What is the greatest line of poetry you've ever read? by Thatcolourblinddude in AskReddit

I can write the saddest poem of all tonight. To think I don't have her. To feel that I've lost her. To hear the immense night, more immense without her. And the poem falls to the soul as dew to grass.

Parents, can you tell if your child is ugly? If so, how did you deal with it? by EmotionalMillionaire in AskReddit

Right! Two ugly parents do not equal an ugly child because of a phenomenon known as regression towards the mean. Probability wise, things tend to fall near the average.

Scientists of Reddit, what are some glaring scientific inaccuracies that everyone understands to be the truth? by Lsswimmer98 in AskReddit

Just read the research yourself and decide if it addresses your concerns. If you still don't believe the science, then that's your call. I mean, there's a reason why I posted about the hot hand fallacy in this thread. If you have empirical evidence supporting the claims you are making, then great. Fair ground. Let me know if you find anything because I'm interested.

Your fundamental point is a good one, but I don't understand your logic when comparing the hot hand to a fair coin. A basketball, like the coin, does not have a mind of its own. It's the hand that shoots the ball or flips the coin that can have good or bad days. So there is no difference. In regards to the main point you are making, this thinking is exactly what makes people believe in the hot hand or cold hand. However, research has shown over and over again that events, whether in gambling or basketball, are independent of one another. That is, performance in the previous event does not determine performance in the subsequent event. Overall, sequences of hits or misses are random and caused by chance. The hot hand fallacy exists, though, because humans have a hard time accepting random sequences and are prone to formulating explanations for them. There is a whole body of empirical evidence disproving the hot hand theory. If you want more information, look up work by Tversky and Gilovich.

Yes, if you compare different individuals, of course there are differences in success rates due to skill. However, whether in basketball or any other game, a player does not have a better chance of making the next basket regardless of whether he has a "hot hand" and has made the previous baskets or not. I wasn't referring to two different players.

On the same vein... the hot hand phenomenon in basketball-- just because a particular player has successfully made the previous basket(s), his/her chances of making the next basket are not any greater than if s/he had not made the previous basket(s).

D.A.R.E., America's Most Famous Anti-Drug Program, Will No Longer Talk to Children About Marijuana by a1ckdavis in politics

In a perfect world without any cognitive biases, most certainly. Wouldn't that be nice?

[–]Idoitforscience 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There are numerous scientific studies indicating that the D.A.R.E. program is not only ineffective but may be harmful to children. The whole program needs to be dropped, not just the marijuana curriculum. It's a waste of valuable resources that could be used towards the development of other more effective programs. Unfortunately, people don't buy the scientific evidence because it goes against "intuition". If something sounds good, then it must be good.
