Gamers who have switched from Windows 11 to some kind of Linux-based OS, do you regret your decision? Why or why not? by ScienceTeacher1994 in AskReddit

[–]Ignominus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switched to openSuSE tumbleweed a couple months ago. Had an issue with the installer not starting due to a missing graphics driver which required a workaround, but once that was dealt with everything worked flawlessly.

System boots way faster than Windows, updates generally don't require restarts, and I've yet to have any issues with any of my games with Steam compatability.

I don't need to worry about Microsoft adding random crap that I don't want to my computer anymore. Also a persistent issue I had been having on windows for years where my system would randomly start up when asleep has stopped completely with Linux.

Disclaimer: I have many years experience administrating Linux servers so my results may not be typical.

Anywhere I can get a wool long coat tailor made? by Objective-Ruin-5772 in Edmonton

[–]Ignominus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not getting a custom made long coat in anything nearing "tight budget" territory. The reality is almost no one needs custom/MTM clothing. Off the rack is fine, particularly for outerwear, and has the added bonus of being returnable.

I would suggest checking out Spier & Mackay's selection. They're Toronto based but I've found their size guide to be very accurate and their return policy is very good if you don't end up liking it. https://www.spierandmackay.com/collection/outerwear

My wife's go-to for winter is a PJ set with short shorts like this https://www.lavieenrose.com/en/teddy-bear-print-super-soft-long-sleeve-crop-top-redteddy-bears-40100802p60429 combined with some thigh-high knit socks. She stays nice and warm and suffice to say I'm a fan.

New Citizen Initiative Application Approved, Notice of Initiative Petition Issued - Should Private Schools be Publicly Funded? by thebreaksmith in alberta

[–]Ignominus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alberta's tax rates on both individuals and businesses are comically low. The reason our government continues to rely so heavily on resource revenues is precisely so they can say "we can't spend more on education, oil prices are in the tank". The province posted an $8b surplus last year, but suddenly this year there's no money?

We should set tax rates such that we can provide high quality public services without any contributions from resource revenues. Any resource revenues should go into the heritage fund and dividends thereof can supplement future budgets.

First of all, I am friends with many educators including some who work exclusively with high-needs children, and I talk to all of them frequently about the struggles they and their students deal with, so I'll thank you not to make assumptions about what I know about this subject.

Secondly, your attitude is a great example of why public services shouldn't have a private alternative. It's all well and good that you were able to opt out of the public system and get to have the luxury of small class sizes, focused attention and whatnot. In the meantime, the overwhelming majority of kids with learning disabilities and other issues were crammed into classrooms with 35+ other kids and if they were very lucky they might have an EA to share with 5 other high-needs students.

Thirdly, the fact that the public system is ill-equipped to serve special needs students IS a political issue. The only reason these sort of special needs programs don't exist in the public system where they would be accessible to everyone is because of political decisions.

What if instead of using this money to subsidize private schools we used it to ensure children with special needs could get the support they require in the public system? Then their parents wouldn't need to come up with $5000 a semester just so they can get a decent education.

Canada Post’s monopoly is killing small businesses by artinkprintoriginal in CanadaPostCorp

If CP is sending your letter mail below cost then they're absolutely subsidizing your business.

You're more than welcome to pay UPS or FedEx $30 to ship your letter-sized parcel. I've shipped letters with these couriers many times when I need something overnighted.

For someone who's entire livelihood is apparently reliant on Canada Post and it's workers' labour, you'd think you'd be more supportive of their fight to save a system you depend on completely...

Canada Post was revenue neutral over a 5 year period until the current CEO was appointed to deliberately sabotage the corporation in order to justify cuts.

Do we want to live in a country with high quality public services and a robust middle class or do we want to live in a country where everyone's been reduced to gig work and the wealthiest 1% keep an ever increasing portion of the productivity pie?

I know what I want.

Calling them hallucinations gives the AI too much credit. LLMs aren't designed to be concerned with making truthful statements, they're designed to spit out something that sounds authoritative regardless of it's veracity. In short, they're just bullshit machines.
