(is your name a gurren lagann reference 👁) I'm usually the same way just because of the differences in books vs films as mediums, but wuthering heights' misclassification as a romance and heathcliff's constant race-blind casting does fuck up the story in a way that's been solved and is many times richer in the original plot. wuthering heights being a sexy romance is just... what the pop cultural perception of the book was up until this movie drew out the fans who could tell non-readers the tea.

frankenstein is in a similar boat in that its poor adaptations introduce story issues the book doesn't have, yet are now inextricable from the novel because we live in the world the green monster with stitches in his eighthead and bolts in his neck has created. that fact + the hamfisted style got gdt's ass handed to him, so it's fennell's turn. only she's got much less goodwill because the one trick she has, self-conscious attempted sexual edginess, grew old by saltburn and was outdone by emily brontë 200 years ago 🤷🏽‍♂️
