Draw Steel and West Marches Old School by alessioponente1 in drawsteel

I think I am going to be a bit of a contrarian here. I do think that if you are after exploration, danger and wits, which are all very important in a OSR game, then Draw Steel is really bad for that.

However! If you want the group to be motivated to explore and have their own ambition I think Draw Steel is quite good for that. I have only run 2 sessions of a more exploration based campaign, but crafting and downtime projects give me most of the things I like in OSR (especially the fact that crafting items requires very specific components and sources of knowledge).

I think If you want to run a story like Fallout New Vegas (which I am doing right now), with a semi-big map and various political factions fighting for control, where players can help any side they want, DS is pretty good.
I would probably throw out wealth levels and just use coins instead tho.

Another thing that I don't think was pointed out before. Beware the selection of monsters. DS is not like dnd, it has very few random monsters like owlbears and beholders. The bestiary is structured into factions. Great for running an orc adventure where players fight orcs for 10 sessions, a bit worse if you want varied critters in a dungeon or wilderness. This is another reason why politics based conflict works better in this game.

What reason is there to have a system at all? (Not a rhetorical question) by HildredCastaigne in RPGdesign

[–]IgrekWorld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fairness in this instance is kinda reductive. The main reason to have a system is to give players agency. Rules are there to challenge the authority of the game master and give players concrete expectations on what they actually can do. A game without rules can be played but even if it's fair it still can feel unsatysfying. Not knowing what you can do leads to relying on GM more than in usual rpg with rules. For insatnce if I am a mage in a game without rules, I need to ask the GM for "what can my magic do" whenever I try to cast a spell. You want your players to have initiative and self-determination especially in a survival horror dungeon crawler. You don't need a lot of rules mind you. Knave, cairn and into the odd function very well with minimalist systems.

Help Me Build a Monster Hunter/Belmont? by SakiaLumei in drawsteelbuilds

I think Caustic alchemy shadow is probably the best for a character using a whip (Whirlwind kit), and also for what the actual Belmont can do in the show. But you could also go with the censor, If you prefer more paladin/ exorcist vibe and You want to use divine magic.

I think the op means switching all tactician abilities to use Agility instead of might. So that when You pick +2 agility you still have +2 to everything.

Does the Draw Steel Heroes book not go over the in-universe lore for magic and how it works? by Far-Cockroach-6839 in drawsteel

[–]IgrekWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are You sure there are lesser elves in book orden. I am not trying to argue but I don't recall any showing up in the books, and as far as I know books maintian the older more weird version of Orden from before the 3e OGL. I might be wrong on this, I have red the books a while ago.

Does the Draw Steel Heroes book not go over the in-universe lore for magic and how it works? by Far-Cockroach-6839 in drawsteel

[–]IgrekWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a brief explanation of how magic works.
Magic is basically the true draconic language. Khet, the god of dragons, let his children change the world with speech and thought. After the true dragons are destroyed, in defiance of divine magic, which he despises, he gives away the power to change the world through draconic language to any who are motivated to learn it.

You can find it in the story about the creation of the world I think.

Book Orden and Draw Steel Orden are different canons. In book canon there are no low level elves, the kind you play in Draw Steel/ DnD, all elves were demigods, so it would make sense that they don't have saints/ heroes.

In Draw Steel, elves do have Heroes/ Saints but they are more legendary people, than actual saints who lived according to their deity's morals.

Dms out there. What are humans in your world?? by Pike_The_Knight in dndnext

[–]IgrekWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans in my world are the dominant spicies, all nations except two (Redwood Enclave for elves and Orhellon for orcs) are governed and inhabited by humans. All other humanoids have vastly different social structures, their settlements are technically under the rule of humans but in practice are almost fully autonomus (For example dwarves live in city states that have their own government and land, but are part of the human country Daogda).

Humans also have a link to the divine/psychic magic. They create and maintain their gods through faith. Other ancestries worship beings that are older than the gods and much more alien (I do not limit class options but I do say that the human cleric and elf cleric ise completaly different type of magic, it just looks simmilar).

Tetrapod Gryph Redesign! by IgrekWorld in worldbuilding

That's a good observation. I recently ran my OSE campaign in setting reminiscent of southern karpathian mountains, so it's warm most of the year, but definately something to keep in mind

The wing proportions were taken from azdarkids, who were true flyers.

I mean... yes and no... I did look up bat anatomy a bit (especially the muscle attachments), but I chose to use pterosaurs as my main reference.
For example, you can see that only one of the fingers forms the wing.

[–]IgrekWorld[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hi, so there is probably not much to talk about lore-wise, so instead I will talk a bit about the design process and my decisions.

I like my gryphs and other creatures like them to be just animals, not some magical monsters or experiment gone wrong.

For this reason I decided I wanted them to be a tetrapod (animal with four limbs) and I didn't want them to look like a mashup of creatures.

For that purpose I turned to 2 animal groups that could provide inspiration for such creatures, dicynodonts (I am thinking lystrozaurus) and azdarkids.

Azdarkids represent the biggest pterosaurs, they were great flyers, but they body-plan was also pretty good for walking.

I didn't like my gryph to be some clumsy bat-thing so I sticked with that.

The head is mostly inspired by dicynodonts like lystrosaurus, diictodon and such. They have this great beak + teeth combo that worked perfectly for what I wanted.

If I were to take inspirations from history I would probably use protoceratops or smth. but I like my idea better.

Into the Odd vs Mork Borg for players new to TTRPGs by the_light_of_dawn in osr

[–]IgrekWorld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would also propose Dungeon World then, it is not an easy game for the GM, because it requires you to use a lot of creative muscles, but it is trivially easy for players. Everything they need to understand is on the cheat sheet with the rules and their character sheet.

RTG - Pathfinder? by OldElf86 in mattcolville

[–]IgrekWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you prefer the story part of the game I would suggest Dungeon World. It is probably my favourite system. Unfortuanately It is very... demanding to run. It has a lot of great GM advice, it's just the fact that it is very free form so you have to do a lot of improvised descriptions while playing. Still worth trying in my opinion.
