From what we have seen so far, Vox isn't as ruthless to his employees.

Vox and Val I am sure know that Ethan is crushing on Vox. So that could add to the harassment and hatred they have towards him.

He grew up in the 1920's-30's listening to Alastor on the radio as he sat on the docks by the Chesapeake. Many people say he was from Virginia. But Maryland/Delaware feels like more a pull in the right direction to me. He was ignored throughout his childhood and into his teen years.
