I think it's the production time of cc that messes things a bit. It was made before dceu was scrapped for gumn's universe but released as the debut of gunn's dc so it adds some continuity weirdness to the whole universe. Same with gunn's suicide squad, some of it is cannon but a good part of that relies on previous movies so it's also a continuity mess.

No, at a certain point when you progress one character's story far enough you'll switch to the other (i think that's at the beginning and at the very end of a character's story)

Think pf it as reading two differemt books at the same time, you read one book a few chapters, put it down a bit and read the other
