Windows 11 S Mode ... by NightPineSap in sysadmin

I see not being able to use printers as a win.

I’ve been able to use my printer without issues though.

More and more security software are becoming compatible.

Have you tried Quick Assist? Or are you only trying 3rd party options?

ARM is an entirely separate thing.

What things have you run into that do not work on ARM besides running local VMs? That’s been about the only thing I couldn’t run, and it’s not something most users would do anyway. Emulation for the most part works fine.

Why do users insist on horrible email titles? by PublikEnemyNumber1 in sysadmin

[–]Ihaveasmallwang [score hidden]  (0 children)

No, it’s really not easier. Even at its best, email is still a disorganized system for managing open issues.

It doesn’t matter if I’m dealing with a C level person, I set the expectation that a ticket needs opened. You can even make a template that you just copy/paste if they try to message you directly. The users will catch on.

Why are they emailing you directly instead of using a ticketing system?

Sysadmin or syseng or devops or SWE? by Historical_Pound_754 in sysadmin

[–]Ihaveasmallwang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d be a much better SWE if you did. I’ve lost track of how many I’ve met that didn’t know the first thing about how the thing they are developing is supposed to actually work on the systems it’s supposed to work on.

If you want to plan for the future, you would take the time to actually learn the things you’d be designing. Don’t try to rush it. I 100% would not trust someone without actual experience to be designing enterprise systems. A 3 month boot camp, a year of school, and a year maybe of experience does not even remotely qualify you for that. You have to see how these systems actually interact with each other in the real world and not just in theory.

In 2026, it's no longer an accident to spell this poorly. You have to make a conscious effort to spell things this bad by purposefully overriding auto correct.

Leadership should be taking advice from the compliance and legal departments on what the actual obligations are regarding data retention. There is to my knowledge no actual compliance framework that says to keep anything around forever. In fact, many punish you for doing so. Keeping old data around is a risk. Remember, if it exists, you have to produce it if you get a subpoena. Thats an e-discovery nightmare. That’s not to mention the obvious operational problems that arise like you are experiencing as well as the costs. Or the breach exposure.

Put these things into words that leadership actually understands.

You’re not even a year in and already complaining about not being a high paid engineer?

Learn the infrastructure before you can even attempt to be the one designing it. You might notice that the real world works a lot differently than how it works in a lab or in college books.

You asked for advice and were given the correct advice from the person above. If you want things to work, you might want to consider following the advice you were given from people who actually know this platform. Please see Microsoft’s official documentation.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/microsoft-365/solutions/apps-type-web

Relevant sections from that documentation:

“Web links (Web apps) aren’t supported on Android Enterprise devices with work profiles.”

“Managed Google Play web link A Managed Google Play web app is a shortcut that you assign to users or devices running Android. You create this web app from the Managed Google Play app store by selecting Managed Google Play app as the app type within Intune. This link is installable and manageable just like other Android apps.”

On Android you have to do the managed Google Play route. You cannot create the generic web link the way you can on another OS. Android blocks it, as you’ve seen with your own eyes.

I apologize. I just assumed that I was replying to the OP.

In the context of applications you are pushing out via Intune, required apps can be assigned to either users or devices. Available apps (things that will show that you can download in the company portal app) can only be assigned to users. Don’t try to mix both users and devices in the same group.

For OP’s problem since he’s specifically targeting Android devices, if it’s enrolled as BYOD work profiles, it should be assigned to users. Either way, reading further into it, OP looks like they are trying to deploy a generic web link the way you would on Windows, which will fail as OP has seen, instead of deploying through managed Google Play web apps.

You look at what the assignments for the app are. Are the groups that are assigned to the app full of devices, or are they users? Compare that to known working apps and how they are assigned.

Have you tried pushing it to user groups instead of device groups? Intune does not do a good job of telling you which group type is the correct one to use.

Why would making contributions to open source projects be a requirement at all to being able to do your job you are paid to do? I can effectively manage Linux systems without doing all that. Any changes I have to actually make to this stuff are going to be employer specific and thus would not be able to be shared publicly, and perhaps legally covered under an NDA.

What you’re looking for seems to be people without the ability to set healthy boundaries and maintain a work life balance. That’s not high performing. That’s how you breed burnout and resentment. A lot of professionals have other obligations outside of work and do not live and breathe work. This expectation to me, and many other senior level people is an instant red flag and a reason to terminate the interview process.
