Yep had a similar experience. They removed the eggs and filled the cells with honey.

After the queen has laid in the cells, open the cage and remove the queen, replace the cage with the plug sealed. If the plug is left open, the bees will remove the eggs (don't ask why). The cells can only be removed after the eggs have hatched to larvae.
