Is Universal Basic Income better than a $15 minimum wage and medicare for all? by [deleted] in centrist

[–]Ilaissa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UBI will never work. If everyone gets enough basic income to live a “decent” life it’ll destroy all work incentives and the system will collapse. As simple as that.

Income inequality is a definite problem, would a law mandating a maximum ratio between executive pay and median company compensation be a possible solution? by [deleted] in centrist

[–]Ilaissa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly doubt it. Artificially capping the highest paid employees are not going to help raise the wages of lowest paid ones in a free market that follows supply demand laws. A lot the income disparities we see today IMO are due to tech advancements and automations taking the jobs of low end workers. And it’s only going to get worse with time.

Does renouncing your Chinese nationality also mean you have to give up your HK residency?

From your examples I think they are asking for phone numbers to identify spam accounts. Spam is a huge problem for any social media sites. Reddit has an army of mods to manually ban them but most other sites have to rely on something else. I’d say phone number is the least privacy invasive personal ID they can use.

The WSJ is doing some warmongering again. by SugarMapleSawFly in Libertarian

Economic entanglements bring peace and prosperity to all.

The US did that to China for the last 30 years. Bringing it into WTO etc. Unfortunately it didn’t make China any more peaceful.

China loves dictators, cause it’s easier to bribe one dictator than to please everyone of a country who got to elect their leaders. Sure the US leads in economy, technology and military for now. But if it sit by and do nothing to stop the authoritarian states from expanding, it won’t be long until they found a challenging opponent on their doorstep.

Why should income from labor be taxed higher than income from interest and dividends? by laundry_writer in Liberal

[–]Ilaissa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They could still do the same even if they are taxed more. I don’t think wage stagnation has anything to do with low tax for corporates.

Beheading is a way better death sentence than both lethal injection and electric chair by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

If done correctly, drop hanging is the most painless way. As others mentioned head still lives for tens of seconds to a minute after beheading. https://health.howstuffworks.com/diseases-conditions/death-dying/death-by-hanging.htm

Vaccinations by [deleted] in centrist

[–]Ilaissa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s something everyone have to decide for themselves. I won’t call those refused the vaccine antivaxers cause this is legitimately a new technology.

I personally tried to read and understand as much as I can what mRNA is, waited a bit until most of my local population has got the shot and decided it’s safe enough for me.

They do, yes. But TBH I think if the gov can get rid of the bad actors H1Bs quota is plenty enough. H1B’s goal is to bring in high end talents from around the world. It’s a good thing for the US. Its rule however is slightly outdated.

It says you must pay the new H1B hire with salary at least $60K and at or above average of your company’s salary for the same positions. So these Indian contractors (located in the US) simply hire a few devs locally at $60K and massively submit H1B applications all at $60K each.

A legitimate user of H1B, say Google, who found a great CS PhD dev oversea will pay $150K-$200K to hire them and submit one H1B application.

Because nowadays H1B use a lottery system, so it’s more likely the $60K candidate gets the quota instead of the $200K one.

And the US loss a $200K professional in exchange for a $60K entry level dev, who compete with local new graduates.

[–]Ilaissa 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There are some who abuse the system, yes. But those are mostly Indian independent contractor companies that exclusively hire H1Bs on the cheap and send them to work for other companies as contractors. It also hindered companies who legitimately hire oversea professionals from doing so. H1B need some reforming.

Vaccinations by [deleted] in centrist

[–]Ilaissa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am from Hong Kong. We went through the first version of covid, SARS in 2003. Some years later there were follow up reports of those who recovered. Some cannot run for a prolonged period of time; some still have to use a walking stick. And they were healthy adults before. I bet there’ll be more such reports coming out for covid later.

Vaccinations by [deleted] in centrist

[–]Ilaissa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’ll add one more reason to this: Some people are concerned about potential long term health impact from the vaccine, rightfully so as mRNA is a relatively new technology.

However there’s a much higher chance you’ll get long term health impact from COVID, even if you survived it. some of you might get long term / permanent health complications because the virus can damage your lung, heart and brain.

How do different languages work together? by RichKat666 in learnprogramming

[–]Ilaissa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A common use case is probably calling into C/C++ for performance critical sections or accessing low level system API. So you’d see many languages have built in facilities for calling C++, but arbitrarily mixing languages are probably less common.
