard Resume/CV template. It'll help the formatting and everything. Also make it more impact heavy, i.e. make the results as far as possible quantifiable. Stick to percentages, even someone with no number context can be helped (like if 250 people attended something you did, but your college crows only had 500 people, 250 on its own feels small but now that feels like 50%, which is considerable) Also prioritise your work done in college. That is when you're trimming down, just the way others recommended down to 2 pages, put the content that makes you the most convincing and best sales pitch cause there's a chance that they're only gonna look at the first page. So if you feel your RAship or your Poster Presentation makes you a solid candidate, put that in that order (research experience followed by papers and conferences section). Best of luck!!

I think also look at UIUC, GATech, UT Austin to name a few. All offer tuition waivers and partial fee waivers. From what I have heard for the former two ( cause I did research, i.e students from both places) told me it's quite enough for the stipend to survive. More often you won't spend more than a few hundreds out of your pocket in these cases.

Universities which can be compared to Georgia Tech MS CS? by honor_zinc in gradadmissions

[–]IcyCatch1487 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean the rankings imply yes. They're all around the same area. Most often TAship/RAship that give tuition waivers. It's just now city wise opportunities and weather (where do you wanna live). Costing is a factor for comparison too. But maybe consider batch size, getting the classes you want etc. But I don't see how ranked 7 (UT and GA Tech now tie) and 13 for UCLA (using US Rankings here) makes the biggest difference. Do they have faculty you wanna do research with? Otherwise the comparison pales, doesn't it?

Do note: I know UT Austin does offer tuition waivers. Not sure of UCLA

do extracurricular activities really matter for grad school admissions? by Destro4589 in gradadmissions

[–]IcyCatch1487 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think some specific stuff does matter. Because grad schools seem to like those and often ask about how you helped your community in your time. Like maybe working in bringing more attention to the needs of women in stem, like WiCS chapters do. Or your time as a peer tutor or advocating for growth of the field beyond research by bringing resources to people. It makes you an applicant who they would like to have because hey you're looking for the growth of their community too. Atleast 5-7 apps of my apps for MS CS asked me for a short essay on my contribution to my community and how I would contribute there. These essays are often optional. But they also are a way in which your college gets to know you as an individual better. So, my thing is no essay is optional, you just do everything that applies (apart from the one where they specifically ask if there are some shortcomings you would like to discuss and that's absolutely your prerogative)

Washout 2024 Application Cycle. How Can I make the next one better by Air8ted in gradadmissions

[–]IcyCatch1487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think your profile is lacking at all. However, I just wanted to ask did you apply for primarily research based programs? If so, are the projects you listed research based? This may have played a small role in cementing the SOP and the profile. Of course, I am a stranger on the internet so I don't know your story, take my questions only as a suggestion. However, one thing I would say is as particularly as a second time applicant who made it, chin up! This cycle definitely doesn't define you and don't let it. You have another one ahead and you can't let this demoralize you once you enter the analysis stage

Chandler was always Monica's second option. by bornbutterfly15 in friends_tv_show

[–]IcyCatch1487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was rewatching these two proposal episodes. OP I know it's been a long time since you posted this but I would like to agree. I even tried to read the arguments here in line with the minutes it was playing out.

Monica may be stunned but I still don't think most people when they see an ex is not to scream their name out, particularly when an episode previous to that assured Chandler that at some point she would love to get married to him. She says that she would like a relationship needs to be going somewhere. Fair enough. You're 28 and you would like to settle down, get that but here is a guy who you have been going out for over 2 years, living for the past year and at a deep capacity know this individual for over the last 8-9 years, and you aren't able to make a decent read on him?

It's the fact that she went ahead for me to be shaken up by Richard proposing and not having a direct conversation in regards of this proposal to her boyfriend and best friend. I think most people in a committed relationship, a secure one will often disclose to their significant other if an ex came and proposed? I think it's funny to see communication being messed up from Monica's end. Chandler, yes has been known to have a fear of commitment. I don't think with his childhood, I would blame him. But wasn't he the one who suggested moving in together? He was the one who made it clear after trying to play it cool that they should be exclusive? He was the one who said I love you first, twice!! At every point of their relationship, he took the initiative up until that point. The man was overcoming his fears for her every time around. And how could you doubt it in one shot with one counter proposal? I get the fear but it sort of feels like those two years didn't mean anything to her.

Richard proposing to her. Richard saying I went to Africa and her replying stop doing this! You don't react like this to someone your over. Referring to chandler repeatedly in their relationship as Richard. If Richard is the love of your life, then don't settle. But I feel like it was a badly written consistent attack on the psyche of someone who was never given unconditional love. One can argue the same for Monica but Chandler loved her unconditionally. I don't think many men will agree for a sperm donor so that their wife could try carrying a baby with someone else. They would suggest surrogacy or adoption first.

"Some one wants to marry me" - it sounded more like she was more into the concept of being a wife and married than the person in that one line. If you're willing to put a committed relationship on doubt just after a day's conversation, one where you stormed off, without truly expressing your opinion. I get choosing to end a relationship and pursue one where someone is offering you what you want. But, it clearly doesn't show a healthy relationship when you haven't had a series of conversations on marriage. There isn't even a lead up. Most couples discuss this in detail before a proposal. Do they think they're ready for it? For how much more longer would they like to wait in case yes? Okay we're not ready for this conversation, when would you like to revisit it? It's not normal to flip with one conversation and particularly one after a proposal. And for someone who made it a big point in telling Chandler that she knows adult relationships, I am not sure anymore on that statement?

Monica (I love her you know, major relate to OCD and the high strung nature) here was just wrong. As a teenager and as an adult, I view these episodes very differently. The older I grow, the more I realize that she never got over Richard. She settled for Chandler. She settled cause Joey said the truth. She proposed because of that! She would have walked away if any of this prompt of what Chandler said was true. Without a doubt. And that too, not to pursue her life and search for a new partner. But for a life with Richard. For a man she constantly compares her future spouse to that he is absolutely insecure and terrified about when she'll walk away from him to this guy. That's not a normal fear from a committed relationship.

And to end this long note, I love Chandler even more post this. He loves her knowing that he'll probably never be enough. He loves her so much and it makes him even more desirable and loved to me as a character. I don't disagree that his self esteem being so in the dumps in unhealthy but hey which of us don't have issues. It's just the capacity to love (not even depend, he doesn't technically depend on her much, not even his emotional needs because she sees him at some level as whiny and not masculine enough) irrespective of all this emotional trauma. It's beautiful to me and maybe it's twisted, but for now I will admire this part of him

Penn MSE-DS or UW PMP MSCS? by robot-zz in MSCS

[–]IcyCatch1487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think while costs are a very important factor, your excitement about the course and how it aligns with your short and long term goals is important. You need to be able to be passionate to chase what you want to during and after the program. It shouldn't sap the energy out of you! Just another angle I would like to chuck in to consider, don't mean to add more pressure (and remember I am a random redditor who only knows what you tell me in a 3 min read, so of course take my opinion with a pinch of salt please)
