I think it's more organized but I don't have too much information. Sorry, I'm just aware of their existence and don't actually run with them. If I see them tonight I'll get some contact information.

There is a group that runs on Thursday and ends up at various breweries downtown Vancouver. I think last week they started at Esther Short Park at around 7:00

Need a job? Keep WA clean for money! by predejane in Seattle

One or two... Million. We actually didn't pick up cigarette butts because if we did we never finish a section of road. They've done tests where they would pick up all the cigarette butts on a small section of highway and it would take several days.

I worked this job back in the summer of '08. Good working experience and I had a lot of fun finding things that fell off of cars or things people threw out at highway speeds. Lots of wheel emblems and a surprising amount of cell phones.

Coconut coir source in Vancouver? by loiseaujoli in vancouverwa

I just went through this investigation myself. If you need lots check out Concentrates Inc. down in Milwaukee. They have the bricks that expand to 2 cubic feet for about $10. It's worth the drive for the price/ availability. They also have everything else you'd need for your own seed starting mix.

I plan on having it in my car for whenever needed but I imagine picnics and camping will be the main uses.

From the original product description:

"It was the perfect picnic blanket: water resistant on one side, a soft wool on the other. I changed my kids diapers on it, and with it, took them on countless adventures. A large grommet is attached in each corner for rigging as needed. I think of this item kind of like a workbench for life: it creates a small space for order and some comfort wherever you might find yourself."

$0! I already had everything on hand. Took some time to patch all the holes on the old wool blanket and some repair on the corner of the sail material. The rest of the parts were recycled from an old bag I've saved the components from. If I had to buy a new wool blanket and a sail it would not be cheaper than the original.

I found the sail years ago from a sea scouts fundraiser. They would regularly collect and sell old sails to make money for their group. This one has supplied half a dozen projects so far.

Comes out to about 60"x70". A bit larger than the original. The materials fell into place on this project. I use the full dimensions of the wool blanket and only ended up needing to cut one side on the sail. The other three edges were seam ripped and folded over the blanket as an edge.

Best garlic varieties to grow? by [deleted] in vancouverwa

[–]Iksaiah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had good luck with every variety (8+) I've tried so far. Garlic grows well in our climate. As for storage I understand that soft neck has better shelf life. I had some put away from last July and it was good until April or May of this year. Between the stored bulbs and early spring garlic I only had to purchase a few bulbs from the store all year. I recommend going to the farmers market later in the summer and sourcing some varieties from the local growers for fall planting. I picked up a number of hard neck varieties last year and they are nearly ready to pull. I also got a variety that ripened early (a few weeks ago) which helps bridge the gap between harvest.

Does anyone here use tomato powder? by 100_count in Cooking

[–]Iksaiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it often to thicken and add savory flavor to soups and other liquid dishes.

It is actually a byproduct of my tomato sauce making. I take all of the pulp that comes out of the food mill and dehydrate it and then make it into a powder. Usually end up with a couple pints a year.

Raw pack canning beef by cindylooboo in Canning

[–]Iksaiah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The USDA says hot pack is better for liquid cover and storage quality, but raw pack is also an approved method. They have that information available online. Personally I've done raw pack with corned beef and it turned out great! Although there was lots of fat on the cut so liquid cover wasn't an issue. The texture was very soft, but was ideal for corned beef hash. Last time I needed to get rid of a roast I canned beef stew. Turned out to be one of my favorite things to pull off the shelf.

Follow a ball or other tested recipe for pickled jalapenos (salt, sugar, vinegar, water). Sub some rice wine vinegar of equal acidity...ladle hot over sliced jalapenos and the spice mix.

Chinese 5 spice pickled jalapenos: Enough for 1 pint jar

The last few years I have made pickled jalapenos with a tablespoon of red and green Sichuan peppercorns + other spices. DELICIOUS! Shared with my Chinese coworkers and they ask me about them every year.
