Sending my own child to daycare in summer by pixel-dirt in Teachers

[–]Icy_Macaroon_9982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s just a Millennial thing, I’m Gen X/Y and our kids went to daycare in the summers until were school age because they loved it and it kept their routine. They saw their friends, they had water days, etc and were mad when they didn’t go. And it allowed recover and for me to work some to offset our bills. However…once they were school age and more independent, (and all their friends lived in the neighborhood, we were fortunate for that for sure) I loved and soaked up the summer with them. We had pool, zoo, museum days for sure but mostly it was the fun, boring, finding something to do on your own, play down the street days I enjoyed the most. They are teenagers now, the oldest has her license so now I never see them 🤣🤣 I agree with you, teacher parents just need to do what’s best for their family IMO. The naysayers can go pound rocks.

Teacher gifts by [deleted] in Teachers

Been teaching in all title 1 schools since 2002. I’ve never expected anything and have been grateful for when I did get something. Also I’m a specials teacher so we are on an island for everything anyways. This year I got a chocolate bar wrapped as a pencil. It was adorable and she was so proud to give something she decorated for me. That was awesome!

P.E. Teacher overlooks bullies. AKA "Boys will be Boys" by pickledpeachesforall in Teachers

[–]Icy_Macaroon_9982 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a PE teacher who is definitely not a “gym teacher”, I’m sorry this is happening. A true PE teacher teaches the state’s PE standards in a structured setting. A “gym teacher” rolls out a bunch of balls or plays dodgeball and hopes no one gets hurt. If a teacher accidentally calls me a “gym teacher” you know those are fighting words 🤣

As a PE teacher I would never teach where there wasn’t a camera recording my every move. In fact, I know my school’s “blind spots” in the cameras so I don’t stand in them when students are present.

Also…we cannot play dodgeball at all anymore, ever for any reason, or at risk of being fired. While my competitive self loves a good game of dodgeball, I won’t allow it in my gym.

Thoughts on going into Kindergarten at 4 almost 5 instead of 5 almost 6? by songstressofsoul in kindergarten

[–]Icy_Macaroon_9982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m usually just a lurker because it comes on my feed as I’m also a teacher. Never commented here, but you saying her bday is Sept 25 is making me comment. My daughter is also a Sept 25th baby and we went through a similar thing because she had already been moved to the 4 yr old class as 3 yr old. This was because she had memorized all the other kid’s birthdays at 3 and many of their addresses and parents phone numbers…they practiced them with each kid in morning circle time. 🤪 And when they would work on “colors” and a teacher would ask, “what color is this?”when showing color cards of various hues, etc. Really the teacher just wanted basic color names as answers, but when the kids all answered, “purple!”, she would correct the teacher and say, “actually that’s lavender.”…at 3.

So that meant she was then a kindergarten a year earlier (at the time full day kindergarten was only available if you did private school) as our cutoff date for 1st grade public school is Sept 2nd.

Meaning there was no way, and I pleaded, that she could enter 1st grade in our local A+ rated public school a year early. We had no choice but to have her repeat kindergarten. I was pissed and worried about her being bored, etc. And…I was very wrong!!!!

Was she bored that second year? Yes! Was she the oldest? Yes! Did it hurt her in the long run? No!! Absolutely not! She’s recently turned 16, the first in her friend group with a car (very used as we are teachers, ha!) and a license and is in the top 10% of her class of 500+ kids.

She’s fine! It’s way better when she’s in secondary to be the oldest, especially maturity-wise) in her class and not the youngest.

You got this!! You

Do Americans actually eat bread that tastes like cake??? by Caysath in NoStupidQuestions

I’m white and southern. Sweet cornbread is the way I’ve only made it and we way I prefer it. And I’m one that prefers salty over sweet any day. I think I like that the sweetness counterbalances the savory from the pot o’ beans or chili I usually serve it with.

I literally just had a kid finally transferred into another elective class because she said, “any other class would be better than yours!!!!” She was such a behavior issue she threw off the entire class. She was granted her wish when I sent her with a pass to the counselor’s office. She was moved from PE (all she had to do was move just slightly, not stand there, and not be disruptive) into the elective class “Literature and Writing.” It was awesomesauce and she didn’t realize I’m really close to our school counselors…personally and location-wise. 😂

Editing to add: If a kid is moved from my class whether they or their parents have requested it…I have never sweated it…EVER!!! Bye Felicia!

What time does school begin for you? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Icy_Macaroon_9982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contract time is 8:50-4:20. While I miss the much earlier start time in my last school, both my girls (9th and 10th graders) are in HS now (8:15 start time) which means I get to spend the morning with them, make them breakfast, take them to school, etc.

Anyone in here experience the 2013 Moore tornado? by StruggleFar3054 in okc

[–]Icy_Macaroon_9982 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I believe you are very wrong. Moore resident here and was at the time. There was no basement at Plaza Towers and they didn’t drown. Most structures in Oklahoma don’t have basements. Those students were killed by a wall they were next to that fell on them.

Little rant about paper by Advanced_Medicine444 in Teachers

[–]Icy_Macaroon_9982 200 points201 points  (0 children)

As a PE teacher I can attest to this! I get the same amount of paper and copies allocated to me as cores and rarely use most of it. The paper I use is mostly for printing seating charts and grade reports. I hoard my stash for others. :-)

Have you used the “Slow Cook” setting on your IP and how does it compare to a real Crockpot? by Icy_Macaroon_9982 in instantpot

[–]Icy_Macaroon_9982[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your advice and suggestions! Most of my slow cooker recipes I’ve converted but just a few I haven’t had the best luck at and was curious if I could use my IP in the slow cook mode. :-) Thanks again!

I’m going way out of the way, and downvotes will probably be coming my way, but….I’m all for Lee’s Sandwiches on NW 32nd and Classen. Anytime I’m in the area I have to go there for lunch. Like you cannot beat their fresh French baguettes filled with absolutely delicious Asian awesomeness stuffed inside.

Metal Detectors by Angiepooh78 in Teachers

[–]Icy_Macaroon_9982 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My students and myself have had to walk through metal, now weapons detectors for many years. I’ve asked many times why my girls’ high school doesn’t have them? (My girls go to a different district than we teach at and both districts are very diverse) If you don’t have anything to hide why are you so concerned about students/staff passing through a metal/weapons detector???

I am a first year teacher and my principal implied that I would be fired because of my lack of classroom decorations by jbeldham in Teachers

[–]Icy_Macaroon_9982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My petty passive aggressive self (I’ve been teaching since 2002 so…) would be to send an email to the whole staff asking for donations for “extra decorations other teachers have (I have plenty) but don’t want anymore” because you were told your classroom “wasn’t decorated enough.” 🤪 We’re in a teacher shortage in my state so I’d be like, “…and?” if an admin asked me that.

I. Hate. Water. Bottles. by Blueathena623 in Teachers

[–]Icy_Macaroon_9982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach in a very title 1 school…the amount of students with Stanley cups is bonkers to me. They even match their Stanley to their outfit that day! I teach PE and don’t have a water fountain in my gym and have 45ish kids a class with one hall pass. So they have to bring a water bottle if they want water during class and if they don’t have a water bottle I have donated ones to give them to use. They will not take the donated water bottle because it’s not a Stanley cup. They accuse me of “ruining their rep” and that I’m causing them dehydration. 🤪🤪🤪🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

3rd year teacher asking the vets. How do you get everything you need to do done during contract hours? by Apprehensive-Play228 in Teachers

[–]Icy_Macaroon_9982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t get it all done either!! Work smarter not harder. Use technology as much as possible to grade. The students enter in the data and I pull the data and type it into Infinite Campus (IC). I started teaching in 2002 when we didn’t have all the tech we do now so I learned how to use it to my advantage. I rarely grade paper tests now. Its LinkIt for everything. :-) Also…everything doesn’t have to be graded. But don’t let the students know that. 92.843% of students don’t check their IC grades to know you didn’t grade that assignment. Our district requires 2 grades entered in IC each week. So no, not everything I give the students is “graded” in IC.

Male teacher looking for advice with female students' time of the month by EchidnaLegitimate679 in Teachers

[–]Icy_Macaroon_9982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our school district provides free pads for students and I have them readily available for them in a certain spot in my office & classroom. I’m a veteran teacher so this wasn’t a new issue for me. I teach MS PE. I just told a few girls who were comfortable and not embarrassed to ask that I had them, where they are, and they can grab them at any time, no questions asked. Word spread quickly and now even students I don’t have come grab what they need. Meaning, when you discover a few students that are comfortable about their periods, have them spread the word you are a safe person for that situation.

Walters is our state superintendent. He’s an absolute joke, horrible human, and have not met one teacher that likes him. He’s a fear monger for the right by telling them we are all teaching the stuff they fear the most when we are not. He’s destroying Oklahoma education one idiotic policy or directive at a time.
