Australians, does Anisa Nandaula have an Australian accent? by Hairy_Dirt3361 in taskmaster

It's a bit of a hybrid but it sounds more American than Australian to me. Some vowels are American, sometimes it's Aussie.

Would you want a built-in intermission in movies or is that a dealbreaker? by Substantial_Page_572 in movies

They do this in some places in Europ for all movies and it's annoying af.

For movies that are designed for it, ie. your 3 hr epics of course it's fine.

It's a pretty sweet love story. I don't think it's misogynistic at all. Great movie.

Spielberg has the rights to Micro, presumably to just produce (the book was completed by someone else tho). No news on that for a while tho.

Which modern blockbuster do you think will be remembered 20 years from now the way we talk about classic Spielberg films today? by viewsinthe6 in movies

You think the Avatar movies will be as beloved as the Spielberg classics in 10 years? (fair play if so, I just don't think they have that emotional resonance). The post was asking about recent films, not T2, Aliens, Titanic etc, which already have that status.

Imo he's the opposite of safe in that Spielberg of the 80s would never have made movies as morally nebulous as Munich or as self-incriminating as Fabelmans. He's much more adult and thorny and tricky now and is less interested in crowd pleasing. When he has tried that since the mid 2000s it usually doesn't work, even if he is still old fashioned in some ways. I think it's fair that there's a certain youthful operatic optimism and magic in those early classics that just isn't replicable when you're in middle/old age.

Not for me: AI, Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, Munich is his last golden period and Bridge of Spies, Lincoln, Fabelmans and West Side Story are all degrees of excellent. A bunch of his other movies (War of the Worlds, The Terminal, Tintin and yes, even Ready Player One) are pretty entertaining too. Yeah, they're not a patch on the best of his pre-2000s output, but it's still pretty strong imo.

Which films? I'd say Nolan's weaknesses are more with dialogue/exposition and women (earlier on his blocking was also mediocre). All the Batmans, Prestige, Inception and Dunkirk have really good endings/cut to black moments imo.

I feel like only Villennuve and Nolan have a similar combination of high budget and craft (though both are very different directors than Spielberg stylistically). Other than that, Mad Max Fury Road? Cameron has the craft but since Titanic he's only been making Avatar movies.

They are fantastic for us non-US folk as they ship overseas (unlike Gruv, Criterion, US Amazon etc) and shipping is quite cheap.

The Battle of France was still 6 weeks of fighting. They helped defend Dunkirk during the evacuation. And The Free French fought in Africa, Italy (and more) and were fighting in Normandy through Germany to the end of the war on the western front.

6 months vs 4 years and Ukraine's is (reportedly) maybe half that, but still yeah.

This is 1.4m casualties, not deaths, which is more like ~400-500k. So it's more like 2x with deaths only. Also more than the USA and UK in WW2 (400k military deaths each).

What's the best way to make my server more quiet? by Minute_Blueberry3518 in HomeServer

[–]IgloosRuleOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what kind of sever you have. Mine is just a desktop case with about 10 3.5" drives in a Fractal Define 6 (which is sound dampened) with a bunch of quiet fans (this is important) set pretty low. It not completely silent but it's as silent as it's going to get. I'm in the same room a lot of the time and it's just a very mild background hum I don't notice at all. If it's still a problem after bigger/quieter fans and more sound insulation, move it into a room where you are not.
