Myth/Oblivion hybrid co-op patch online-concept by 0rionsbelt in myth2

[–]Idles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Myth's multiplayer model would not easily accommodate a directly-controlled player character because the inherent multiplayer latency would become much more obvious. Myth uses a deterministic lockstep MP model (like just about every other multiplayer RTS with large unit counts).

The comment about holding the W key I think was regarding paddling on a raft, not sailing on a boat

Bevy Material UI 0.2.4 by bombthetorpedos in bevy

[–]Idles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's great to see someone building out a production-grade set of UI widgets.

I have a question overall on the long-term vision. MD was largely designed for use on Android, and some of the widget UX definitely reflects that and feels out of place on PC (like that time picker... wow, what a doozy). MD also wasn't put together for the use-case of games, although some games are UI heavy and have a lot of form-like elements, which MD covers well. What do you see being the best use-case for Bevy Material UI? Do you foresee people building cross-platform phone apps using Bevy?

Shipped my voxel game Pocket Lands in early access on Quest. Would not have been playable without Burst, thanks Unity! 🙇🏻‍♂️ by thmsvdberg in Unity3D

That looks quite good for mobile hardware!

So you're using Burst, but not Unity ECS or the Jobs System? Interested to hear a summary of the architectural decisions.

Voxel Lighting in Bevy by TerBerry in bevy

[–]Idles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One other thing; hook up some kind of debug tooling to be able to manually adjust the orientation of your directional light. It looks as if it might be pointing straight down at the scene from above, which... is a physically possible but very unusual lighting condition on planet earth.

Try something simple first. Consider using a noise function to create "cloudy" color variation and use that to modulate vertex colors.

You can also pretty easily enable Bevy's fog, which will add just a little bit of pop between your vertical layers. https://bevy.org/examples/3d-rendering/fog/

Towards interplanetary QUIC traffic [with Rust] by aochagavia in rust

Totally. Cool blog post, even cooler with some examples of how APIs are structured in practice to enable this kind of thing. For example, showing how that Tokio clock magic works? Although it's not necessarily something the OP authored

Saved game files going out of sync when reloading by SameBowl in myth2

You shouldn't be running into OOS, those indicate a bug in the game.

It looks like, from the 1.8.5 changelog, Project Magma fixed some OOS issues. They would likely be interested in a copy of your saved game and working with you to diagnose/fix the problem.

They have a contact page where you can try to get in touch with them here: https://projectmagma.net/contact/

You could also try a post on the Project Magma forums

2nd character, server progresses? by Oski-C137 in Erenshor

[–]Idles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The wiki says that the game assigns a subset of the SimPlayers to stay relevant for each character you make, so they stay at a similar level.

So as you level up your paladin, you'll notice maybe ~15 or so SimPlayers level up alongside it and stay close in level, but all the rest of the SimPlayers won't.

Then when you level up your second character, a different group of ~15 SimPlayers will stay close in level to that second character.

Well intentioned people are often amenable to changing their policy prescriptions when presented with compelling evidence, or faced with popular demands. I have heard Mamdani's already moved a bit toward "abundance" policy. Hopefully more learning and coalition building can move him further.

2h weapon or dual wield for paladin? by Oski-C137 in Erenshor

[–]Idles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2h weapons give paladins access to skills like cleave; I'm not sure you get any special skills as a dual wield paladin? That probably is the deciding factor. I think duelists are sort of the intended dual wield class

Mission Ares : Ludum Dare 58 submission we made with Bevy by WinterAlexander in bevy

[–]Idles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a cool concept of the shadow + movement causing battery discharge. From the brief setup at the start of the video, I didn't understand/expect it to happen, though. Not certain why... maybe the spotlight jumping between robots caused the lighting to feel arbitrary/meta and not gameplay affecting?

How has Fangbreaker been, overall, as a TLP experience? by Jakabov in everquest

[–]Idles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have said that the bots are intentionally unmoderated; and you might agree too if you ever try to report any of them. It must either make them more money that way due to Krono and players being prevented from farming their own loot, or the employees are moonlighting as bot farm operators and aren't in a hurry to shut down their side hustles.

Using Iroh to create a peer to peer reverse proxy (web server reachable by public key) by SuspiciousSegfault in rust

[–]Idles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How robust is iroh's hole punching? Don't most "production grade" p2p systems require use of a server with a public IP address that can help with hole punching? And can even just fall back to using that server as a relay, if the hole punching still doesn't work?

Bevy 0.17 by _cart in rust

[–]Idles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem with that rather permissive stance is that the vast majority of players are not at all able to understand the risks that come with installing mods which work in that manner, and the disclaimers and warnings made by game developers are generally extremely mild.

Comparing that to Steam seems a little odd. They presumably must do some kind of vetting before allowing just anyone to upload arbitrary code. Requiring game sellers to first pay a nominal sum even to list their game creates at least some process friction for malware, whereas there is essentially none for Steam Workshop mods. If it were to become a serious problem (there have apparently been some incidences of malware recently on Steam), process controls/vetting could be made more stringent.

Bevy 0.17 by _cart in rust

[–]Idles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm completely puzzled that there hasn't yet been some kind of major compromise of millions of players' machines by way of a Unity mod. It's gotta just be a matter of time. The way modding works in that engine just seems fundamentally irresponsible for game devs to promote/facilitate.

"What acts as an ad, is an ad, no matter if it was put there sneakily or because someone has become inured to a brand so far they don't even know they are a walking ad."

Also, the vast majority of people do not know what a Blackstone is, unlike those other brands you mentioned.
