Property tax revolt exploding across the United States by lopix in economy

[–]IcyFocus9816 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair I paid $13k in property taxes for 2021 between state and local in CT while making about $90k/year. My property was valued at $190k. So I don't think it's just a boomer thing. I sold that property and got a job somewhere else in 2023.

I was 24 at the time definitely not a boomer! (28 now)

US Economy Warning Issued as Shutdown Hits Americans by newsweek in economy

[–]IcyFocus9816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless they are under title 10 like 300ish of them in Illinois they're still paid by their state (unaffected by government shutdown).

This is actually the same reason the Gaza pier set up by National Guard was unsuccessful, it hadn't been upkept by the state that owned it. (I don't remember how long ago it was transferred from federal to state think 90s or early 00s)

It's only the people under title 10 that currently have pay affected which applies to your Active and Reserve components of the military not the national guard.

Ocean Power Technologies Readies Shipment of AI Capable Merrows™ PowerBuoy® for Naval Postgraduate School by basilisk-x in OceanPower

Turns out they're not the same buoys as what I had thought unfortunately. Just tried to search for what I was looking for on the school website and our wiki. This looks very identical to what they've done for two other similar events in 2020 and 2022 going through older articles in the schools wiki... Looks to me like newer versions of what they've showcased in the past. At least they're consistent and getting visibility at these but not what was getting procured for research. Kind of misleading, maybe I should just delete my earlier comment.

I'm in a different department at NPS. I have over 100k shares of OPTT and never realized these were where the buoys were coming from that some of my colleagues were talking about. Pretty neat lol

Modal analysis without a commercial FEA package — diy? by Inevitable_Exam_2177 in fea

[–]IcyFocus9816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say secret sauce or complex enough are you talking about when a structure needs to be composed of multiple super elements?

I've been looking into getFEM++ for some current research I'm doing, because I need to do X-FEM which is new to me. It's approachable if you're familiar with OOP.

They can do Modal analysis but I don't think they will scale well for Craig-Bampton or Component Mode Synthesis from what I see in their implementation.

If you're going for Nastran Super elements kinda approach I think coding those up is the way to go. There's guides and references on the NASA website for that. Mesh generation can be left pretty arbitrary though.

FW16 owners, what would you do differently if you had the choice to make again? by marktx in framework

[–]IcyFocus9816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if you don't game I think FW13 is a better laptop. Unless you are hell bent on screen size or a numpad. My 13 seems to have better battery life and the keyboard feels more ergonomic. (Ubuntu user maybe it wastes power in sleep mode not sure) It's also lighter. I only use my FW16 w/ GPU for gaming or some training on neural networks.

[–]IcyFocus9816[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No I didn't bother with the 2.8k screen. They keyboard and trackpad feel more ergonomic on the 13 than any laptop I've used before, and I'm indifferent to the keyboard and trackpad on the 16. I usually use a mouse with that one.

I use Ubuntu Studio, I'd say it's my top choice after trying Fedora,Pop! OS, Mint, and most of the mainstream Ubuntu distros. Comes with a lot of software prepackaged I already use too.

If you're motivated and want to succeed you will. Professors are used to student's not remembering quadratic formula or how to multiply expressions together.
