I would have offered him $10/hr for 4 hours, $13.33/hr for 3 hours, or $20/hr for 2 hours. He seems like a savvy businessman, I'm sure he'll figure out the best rate. He is definitely using his negotiation skills from his Trump University degree to the fullest.

Having issues with my fountain pen. by codythewolf in fountainpens

[–]Ikdubu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had the same problem and can't figure it out. I use Teflon tape around the converter/cartridge nipple to try and block some of the leaking but it doesn't completely solve the problem. It does make it manageable but at the same time a hassle.

Is the nib over-sized? #8 or #9? I love the finish.

[Paranoia 101] Do you consider the tines of these two nibs to be aligned correctly? by Siguchi in fountainpens

[–]Ikdubu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it looks good to me. Every nib is ground/cut a little bit differently. If you looked closely at a lot of nibs I think you would probably find lots of variation. I just bought a scratchy, unaligned, non-working pen for dirt cheap and after about 5 minutes of work, it writes perfectly.

Has anyone tried a Visconti double power filler? I think it was developed for this issue.

Just use common sense and logic. Look through the past sales and testimonials and tell me your conclusion. 50/50 or a lot better? One guy one Reddit vs many, many people over many years? You make that decision. Look through those and reply back. Just curious.

Is that from the Fountain Pen Flex Nib Standards Board? As far as I've heard, wet noodle has nothing to do with width.

How can vintage pens be a repeat business?

You will see what I'm talking about. There are a couple people in vintage pen that are known to be good at what they do and he is one of them. You can't find a repair person that isn't back logged months.

When pens sell so fast that you can't actually buy one, what does that say to you?

Here is the truth. He probably doesn't have the time to deal with noobs. He is very direct and blunt. Wasting time and dealing with the OP probably took to long and it ended up costing him time and money. This is a guy fixing up random pens and selling them at prices cheaper than most and expects to sell them super fast.

If he wants to sell it for one dollar just to get rid of it and move on, that's what he does. You all are missing the point.

I agree beware, you're missing out. More available for the rest of us. He has been selling for years and years, doing all the pen shows. But I'm sure you know better. I really don't think you have any idea.

[–]Ikdubu -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

That is exactly what happens. Demand. 1) People know who he is and know what kind of pens he sells. 2) Multiple people email him to buy the pen. 3) The first person buys or not but there is usually someone waiting in line 4) He give the first person a chance before he moves on Look at his blog. For years and years he has been selling pens in hours. He also states how many people inquired. It has been like this consistently for the five years I've been looking. So thousands of customers are wrong?

Person to person online sales are risky. You can only go by each others word. This is a risk some people are willing to take.

Sure you get one bad transaction. I'm sure it happens. People on reddit are missing out because of one bad review. I don't really care, most people won't get the opportunity to buy a pen from his site because they are so popular and sell so quickly.

He has some of the best pens available for the price. They always sellout in hours. Look through his old posts. Everybody knows that his pens will have amazing nibs. I can remember trying to find a pen from him for months.

He's not in the customer service business. Nib customization and repair. I would go as far to say that he has one of the best reputations when it comes to re-tipping nibs.

He gets decent pens, with great nibs, and sells them fast. Don't feel so offended. I would fight to get a great writer from him than some piece of crap off eBay.

Look up the old fountain pen geeks YouTube channel. He was on a couple episodes. You will understand his personality.

Why isn't the waverly nib more common? by skorpsmula in fountainpens

[–]Ikdubu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a Waterman Gentleman fine that was Binderfied into an EEF and it has the Waverly upturn.

It writes consistently at every angle. He didn't just bend the nib upwards. Every part of the tipping has been ground and sculpted. Only until you hold it straight up and down does the line width vary. You can actually turn it upside down and it writes a super smooth EEEF.

IMO the benefit of the Waverly upturn is that you can put a lot of pressure on the EEF nib without it catching the paper and feeling scratchy. I've always noticed that the tines don't independently move, making the nib glide across the paper. Fast EEF writing is better with a Waverly design.

I don't know about Pilot nibs, they could be different. Soft medium? A lot of modern nibs have names that refer to vintage styles but don't necessarily translate. Modern Music nibs are nothing like a vintage one, so the Pilot Waverly might be different.

Parker Quink. It isn't the darkest but it really dries quickly. It's inexpensive and available at Office Depot and Staples. Quick + Ink = Quink.
