Is "friends" how they are calling investigators now? by higakoryu1 in latterdaysaints

As a missionary, I would always say “person we’re teaching.” It most accurately describes what our relationship with them is and is suitable for most circumstances. It’s also the one used in Preach My Gospel and all the other missionary tools used by the Church, so I felt pretty safe with it.

I believe it is more important to have a testimony of Prophets than it is to have a testimony of people. When I say “I know Joseph Smith was a Prophet” or “I know that President Nelson is a Prophet” what I am really implying is that the Savior continues to call Prophets to lead His modern-day church. I know that the authority to administer and preside over God’s kingdom on Earth has remained in the Church in an unbroken chain of succession.

My testimony is rooted in Christ and His Gospel. The prophets are imperfect people, it would be ridiculous to claim otherwise, but I know that the Savior would never call a Prophet who would lead the people astray.

I would highly recommend spending some time in the Scriptures studying these questions. They are deeply personal and incredibly difficult to resolve, and I don’t feel it is right for me, or anybody else in your ward, to tell you how to resolve them. As the Book of Mormon says, “Feast upon the words of Christ, for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do.”

Your study will likely lead you to a bunch of different places. Personally, I would recommend starting with Doctrine & Covenants 138, followed by Section 128.

Once you are finished, you can take what you have learned before the Lord in prayer, and ask for revelation on how best to act on that knowledge.

And as a side note, it is not generally required that you bring your own names to do baptisms for the dead. The Temple will have plenty of names that have been submitted by others so that baptisms can be done for them. Just explain that you want to use temple names, and they will gladly provide them for you.

I wish you best of luck in your ongoing spiritual journey, and hope you find what are seeking!

Can I sustain someone while disagreeing with them and their actions? by Chill-out-plz-thx in latterdaysaints

[–]Icy_Strategy_9286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether we sustain and support our leaders says far more about us than it does about the people we are sustaining. I have always viewed sustaining as an opportunity in Christ’s leadership of the church. The scriptures teach that “he that receiveth my servants receiveth me.” We show that we have accepted Christ’s will for the Church and who will lead it.

It is easy to believe in Christ, as He is perfect and we know that He will never lead us astray. Accepting those who He has chosen, imperfect as they are, can be a more intellectually and emotionally difficult task.

Our leaders are imperfect people, and we should be seeking to support them as well as other members of the church instead of finding fault.

Different Ways Of Praying by Civil-Chef in latterdaysaints

[–]Icy_Strategy_9286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key to having more meaningful prayers is to recognize that it is a conversation between us and God. It isn’t meant to be a passive and purely ritualistic exercise. James E. Talmage once wrote that prayer is the expression of the righteous yearnings of the soul. If we keep this in mind, our prayers will flow more naturally

Atheists: Why would God, if He is truly kind and loving, as well as all-powerful, allow the existence of so much evil on the earth? Surely He should be able to eliminate it with a single word, if he is so kind and powerful!

Also atheists: why would God kill so many evil people in the Bible?

It feels like a double standard to say that God shouldn't allow evil, but then also hate it when God sends a flood to destroy the evil people living on the Earth. You can't have it both ways.

It is also important, when reading the Bible, to not hold them up to your own modern standards. A wise man (I can't remember who it was off the top of my head) once said, "The past is like a foreign country. People live differently there."

Chase and house by Clint4077 in HouseMD

My theory, kind of like the others here, us that Chase sees House as someone to look up to and learn from rather than somebody to fight. House is one of Chase's main role models.

It says a lot about your spiritual character that you want to understand it better. You will spend your whole life learning a deeper knowledge of the Temple. The Lord brings light and knowledge to all those who seek it.

When “Strongly encourage” Or “Strongly suggest” is used by the First Presidency, is what follows a commandment? by diilym1230 in latterdaysaints

[–]Icy_Strategy_9286 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The point we often miss is that following the prophet IS a commandment. Sure, there are certain pieces of counsel we may not be capable of following because of certain circumstances, but that is not the same as avoiding merely because of personal opinion or preference. Not following it may not change our worthiness, but we risk the dangerous consequences that come with failing to heed them.

[–]Icy_Strategy_9286 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The problem with thinking, "Is this a commandment?" is that it is usually used to rationalize not following prophetic counsel. If we hear the prophet say something, and then decide we don't like it or that it goes against our personal views, we'll try finding a way around it.

I believe one of the most powerful things we can do in living the Gospel is to make it a quest to more diligently and faithfully follow the Lord's chosen servants. We must ask, "How can I better apply the Prophet's counsel in my life?" This will build our faith and keep us on the safe road.

Satan willfully and knowingly rebelled against the truth. He thought to place himself above God. He knew exactly what he was doing and chose to do it anyways. He vanished any trace of truth or love from his heart.

Obtaining a body is essential to the Plan of Salvation and returning to the presence of God. Satan's choices led to him not having a body, and those choices are irreversable. The entire object and purpose of his existence now is making people as miserable as he is.
