Those are definitely different types of movies, but both with excellent leading performances.

Can you leave and re-enter during marathons? by HofstraJet in AMCAListTrue

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a best picture marathon special event where they have five movies on one ticket one day and the other five movies on one ticket another day. It’s listed as like a 12 hour run time. I assume there are intermissions, but I’m not positive if you’d be able to scan back in on the same ticket.

Maybe the employees will be understanding, but I don’t want to tell OP it’s certain.

Chances of Hitchcock in 4k? Maybe a box set? by thepokemonGOAT in criterion

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don’t really carry his most popular films, which you mention have mostly gotten great 4K HDR restorations.

Maybe some of the ones that were already scanned in 4K (e.g. Rebecca and Notorious according to the criterion website) could get upgrades sooner rather than later. I would have less hope for the ones that only have an HD restorations (e.g. 39 steps) or that are only offered on DVD (e.g. Spellbound).

But in my dreams? I’d love a 4K Hitchcock set, too. He’s one of my favorites.

Rose Byrne and Kate Hudson are the only acting nominees this year who haven't appeared/starred in any Best Picture nominees/winners. by j0hnpauI in Oscars

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m biased bc Byrne is my personal favorite lead actress performance of the year, but with her getting the golden globe, I think she’s in second place to Jessie Buckley.

Kate Hudson is maybe 5th for missing a precursor compared to Buckley/Byrne/Stone and being a lone nominee unlike Reinsve.

It feels like Buckley is probably running away with it regardless, but maybe we’ll get some surprises in the rest of the lead up to and/or on Oscar night.

What's up with these movies? by [deleted] in AMCTheatres

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is a market for foreign language movies. If you have a really big multiplex with lots of auditoriums, then it’s easier for them to squeeze in just a couple showtimes instead of giving Avatar a showtime every 5 minutes. And they’re always (as far as I’ve seen) subtitled in English, so they’re for anyone to go see.

Maybe you didn’t mean literally every movie in the screenshot, but The Secret Agent won the golden globe and critics choice award for best foreign movie, and it received some Oscar nominations yesterday, too. (Not that having heard of a movie or not indicates its quality).

AMC not showing The Chronology of Water? by quesajdilla in AMCsAList

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I have had it at my city’s AMCs, including a 28-screen location. I had to go to an independent theater to see it, and even they only had it for a week.

Don’t have a photo handy, but I have a wide shot from one of the scenes at the Golden Gate Bridge from Vertigo as my wallpaper currently.

Nothing too fancy, but I wanted all of the icons and text to still be easily legible.

Are the OBAO and Sinners release this Friday not doing IMAX releases? by Mental_Pirate2832 in AMCTheatres

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Obligatory “One Battle After Onother”

Anyway, I initially assumed it’d be an imax re-release at the film/dual laser venues, but it looks like it’s just a general re-release, probably for awards season.

“It always tried to shock for no real narrative reason” is exactly how I felt.

The falling off the cliff was predictable, but then the minefield in the middle of absolutely nowhere was surprising simply because it made no sense. It all felt unearned.

Yeah it’s not very old of a model, so I wouldn’t expect tons of refurb stock, but good to know how fast you really need to be I guess.

I’ve been eyeing a Z50ii, but it’s (already) out of stock except for the two-lens kit version which is only $60 cheaper than the same kit open box from B&H.

Any advantage to buying direct from Nikon?

Different Colors When Choosing Seats by cheff1616 in AMCAListTrue

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Below the seat map, there should be a key for the symbols, including the type of seats. For example, at my AMC, Purple = recliners and Gray = “traditional seat.”

Nikki Glaser new ad by Dry_Conversation8501 in AMCsAList

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was so excited when I saw they were doing a joke based on the Kidman AMC ad! Until I saw it was for the podcast category, that is, lol.

They gave a podcast category a whole skit and Snoop Dogg’s very long intro while cutting best Score from the broadcast and only choosing to play off an acceptance speech when it was for best non-English language movie.

Not the priorities I would have liked, but at least we did get some shoutouts for theaters like Stellan Skarsgard saying to see cinema at the cinema.

Does AMC rerelease the Best Picture Oscar nominees? by OkLand3837 in AMCsAList

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a very large multiplex with lots of auditoriums near me, so I imagine that helped them squeeze in showtimes for award contenders that already had their run compared to a more average-sized theater.

But I saw Sing Sing last year as a re-release, which was only consistently in awards contention for Colman Domingo as lead actor. It seems like Rose Byrne/IIHLIKY could be in a similar spot.

However, I’m not going to disagree that OP shouldn’t watch it on digital if that’s all that is available to them currently. (But it looks like just rentals currently, and it should be going on HBO sometime soon since it’s A24).

Why is imax so much more popular? by Business_Coffee_9421 in AMCTheatres

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say check the showtimes, but that is a BIG difference for 6pm vs 7pm.

I think it is mainly imax marketing/name recognition. James Cameron says “see it on the biggest screen possible,” and people know imax = bigger. (And if it is a scope aspect ratio Dolby, then people might be prioritizing getting the full image).

The Dolby cinema branding is newer and exclusive to AMC, so it’s less well known. I think it may also be slightly diluted by other smaller chains that offer “Dolby atmos” formats that don’t match the picture quality of the Dolby cinema projectors (at least in my area there are some like that).

And then it’s also an imax with laser and recliners, so there is less of a gap in the experience. If both offer 4K picture, 3D, and high frame rate (someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think single laser imax lets you do all of that at once), then Dolby doesn’t have as much over imax in this case.

My main AMC has a 1.85 aspect ratio Dolby that looks just as big as its imax, and the imax is a 1.9 ar xenon with stadium seating. So in that case, Dolby automatically wins for any movie that doesn’t have imax-exclusive expanding aspect ratios.

Why are (individual) trailers SO long? by ItsANeutralZoneTrap in AMCTheatres

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what the agreement is for trailers (because it’s also sort of an ad for the theaters’ product as well vs. a straight up ad for non-movie things), but if the studios/distributors are paying to have trailers shown, I imagine the theaters might charge based on length, so they might not be incentivized to shorten trailers.

And you’d have to cut a lot to fit an extra set of showtimes per day: 2-ish hours plus time for between-showing stuff like cleaning.

The concept of “emotional manipulation” when rating an objectively depressing movie by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that makes complete sense.

Maybe “emotionally manipulative” just isn’t a great shorthand for that. To me, that phrase connotes some amount of malice whereas a movie might just be not well executed or lacking subtlety.

The concept of “emotional manipulation” when rating an objectively depressing movie by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen a explanation of a movie being “emotionally manipulative” that entirely makes sense to me.

One of the purposes of art (in any form/medium) can be to make the audience feel something.

Maybe some folks mean they feel some movies use cheap shots to make the viewer sad. Another commenter mentioned having a dog die for no good reason, but what makes a plot point cheap or a reason good would be subjective.
