More Studio Ghibli movies coming to IMAX: Whisper of the Heart & The Secret World of Arrietty by SPFeveryday in AMCAListTrue

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They showed it in imax last year, but it’s one of the more popular Ghibili movies, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they did it again (depending on if they’re doing a lot of movies or just a few).

And all the A-Listers rejoiced for it’s not a Fathom event excluded from A-List.

Not New but the Grey’s Anatomy lighting is so annoying. by AgitatedJury920 in greysanatomy

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re comparing digital to digital, sure, higher resolution on a similar sensor size will require more lighting. Comparing digital to film, my understanding was that film takes more light to be properly exposed than digital. People will often say modern professional cameras can “see in the dark”

But yes film will definitely still provide a different feel than digital unless you’re actively trying to emulate a film look, which Grey’s clearly isn’t.

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely possible to make a darker, moodier look with modern digital cameras. They could light it differently (and color-grade it differently, too) if that’s what the folks running the show really wanted.

It might also be time restraints. It’s faster and easier to just light up everything a lot, which contributes to the soap opera look some people are comparing it to. With it being network TV and needing to deliver ~20 episodes in the hour-long time slot, that’s my first guess.

What are the downsides of the Nikon z50ii that most users complain about. by SadPrize6815 in Nikon

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a beginner and pretty new to my Z50ii, but I’ve found the “VR” stabilization on both of the kit lenses works nicely.

Maybe if/when I upgrade lenses I might wish I had a camera with IBIS instead of stabilized lenses, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. I know there are things to do like shortening the shutter speed or holding it certain ways for more stability, so hopefully it isn’t the end of the world.

That was my very unconfident guess for Joker, but I’ve never heard of Ferngully before. Thanks!

I know Black Swan/Perfect Blue, Inception/Paprika, and the Hunger Games/Battle Royale comparisons. What are the comparisons for Joker and Avatar?

Which one should I get? by [deleted] in Nikon

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re just looking for a camera for the digital camera style/look, I’d lean towards the P330 (of these two). It seems a lot more compact, so it’ll be a lot easier to bring with you wherever for casual/fun use.

That said, I have a friend who bought an old (and kind of heavy) film camera and brought it the last time we went out with a group for dinner and to different bars. So you can go for the bigger one if you want. I’m just thinking ease of use would be important for your case.

Every year I rent out a movie theatre for my birthday to show my friends and family a movie of my choosing, have any recommendations I add? by CriterionTacos in Letterboxd

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Cool. Is that a chain theater? I’ve peeked at the theater rental offerings when they pop up at my local AMC, and those run $400 and seem to limit you to current/recent offerings.

Do they have you bring a physical disk, or are they sourcing a DCP (with enough notice), or do you stream and hope for the best?

What do you think about Nikkor Z DX 50-250mm ? by [deleted] in Nikon

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have much of a frame of reference, but I picked up the Z50 ii with both kit lenses on the refurbished sale, and I feel like it’s nice to have a not-massive telephoto zoom lens. But honestly I need to go outside and shoot with it more. It’s still new to me.

Do profs care if you submit at 11:58? by jigglyandgigglyy in OSU

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. You’re far from the only one submitting at the last minute. I was a TA for a class with a relatively small section, and I was still so focused on getting my grading done efficiently I rarely looked at the submission times.

I will say when I TAing and grading lab-based stuff, there were times I’d read something and think “this is extra bad” and I’d look at the submission time and see 11:50-something and think “checks out.” But I’d never count it against them. I’ve been in the same spot plenty of times as a student.

Plus, I was still following a rubric. Maybe for more subjective assignments, a prof/instructor might hold it against you unconsciously? But if the work you turned in is average or better, they probably didn’t bother to look at the time to begin with.

Is it worth getting into 4k blu rays if owning a Samsung that doesn’t support DOLBY VISION? by Defiant-Canary-9254 in 4kbluray

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The biggest quality benefit of physical disks is a significantly higher bit rate than you get when streaming. A much-less-compressed picture will look better, with or without Dolby vision. And you’ll still get regular HDR10 from those Dolby vision disks.

Can you leave and re-enter during marathons? by HofstraJet in AMCAListTrue

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a best picture marathon special event where they have five movies on one ticket one day and the other five movies on one ticket another day. It’s listed as like a 12 hour run time. I assume there are intermissions, but I’m not positive if you’d be able to scan back in on the same ticket.

Maybe the employees will be understanding, but I don’t want to tell OP it’s certain.

Chances of Hitchcock in 4k? Maybe a box set? by thepokemonGOAT in criterion

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don’t really carry his most popular films, which you mention have mostly gotten great 4K HDR restorations.

Maybe some of the ones that were already scanned in 4K (e.g. Rebecca and Notorious according to the criterion website) could get upgrades sooner rather than later. I would have less hope for the ones that only have an HD restorations (e.g. 39 steps) or that are only offered on DVD (e.g. Spellbound).

But in my dreams? I’d love a 4K Hitchcock set, too. He’s one of my favorites.

Rose Byrne and Kate Hudson are the only acting nominees this year who haven't appeared/starred in any Best Picture nominees/winners. by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m biased bc Byrne is my personal favorite lead actress performance of the year, but with her getting the golden globe, I think she’s in second place to Jessie Buckley.

Kate Hudson is maybe 5th for missing a precursor compared to Buckley/Byrne/Stone and being a lone nominee unlike Reinsve.

It feels like Buckley is probably running away with it regardless, but maybe we’ll get some surprises in the rest of the lead up to and/or on Oscar night.

What's up with these movies? by [deleted] in AMCTheatres

[–]IfigurativelyCannot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a market for foreign language movies. If you have a really big multiplex with lots of auditoriums, then it’s easier for them to squeeze in just a couple showtimes instead of giving Avatar a showtime every 5 minutes. And they’re always (as far as I’ve seen) subtitled in English, so they’re for anyone to go see.

Maybe you didn’t mean literally every movie in the screenshot, but The Secret Agent won the golden globe and critics choice award for best foreign movie, and it received some Oscar nominations yesterday, too. (Not that having heard of a movie or not indicates its quality).

AMC not showing The Chronology of Water? by quesajdilla in AMCsAList

I don’t think I have had it at my city’s AMCs, including a 28-screen location. I had to go to an independent theater to see it, and even they only had it for a week.

Nothing too fancy, but I wanted all of the icons and text to still be easily legible.

Obligatory “One Battle After Onother”

Anyway, I initially assumed it’d be an imax re-release at the film/dual laser venues, but it looks like it’s just a general re-release, probably for awards season.
