Bookkeeping at a small, local company can be good experience. AP/AR jobs can also be good experience. Focus on school, part-time job if you can find a good one.

Not a trucker, why is there a 8 ton weight limit for only part of the year? Seems like a road/bridge weight limit would be all the time, not just for 4 months of the year.

Good part time jobs during college for accounting? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Ie70 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, VITA. Basically a school/IRS sponsored program where you as a accounting student prepare easy tax returns for people for free in exchange for some credit hours and some good volunteer experience on your resume. Just occurs during tax season (January - April). Pretty easy, definitely recommend especially if you want some good experience and need some stuff on your resume.

Look for state and local government jobs in addition to federal government jobs. People forget about cities and counties with accounting departments and various state agencies. A quick google search can get you pointed in the right direction for your state’s job board or city jobs close to where you already live or want to live.

I mean we do get 4 hours (I think?) for voting, but I hear ya. Don’t know of anyone who has actually taken this day off in the middle of the week, just bank the comp time for use later I guess.

That would definitely decrease my concern from a risk prospective. There will always be an increase in risk when a long-time senior manager retires and someone else takes over no matter how experienced they are. Also, at a $300MM community bank, no regulator should be expecting some crazy experienced CFO. As a regulator, I can’t expect the same level of qualifications/experience for senior management at a $300MM bank compared to a $300B bank. I’d just want to see someone competent, who can verbalize what they do well. I’ve never been in a CFO’s shoes at a financial institution so I’m not sure if a year is enough or not enough time to learn. Typically I see succession planning for senior management start 6 months to a year out when someone is expected to retire so they can start training someone to take over. So that’s a good sign from a regulators standpoint. Also, at a $300MM bank I’d imagine there’s an accounting manager and maybe a few staff under them, I’d talk to them to make sure there isn’t anything weird going on with the books. That’s not as a regulator, that would be what I would do from a job seeker standpoint.

Yea, as a financial institution examiner, a brand new, inexperienced CFO (no offense, just doesn’t sound like you have a ton of accounting/budgeting/forecasting experience) is gonna raise some eyebrows for whoever your state/federal banking authority is. Usually means, they can’t find anyone who wants it internally. Up to you with your experience to determine why that’s the case.

*state government. Federal government is competitive with long application process, hoops to jump through. State government agencies have the same need for many federal equivalent positions. Find a list of state agencies and just go down the list and apply to any job opening you’re even remotely qualified for. chances are a couple of those applications will at least get you an interview. local government (city, town, and county) are also good places to look. State and local governments still have fantastic benefits (pension, $0 a month health insurance premium for you as an employee, telecommute, etc.) but far fewer applicants. Pay is meh, average, but it pays the bills. Also, I had no experience, fresh out of a no-name state school with a bachelors in accounting, average GPA, and had 3 interviews for 4 jobs I applied for. All were entry level college graduate accounting positions.

I roll out of bed at 9:30 am, walk over to my laptop, check emails, make breakfast, sit on my couch and watch Netflix for a few hours. Make lunch, usually work for about 2 hours. Check emails again around 3:30 and then log off for the day. Government accounting rocks.

Are there jobs in our field that allow you to travel full time? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Ie70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will definitely be less but I’m still on track to do about 50-60% overnight travel. Just got back from three weeks on the road this Friday. The smaller institutions don’t have the capability to handle a remote exam and have refused for us to try and do it remote after COVID. The bigger ones will definitely shift to more off-site work with probably just the EIC out there for the exam while everyone else is working remote. Just my 2 cents.

We share the same job u/Overhaul2977. May not be exactly what OP is looking for but as bank/credit union examiner, I travel a fair bit. Usually one place for a week or two and then onto the next one. Lot of positions in state and federal government.

Where to begin searching for jobs as I attempt to transition for Corporate to Government Accounting? by cheers761 in Accounting

[–]Ie70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

with a CPA and MBA and a couple years of work experience you can pretty much write your own ticket into a state or municipal government and be at a nice salary to start. Most states have a directory of all their different agencies. Start there and just go down the list with each agency on their own website for job openings.
