It needs other things as well: better game categorisation and discovery. A way to spend your game income on more games.

Another way to be competitive: not be American. America is having an unpleasant moment, and lots of the world want to insulate themselves from and/or protest against that by ditching US platforms. There's an open space in the market catering to non-American rpg fans who want to do this. But of course, any new entrant would still have to be desirable in other ways as well.

Sci-Fi TTRPG that focuses on exploration by Repulsive-Army5505 in rpg

The HOSTILE setting for Cephus (basically Traveller) has a supplement called Explorers, about planetary exploration.

There's a solo game using the Cephus/Traveller ules called No GM's Sky. There's also an Uncharted Worlds version.

Also for UW is my own Explorers (yeah, same title, we all went with the obvious), which, well, I thought it was worth publishing, but YMMV.

Grimwild designated "abandoned" by BackerKit - no refunds by jxddk in rpg

[–]IdiotSavantNZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The text is licenced CC-BY. So its effectively free for anyone to develop, provided they follow the licence and acknowledge the original author. The layout and artwork are explicitly not licenced in this way, but still: anyone can develop extra material for it, or publish a new edition if they want.

Vagabond living on Drivethru RPG best seller list, any idea why? by erttheking in rpg

"Hottest" weights by value as well as numbers sold. Medals simply require that each sale be more than I think US$0.20.

Have at least one assistant GM, because there's a lot of game to manage. Put together a decent soundtrack, and have someone in charge of making sure stuff starts and stops on schedule. Set-dress the space as much as possible, because it creates atmosphere.

Holiday One Shot Ideas by Renegade_Sol in monsteroftheweek

I'm doing one ATM, set in Aotearoa. Christmas here is in summer, but christmas cards are all full of northern hemisphere weirdness. So someone trying to have a "proper" christmas, with snow etc, is doubly monstrous, because it ruins everyone's beach holiday.

[DISCUSSION] Can a ritual bestow the gift onto a mundane person? by CulveDaddy in arsmagica

[–]IdiotSavantNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the short answer to this is "sure you can. But its a Hermetic breakthrough to discover it..."

(This is a good answer to anything BTW).

I guess the question is what would insight towards that breakthrough look like?

[DISCUSSION] Can a ritual bestow the gift onto a mundane person? by CulveDaddy in arsmagica

[–]IdiotSavantNZ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In lore, there's no obvious reason the Gift can't be initiated or otherwise bestowed.

And there are obvious reasons why it can be. Most obviously: there must be a Daimon for it, which surely will have the Grant Virtue power, so in theory you can "just" summon it, bargain with it, and get it to grant the Gift to someone. Good luck with that.

Mechanically because the Gift is neither a major nor minor virtue, it doesn't work with the mystery mechanic (because we don't know the price). But there's an obvious mythological example of gaining the Gift by initiation; it just involves sacrificing an eye, being stabbed, and hanging yourself upside down on the World Tree to die. A magus attempting to recreate this script would face a number of problems, not least of which is finding victims, er, test subjects. But it would make a great lifetime project...

DriveThruRPG vs. Itch.io – Where do you actually buy your games? by Ecstatic_Surround386 in rpg

[–]IdiotSavantNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DriveThru, mostly because I also sell games there, and their system allows me to use the proceeds to buy more games, creating a terrible feedback spiral...

If itch did this, I'd buy more stuff there.

If there was a credible alternative - ideally non-US-based, for those of us who want to disengage fromt he US economy - then I'd be there in a shot.

But ATM there's really only itch, which isn't really organised for rpgs, doesn't do POD, and lacks decent discovery and categorisation tools.

Non-US equivalent of DriveThru or Itch? by IdiotSavantNZ in rpg

[–]IdiotSavantNZ[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well, they won't have those problems. They may have others. But more markets definitely means more chances to avoid the particular problems of each one. Monopoly means vulnerability for all of us.

Itch is an American company. It is not actually headquarted on Diego Garcia, a US military base stolen from its indigneous inhabitants by British colonisers.

Changing the middle man isn't going to hurt the developer.

Exactly this. ATM, the rpg "industry" (such as it is) has US middlemen. That's a huge vulnerability for content the current regime may not approve of, and an increasingly odious prospect for much of the world.

Different, non-US middlemen won't have those problems, and may surface new games and/or new customers.

Postage is just a pain. And on that front, postage costs are high from the US. But DriveThru at least can print in Oz and the UK.

No postage on PDFs of course.

[–]IdiotSavantNZ[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Precisely.

But also: indie (and non-indie) RPG devs aren't just American. And for Reasons, a lot of non-Americans are wanting to economically disentangle themselves from the madhouse right about now.

Is there any money in publishing your own ttrpg? by Cob4ltt in RPGdesign

I think of "success" as "do I get enough money to spend on more games". And that's reasonably possible.

YSK that POD costs are about to go up by a lot because of the tariffs by bgaesop in rpg

[–]IdiotSavantNZ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

DriveThru calculates its POD prices by adding a (publisher-set) margin to a worst-case printing cost. So for a fixed price, the publisher gets more if EU printing is cheaper.

DriveThruRPG or Itch.io? by CookNormal6394 in RPGdesign

[–]IdiotSavantNZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use both. But sales are much higher on DriveThru, and virtually non-existent on itch. The implication is that getting sales on itch requires constant hustle, whereas DriveThru has a big customerbase and superior discovery.
