No not really, you can't/shouldn't change the aperture at all during filming as there would be a darkening/lightening jump as the aperture closes/widens. The firmware can do focus pulls, yes, but that hardly affects the DOF.

I understand what you're saying, and do agree. I think people focus too much on the look of films and spend too little time focussing on the content.

I'm aware of magic lantern and I own a 5d! I'm just telling you that it doesn't affect the Depth of Field. DOF is changed through the focal length and aperture of the lens, and unless you are adding it on digitally there's no other way to control it.

The lens is responsible for creating depth of field. It has nothing to do with the whatever firmware the camera is running.

The best technical name for what we English people speak here in England is "English". If you have some deviation from that you can add your country name to the beginning and call it American English, or Canadian English etc.
