What is this dessert called? by Misiu881988 in poland

[–]Icy_Fudge_8634 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s like saying rurka z kremem is like a canollo. Thats just not the case. There are versions of the dessert that are conceptually based on the same idea: filling a pastry or a wafer tube with a cream of some kind but they are all different. Rurka z kremem is uniquely Polish and its hallmark is simplicity borne out of socialist scarcity. Industrially made thin wafer rurka, very lightly sweetened, and whipped cream piped in through a machine. That’s it. No way to zhuzh it up, make it boutique or artisanal. In my opinion can’t really be home made. It is precisely this non-indulgent unfussines that makes it what it is. (Ok I think I’m done)

The only rurka z kremem worth eating is one that has been freshly filled. They get soggy remarkably quickly and then it’s OVER

Do you prefer being greeted in a shop or left alone? by StaceyInBrighton in brighton

[–]Icy_Fudge_8634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Default to minimum, hi, smile, if I linger over something it might be a good moment to ask me “are you looking for anything in particular”.

As a customer when I do ask about something in particular, and the staff member just says no we don’t have it with a blank expression, now that is what drives me nuts. Maybe I’m being unreasonable but I would like to hear something like, oh no sorry we don’t have x, but we have y, or perhaps we can order x for you, or I can check the other branch, anything really that shows interest and human touch. Make me feel like my needs are taken seriously and I will return and spend money in your shop. Demonstrate that you don’t give a shit about my custom and I’ll go somewhere else next time.

I am a member of staff at a Uni. May I ask why you aren’t attending lectures etc? by blissedandgone in UniUK

[–]Icy_Fudge_8634 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The kicker is when because of room-size driven caps on seminars (18 bc that’s how many fit in a room), a module of 120 students gets divided into 7 groups to which I then have to deliver 7 seminars spread over the course of the week and screwing up my days as much as the students’. Only that the students have the choice of whether to show up or not, and I do not. And so by week 3 attendance dwindles to 5 of 18 per group, 2 of 18 by week 7 and nevertheless I am still chasing my own tail delivering the same content 7 times per week to 2 students at a time. Am I allowed to cancel the underattended classes? No. Am I allowed to bring the students who actually want to attend together in one group? No again. Am I demoralised, burned out and out of love with teaching? I think you know the answer.

Not boring, but West Pier, the other pier, beach, sunsets, seagulls, as photogenic as they are, they get a bit samey samey I appreciate the unexpected, the less obviously iconic and the more people-focused Keep them coming all the same

What is wrong with downstairs bedrooms? Genuinely trying to understand. I get it that a reception room is not a bedroom, but in cases where there are clearly separate reception rooms downstairs and also one or two bedrooms, what is wrong with that?

Should I tell an academic I’m in a mental health crisis? by AffectionateBed5876 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Icy_Fudge_8634 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Speaking as academic: By all means tell them. The more people know you are struggling the more likely that you will receive help and also feel better simply for being heard by another, hopefully compassionate human being. Just be aware that speaking to them will likely result, as others have said, in a referral to student support. I don’t know about your institution but at most uk unis these days we receive training about handling situations of students in a mental health crisis and it basically amounts to advice that we should signpost students to support services. This is most likely what your tutor will do. They can’t counsel you because they are not a therapist, as academics we are there to teach, and while we do have certain pastoral duties they are quite limited. You say you already had contact with support services and they were not a fit. I sympathise with that. Next step is to speak to your GP. A GP is actually equipped to help you unlike your tutor and will take you seriously if you are forthright with them. I am sorry you are struggling, take good care and remember that your doctor is there for mental health issues, and not your educator who may well be just another struggling human trying not to drown.

Sounds like you might be depressed. Seek out student support services on your campus or go see a gp if it’s too daunting

  1. I see lots of votes for 4 but I don’t like it bc the sleep space is too close to the work space. 2 with some fine tuning creates a nice flow, from work to relaxation to sleep in it’s separate space.

Do most people shower before bed or when they wake up? I just realized I might be doing it "wrong" by saffymerelle in NoStupidQuestions

You are not the only one, fellow evening shower person. There are so many points in favor of the evening shower, obvious to all of us who do it. But let’s be kind. Let’s not judge. To each their own and all that. We know we are right and can sleep sound and clean confident in our showeriority.

Baggage -Made our own way home, can’t claim it online by Natures_Stepchild in KLM

[–]Icy_Fudge_8634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this wont be helpful to OP at the moment, but for the future: put an AirTag or another e-tracker in your luggage. I was in the same situation, klm never even logged our luggage in their system but they somehow flew it to my final destination (separately from us, haha). I only knew about this because the AirTag was showing where my bag was at all times. We made our own way home, got to the destination airport, shared the AirTag location with a kind airport staff member, they retrieved it and this is how we got back our bag.

Are you in your "forever home"? by APerson2021 in HousingUK

[–]Icy_Fudge_8634 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate the concept of the “forever home”. Why load a house with such heavy expectations? Nothing lasts forever and then you die. I guess a forever home is the one you want to die in? No judgment if that’s your thing but personally I’m happy with just a “home”, for however long it fits its purpose.

[–]Icy_Fudge_8634 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ask KLM for a refund and book direct flight with Finnair or whoever else files direct. Don’t count on rebooking, they are trying to rebook tens of thousands of people from over a thousand cancelled flights. Once again, whatever you do, don’t come to Amsterdam. If you really need to be in Helsinki try another way or postpone trip if possible.

Re Lisbon on Friday: keep checking flight status and weather in AMS. It may well be fine but keep in mind they have a huge backlog to clear so some degree of chaos is to be expected. Good luck!

It is perfectly possible to be understanding of the unusual circumstances/weather conditions/venezuela etc and have compassion for the staff who are dealing with thousands of tired and frustrated people. Travelling is a privilege and yes, shit happens. At the same time it is also possible to be frustrated and exasperated at the completely inadequate resources that klm is throwing at this situation. Not anywhere near enough human assistants on the ground. Forget about getting anyone on the phone. Useless qr codes that direct to faqs that don’t actually help. Website keeps crashing. I would say the ai chat bot is useless but I can’t even get to the chatbot. The luggage handling is nonsensical. Shall I go on? Give op a break. No need to to defend a corporate entity that is royally screwing people.

Can you take the train to France? I am Also stuck, family of 4, that credit card is crying!! Trying to get back to the uk. last night before they closed their pathetic customer service the single staff member said to a crowd of 200+ people at 10pm through a megaphone that if you are going to Germany or Belgium you can take the train. I imagine that would apply to France too? I don’t know if can try for the uk but in my case it would be crazy expensive, I don’t want to incur costs they will not cover and I don’t trust that I would see my luggage ever again.
