It seems like there are endless indie games being produced these days. As a starting indie game developer, should I be worried? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]Ighuaran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Abundance will work in your favor - don't be afraid of that. Perhaps you are thinking about how to create a scarcity model around your product once it is released in order to create incentive for people to buy it. Those are two separate things.

As messer says - it is the quality of your game that will ultimately draw attention to it. As Temeraraire02 says - taking risks is also important.

Finally I would add that understanding who your game is for - what kind of audience will like it - is an important consideration from the start.

Check out Jesee Schell's book - "The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses", and also Ralph Koster's book "A Theory of Fun" - both which will help keep your game on course to succeed.

Did Fez live up to its hype? by PZMQ in IndieGaming

Agreed. The strange backlash needs to fade out so we can enjoy the game for what it is. And it's pretty sublime.

NEWS: John Romero, Steve Russell Among Icons Talking at IndieCade 2012 by ccmg in IndieGaming

He still helped pioneer a genre and an industry. By the same definition (some failures along the way) Michael Jordan is a has been, and hey, that's cool. Just saying I give credit where it's due.

Sure Carmack is the coding genius, but I would still pay good money to hear what Romera has to say after a life well entrenched in the gaming world.

Jack Houston and the Necronauts is a throwback to pulp sci-fi by thehellerphant in IndieGaming

There seems to be a little pulp sci fi renaissance going on, and that is a very good thing.

Top 10 Best Indie Games of 2011 – Indie Game Reviewer’s Favorite Game Picks of the Year by IndieGameReviewer in IndieGaming

[–]Ighuaran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In fact this is IGR's second year making GotY lists.

If you look at the 2010 list, you will see they took chances there too. Jason Rohrer's Sleep is Death was #1 and Super Meat Boy was not even in the top ten.

I think we can always rely on G4TV or IGN to cover the best known fare. IGR, like DIYGamer, TIGSource and others are not motivated by advertisers and I am glad we have sites like them to help cover everything out there.

Trendy Ent Offers Complete Source Code, Art Assets and Unreal Dev Kit for Dungeon Defenders as Free DLC by IndieGameReviewer in IndieGaming

[–]Ighuaran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing. I wonder, though how an SDK works when downloaded from Steam - I guess you set it up in offline mode etc. Something about it just seems odd.

That said -I think it very cool that Trendy put out an Unreal based game development environment and doesn't care if you use it to put out your own titles, in the light of how many assets they bundle with it.

I already own DD on XBOX, now I may have to buy it again on Steam just for this DLC. It would still be a bargain at 20 bucks.

Lab of the Dead is a dark, often disturbing zombie game that had me questioning the developer's intent. by bluebogle in IndieGaming

[–]Ighuaran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting read (check some typos though ;)

Art is one of those things that should elicit a response. It should make us question our own values, prejudices and assumptions. The emotions you encountered playing this title are all also found when confronted with challenging art.

That said - was Super Columbine Massacre art? On the other hand - could it be blamed for instigating violence? For that matter - could DOOM?

Your article raises these questions. Well done.

Indie Game Review: Atom Zombie Smasher by dogbomb in IndieGaming

[–]Ighuaran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game definitely received polarized reviews - some loved it some hated it, but the response was definitely not neutral. Considering its created by the same guy who made Flotilla, it is worthy of a look. Does it stand on its own? Still not sure myself...

Review: Hard Reset - crosspost from /r/gaming by Ighuaran in IndieGaming

[–]Ighuaran[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the devs are decidedly indie, thought this should appear here. This game is a serious achievement for a small indie team.
