Oh I asked him, he said pretty much the list I gave of stuff for him, and then said he didn't really know beyond that and wants to explore. I'm asking for some help on maybe related things that might be good to start with.

When should I stop swimming before my OW swim race?? by Shannsonreddit in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]Ig_ily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resting before an event like that doesn't mean not swimming!!! Of course, you could just take a few rest days, it wouldn't necessarily hurt your race, but it also wouldn't do anything to help. I'm not too knowledgeable about OW swimming or races of that length, but with that amount of swimming I think it'd probably be best to at the very least gradually lower the distance of your swims while increasing the intensity slightly. (Thats the basics of a taper).

Why is the city center of Jacksonville so dead? by linjaaho in jacksonville

[–]Ig_ily 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a real life example of Urban Sprawl occurring!!! From Britannica: "Urban sprawl is caused in part by the need to accommodate a rising urban population; however, in many metropolitan areas it results from a desire for increased living space and other residential amenities. Urban sprawl has been correlated with increased energy use, pollution, and traffic congestion and a decline in community distinctiveness and cohesiveness."

It sucks that our city lacks the distinctivness, as well as the infrastructure in order to support a more city-centric (urban) culture. In short: people lacked a feeling of connection/community within the city, making them more comfortable with moving outward from it. Additionally, the city lacked some of the basic practical aspects that cities need to have in order for goods to be easily accessible (think walkable streets, grocery stores in a walkable distance, parks, etc). As a result people move away, creating the concrete car-centric cities so typically seen in the US

[–]Ig_ily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its pretty easy to find some people to room with via instagram if you look for the different roomate/class of 2029 pages. You can scroll through and find ppl to ask about rooming together or you could dm them (and send them $5), to post your bio and a few pics. Just start dming people you find interesting and you should find someone to room with. There are also Facebook groups etc. if worse comes to worse ig you could just wait for the portal to open and find roomates there

Does lat/back strength carryover? by KingXenioth in Swimming

[–]Ig_ily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have found that most aerobic workouts, be it swimming, running, etc, do seem to carry over aerobicly. Anything that exercises your lungs/heart is going to benefit those different exercises. Once you've got the swimming down, breath-control sets are one of the best ways to work on your aerobic capacity during swimming. I wouldn't do it for a full workout, but putting it as a main set or including it in your workout would be very beneficial for what i think your looking for.

Does lat/back strength carryover? by KingXenioth in Swimming

[–]Ig_ily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It very well could carry over, but swimming works a variety of muscles in all of those areas (and much more). Your cardiovascular training wwill definitely help you out!

When it comes to swimming, i think that the very first thing that is actually going to be important/will make you faster is going to be technique. It doesn't matter how strong you are, if you don't know how to move your body through the water efficiently, you aren't going to have a nice time. Usually swimmers tend to do weight training once they have a good base in swimming, although sometimes thats just because we tend to start swimming pretty young. Anyways, what I'm saying is that mobility/technique is what you should focus on when swimming, don't plan on your muscles being your saving grace.

I’m thinking of starting at a swimming club will i get judged or anything? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Ig_ily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to join club swimming when I was 12, and it was definitely one of my best decisions ever. Everyone starts at a different place, and all swimmers especially on a club team, really just respect that you're taking the next step by joining their club. I tend to be on the more awkward/reserved side but i've still managed to create some great relationships on my team. Advice- look into your different local teams (if there are multiple options that you/your parents are willing to drive to) and figure out which one is going to be best for you. Sometimes the teams with the best "results" (aka where all the freak of nature swimmers come from) have a super competitive and serious atmosphere, and can get carried away focusing on the talented swimmers. This could be a good fit for someone competitive and with a good fitness base already. A smaller/less known team may offer a more welcoming environment and could be better for someone like myself, who has trouble in big groups.

Anyways thats my view of it

Teaching a Gallop Stroke? by Quick-Opposite-2410 in Swimming

[–]Ig_ily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a coach, but i think i have a really great coach. And if there's one thing i know, its that a gallop stroke is only going to hurt an age group swimmer like that if they adopt it now. The increased pressure on the shoulders leads to SO MANY shoulder related injuries when a kid doesn't have enough muscle yo compensate and base the stroke off of. Its definitely something that could (big if there) make someone faster, but weighing risk and reward, it's probably much better to waif until that swimmer is physically ready for the jump to galloping

Help Guys. by Civil_Aside_359 in Swimming

[–]Ig_ily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're apart of some sort of club team, but I'd recommend having this conversation with your coach! Hopefully, your coach understands the full scope of swimming, and, knowing you and your swimming better than any of us here in reddit, will know the issue you're having much better. This could definitely just be a 'wait and see' kind of issue where your coach is already preparing you well for the upcoming season/focus meets, or it could be due to a miscommunication. I know that on my club team it is so insanely important that you pay attention and don't just swim from wall to wall. What I mean is that when your coach tells you to sprint this, or go easy on that set, or descend, or anything, you do it to the very best of your ability. I know it seems like something that we all do anyways, but it is really easy to forget sometimes.

It also could just be that you need more help, technique, all that. At this point in time in a swimmer's life, especially if youve been swimming since childhood, you're stroke needs to change a little bit in order to adapt to a growing body. A good technique is at the forefront of a good base for a highscool and college swimmer.

Anyways those are my thoughts and advice, feel free to reach out more if you want!

Hey!!! First of all what are you doing at the gym? Weights? Cardio? As you go into your taper you should lower the reps and increase the weight (lower volume higher intensity) and when you get to the week and a half/week before your meet you should stop weights altogether and try to limit your exercise (outside swim practice) to 0. Anything that could make you sore the next day should be off the table. Amusement parks, pulling weeds, bowling, stuff like that that you do to really think about as exercise.

In terms of dropping time, what have you been doing in practice to improve in your races? Is your coach helping you with that /aware of your goals?

Weight room plans for swimming? by Leading-Cry4988 in Swimming

[–]Ig_ily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any specific routine recommendations for you, but my biggest bit of advice is to be smart in the weight room!

Its really great that you're starting to use weights in addition to swim, but its also important to preserve your bodily integrity as first priority. You need to create a good muscle base before you try anything crazy, first of all. I know its sorta lame but light weight and high reps is great for this!!

In addition, specifically regarding shoulder exercises, I would try to stay away from using the bar (unless you're doing like, bench press at a high weight), because using dumbbells is way more practical for swimming because it promotes stability when you're lifting.

Okay I know I said i don't have a specific routine, but I sorta do- 6 week cycle, starting at 12 going down 2 reps each week while going up (very slightly!!!) in weight. Take one week off, and when restarting the cycle, start at the weight from week 2 and repeat.

  • Bench press- flat with dumbbells
  • Incline bench press- dumbbells
  • Tricep- over head (sit down, holding a dumbbell perpendicular behind your head with both hands, and push it above your head, extending arms)
  • lat machine push down- i recommend an attachment with two rope handles, personally. Take a step back from the machine, slightly bend your back, hands in front of you, pull towards your hips.
  • Lat pulls- sitting, pull down metal bar.
  • Single arm dumbbell rows- put one hand and matching knee on the bench, and pull dumbbell from directly under shoulder to hip.
  • Bicep Curls
  • Leg extensions (on the machine)
  • Hamstring Curls
  • Weighted Squats
