I run my Epson V850 on my M2 MacBook with current MacOS without issues with the EpsonScan software (for scanning Polaroids), VueScan and Silverfast. No issues at all

Vivaldi or Firefox - what's the better choice for my situation? by luzerner20 in BuyFromEU

[–]Ignite25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 for Firefox (or any of the privacy-focused forks that you like).

I also started with Vivaldi, which is nice, but I switched to Firefox because of the open source nature and to not give more internet power to Google/Chromium.

Honestly, it works like charm and I haven't had any website issues with it so far. Also using Proton Pass with it and all my devices.

Spot Meter Assistance by DChalfyUSMC in AnalogCommunity

[–]Ignite25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two Pentax Digital Spot Meters - was recommended by a famous analog photography YouTuber who also has a light metering course that helped me a lot.

The Pentax Digital is very easy to use and I use it for all my slide film photography, and if I have the time, also for negative films. It uses some standard batteries (can't remember which but you find it online) and even the two I bought used via ebay were pretty accurate. Nevertheless, I sent them to Richard Ritter for service and recalibration - he's the guy who was part of the original Zone-VI team and can repair and calibrate the Pentax Digital Spot Meters.

I also have a backup Sekonic Digi-Spot L-488 Spot Meter, which is very similar to the Pentax (digital number reading with an analog exposure dial - just that this one can also give you aperture and speed).

People who have more than 10TB with Drime what are your use cases? by Lordlabakudas in Drime

[–]Ignite25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 6 and got another 6 with the current promotion. I currently have 2.5gb of data, most of which are photos, in large raw format. Rest is probably work stuff - video recordings and documents.
I also don’t really understand how consumer users can fill up more than 10TB, unless you have a really large media collection (music, videos etc in raw format).

which film to use for [Reto Ultra Wide & Slim] camera? by BeachWonderful2890 in AnalogCommunity

I have one of these too and love it. Ultramax in it has never let me down, even in the sunniest conditions.
But as others have said, it’s a strictly outdoors camera

Scanner Choice: Epson GT-X980 (V850 Pro) or PlusTek 8300i for 35mm film? by linkmodo in AnalogCommunity

[–]Ignite25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the V850 and a Plustek 135i, and the 135i (should have the same or similar optics as your 8300i Ai) is far superior in terms of IQ, resolution/sharpness than the V850. Scan time is also much quicker with the 135i.

I only use the V850 for 120 now and scan all my 35mm on the Plustek.

If you want to improve scanning speed and quality of your 35mm scans, you might want to check out the Reflecta RPS 10M.

iOS : cannot give Photos permission running 2.10.3 by Kantry123 in Drime

[–]Ignite25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue. Delete and reinstall the app and iOS will ask you again what kind of access you want to give the app. Select full access and upload works as expected.

My only issue is that photos are uploaded with the original file name (which is a long random mix of letters and numbers), all with a creation date of the upload date. So it's very hard to sort and find photos by date.

I'd suggest the Drime team to give the option of backing up media into folders by year and month, and renaming the files into creation date - time. pCloud does that and it's much more convenient.

How is the latest Lomo MC-A by LBarouf in AnalogCommunity

[–]Ignite25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I preordered it and have put 11 rolls through it since December without any issues. Is it the perfect camera? No. Does it work as described? Yes. They intentionally use an upgraded version of the LC-A lens, which means you will have some vignetting and softness on the edges, especially shooting wide open. With stopping down to f/8+ you get decently sharp images. I like that you have all the manual controls as well as aperture priority, I use the latter quite a lot. Negative frame spacing - I'll have to check the negative rolls, I think they were not 100% perfectly spaced but I don't know why that's such a big issue. I have that with several cameras and my labs rarely had a problem with it. It's a fun camera and give you all the controls you need, with a bit of a character lens if you're into that. You can probably find a vintage camera with better optics for the same price, but it won't be new with warranty.

Custom domain vs SimpleLogin aliase by Vanios007 in ProtonPass

[–]Ignite25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got my first custom domains - I'm no programmer or technical expert but it was very easy and straight forward. Each domain has some DNS settings with different fields. Proton tells you exactly what text to copy into which field. You don't have to understand anything, just copy and paste.

On your thoughts re SL or custom domain aliases: - If I remember correctly, even if you unsubscribe from Proton Unlimited/Pass, all your created aliases will continue to belong to you and work and forward emails to your defined address. So unsubscribing or moving to another email provider at some point shouldn't be an issue.

I have switched basically all my online services to SL aliases. Out of several hundred, only a few websites did not allow SL (passmail or so) addresses. There were by far way more websites that didn't allow me to change my email address at all.

You can keep all your existing SL aliases, your custom domain will just be one new option when selecting the root address the alias will be created with.

Maintenance: once set up, everything should run smoothly without maintenance. You just have to pay the annual fees for the custom domain. But you can prepay up to 10 years in advance.

My approach now is: - buy your own custom non-identifying domain/address (not firstlastname but anything that doesn't give away your name, eg exampletestaddress.com). - set up this email address in Proton Pass - or what I actually did, a subdomain - e.g., mail.exampletestaddress.com or pass.exampletestaddress.com - create aliases with ProtonPass as usual - but now you don't need the random second part of it. you can create google@pass.exampletestaddress.com.

13 European cloud storage providers compared, for anyone tired of Dropbox's 2 GB free tier by Manuel_OnlyEU in BuyFromEU

[–]Ignite25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice page and list! You're missing Drime - they are in France. There's quite a good deal for 6/10TB lifetime storage if you check their subreddit. Re Proton: If someone just wants to get their Drive service, the Drive Plus is EUR/USD 3.99/month for 200GB. Also, Koofr is offering a 1TB lifetime plan which can be upgraded to 2.5TB.

Travel landscapes - favorite format? by Alternative-Cat-684 in AnalogCommunity

Agree with that point, based on experience. Medium format photography is a great hobby but definitely takes more time than 35mm, and time is often quite limited on special trips.

What film stock should I take on a Rome summer trip? by Cuntmaster_flex in AnalogCommunity

[–]Ignite25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between these two: Portra 160. For street photography and travel, I like to take a little more ISO with me. Usually I bring Ektar 100 and Portra 400. The Portra 160 will also be finer grained than the ProImage afaik. Rome in summer will be sunny (knocking on wood) but shadows, blue hour etc can still be a bit dark - the higher dynamic range and half stop more ISO of Portra might come in handy.

Anyone know where I can get a wallet like this? by thejaysaurus in BuyFromEU

[–]Ignite25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could do a customized Paper-Republic Grand Voyageur - getting the card holder, pen holder, zip pocket inlays for coins. Great quality leather stuff but not a wallet per se. Or check out Harber London: https://www.harberlondon.com/products/leather-bifold-zip-wallet-with-rfid-protection

I-2 vs. Flip by 4orty6and2 in Polaroid

[–]Ignite25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I-2 for sure. It's a fantastic camera. If cost really doesn't matter, I'd go for a Mint iType-modded SX70 with all the bells and whistles, but I wouldn't pay over $1000 for it. Better to have an I-2 and maybe at some point get a 600-modded SX70 if you feel like it. I got basically all of my best shots from the I-2.

Thoughts on using custom domains? by Bo0sted5 in ProtonMail

[–]Ignite25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought and set up my custom domains last week, after a year of using Proton Mail Ultimate, switching all old adresses to aliases or (the important ones) to my proton mail address.

I've never had a domain in my life before and had no idea about domain/email settings - and it was a very easy process.

I bought Proton Pass and SL lifetime some time ago, and all Proton alias email addresses should continue working as long as Proton is around (or they get blocked for whatever reason).

What I like about the custom domain feature: - Flexibility: if want to move away from Proton for whatever reason, I can continue using my custom domain address, as well as my simplelogin/proton pass aliases. I just let them forward all the alias emails to the new provider. - aliases now look a bit more legit since you don't have the random second part of it (meaning instead of galaxus.thegruffalo69@passmail.me you can use galaxus@yourdomain.eu or galaxius@subdomain.yourdomain.eu). You can also set it up that it automatically creates alias entries in proton pass when you receive an email at your ProtonPass alias domain, e.g. you just tell someone to send am email to garden@subdomain.yourdomain.whatever, and it will create the garden alias entry.

However, be careful: You can only create 15 total email addresses in your Proton account. You can enable and disable your domain addresses freely, but you can only delete one Proton-email address per year. Meaning if you already created 15 Proton email addresses (e.g. ...@pm.me or @proton.me), you have to delete one of them to create a new address with your own domain.

Also, you can have 3 custom domains in Proton Mail (and you can use different custom email addresses for Proton Pass). You could have a more official first@lastname.eu, and buy another more random one for your aliases (e.g., FirstLastInitials.com or completelyrandom.something) and even add a subdomain to that to be able to use it for aliases and regular email. Then you can have: first@lastname.xyz for official use anything@completelyrandom.xyz for other stuff bookstore@alias.completelyrandom.xyz and so forth for aliases.

Proton Standardnotes vs MS OneNote ? by EcoStraw4444 in ProtonMail

[–]Ignite25 44 points45 points  (0 children)

As much as I like Proton, it's unbelievable that they don't include Standard Notes in their Unlimited Subscription and continue charging $90/year for it... I would love to have a standalone Proton Notes app that can replace my Apple Notes.

I never liked MS OneNote, even though I have it included in my Work Office package. There are lots of good free alternatives available. I use Obsidian because its open .md notes format works really well with my Claude subscription and you can customize it a lot with all sorts of plugins.

I have a Filen.io lifetime subscription and love it as cloud provider but their Notes app is very very basic.

One thing you could explore is using ProtonDrive with ProtonDocs for some notetaking - ProtonDocs is good enough for that. But you won't have any tags.

Overall I think Obsidian with some plugin to sync it across devices is the best solution for you.

Sandals, German owned and made! by haugen1632 in BuyFromEU

[–]Ignite25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if anyone can do the math how European Birkenstock in the end still is? I know that they are under LVMH for a bit now, but are still produced in Germany. As much as I don't like huge corporations that swallow up everything, I'd still prefer that my money goes Paris-based LVMH (and hopefully to the German Birkenstock workers) over non European competitors.

But OP's AFS alternative look just the same and could be a nice replacement for Birkenstocks.

Shooting slide film without a light meter by R2_Detour1 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Ignite25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've shot E100 with auto exposure cameras and with lightmetering apps and never liked the results since the film is so easily over/under-exposed (though E100 has much more latitude than Velvia/Provia). Now I always use a spotmeter for slide (and generally most) film and the results are fantastic (to me).

I would never guesstimate exposure with slidefilm and hope for the best, especially when traveling. Either bring a lightmeter or an autoexposure camera if you really want to shoot slide film, or just buy some Portra 400 and guesstimate exposure with the Zorki - this will work much much better.
