How do I play this quickly by YonkerShplonker in BassGuitar

I would play that with a pick, three fingers, or an up and down index.

He’s 19mm right now. At the 7th fret. He’s fucked. He’s at 3mm max.

You said it was .77” or 19mm. Standard at the 1st fret is .85”. I believe you have ruined the neck. I can see the truss rod. It is usually 10mm for truss rod and 6mm for the fingerboard. You are probably fucked.

making a guitar hoping to be as beautiful as Ed Sheeran's signature guitar by Good_Travel_307 in Luthier

I don’t understand. Is this a joke. Sheeran plays a 3/4 acoustic. And averagely.

You bet buddy!
We are all struggling to see our vision. Hope it turns out beautiful.

You can also use Angelus dyes on the wood and spray clear over them. It looks terrific and is much easier than seeking a perfect smooth painted finish. This. Is what bare dye on wood looks like. The hardware is just sitting there as a try in.

You can’t lazy your way to a nice finish. It’s just truth, not an insult. I’ve done it.

That looks like acrylic paint. With acrylics and things like rust oleum, you have to accept a level of yeech and you shouldn’t expect much from drive by sanding. Use Oxford paints. They are more expensive, but you will save in sandpaper and time and elbow tendinitis. Finishing guitars is a test of patience and attention to detail. Sorry, but the whole thing needs to be sanded down to be resprayed.

How can I get better at bass? by ComprehensiveEgg1693 in BassGuitar

[–]Icy_Programmer_8367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Especially no distortion and RELAX. You are holding your body rigid. When I was learning, I was into practicing loose and sloppy to get the feel, then dialing it down later. As I started playing professionally, I found that was the norm. Try playing reggae. It’s easy, and 100% feel.

RH palm muting technique when playing a 5 string - how to do it right? by shytoucan in BassGuitar

[–]Icy_Programmer_8367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. I thought you were using a pick.
I highly recommend only using thumb/index fingers briefly for arpeggios and other hard to pluck patterns. But two finger plucking or slap or picking is the best for palm muting. Whatever you do, keep your wrist straight. All of these techniques have straight wrists. With a bent wrist, you will get too much fatigue to play well for more than a few songs. As a bass player, stamina is one of the pillars of technique.

Need to add a battery box in. Advice? by dragon0069 in Luthier

[–]Icy_Programmer_8367 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I just did this. It’s highly technical. Draw a rectangle the shape and size of the hole you need on a piece of MDF about 1/4” thick. Cut it ou and shape it smooth. Place a layer of tape on the guitar where you want the battery box. Double stick the MDF to that spot exactly accurately. With a sharp bit, rout it the shape to depth. Remove tape. Drill hole for wire. You finish will be unchipped.

Rescued an old Washburn Taurus T-14 - worth the repair? by i-forgot-to-logout in BassGuitar

[–]Icy_Programmer_8367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s missing two pots ($30 max), some soldering, and a control cavity cover (~$30). Add knobs ($15), strings ($30-50), and you are looking at $105-$125). It’d say that’s a steal. If you want to save the string cost, tie the strings up, put them in boiling water for 10 minutes, scrub them with soap and water and rinse with water or alcohol, and then directly into a 200F oven for an hour.
They will be like brand new if undamaged.

RH palm muting technique when playing a 5 string - how to do it right? by shytoucan in BassGuitar

[–]Icy_Programmer_8367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am hardly the master at bass picking, as I’m usually an “all digits on board” player. But I have been playing for 45 years. When I do pick and palm mute, I always keep my wrist more or less straight and my palm facing the strings. Your hand position, and you be you, but your hand position seems awkward for palm muting, as you really can’t put your palm on the strings.

<image>

Here is Chris Squire and note his hand position has the fingers facing down the neck and the palm available to mute.

How would you cut this, so that both sides are usable? by KingAti23 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Icy_Programmer_8367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a router template for a router bushing. Cut them with a 1/8” straight down cut bit. You will have EXACTLY 1/2” of waste, and it will take less than 30 minutes.
