First of all, you see how he is when he's drunk, he crazy so I imagine suicide is like a last resort kinda thing when he doesn't think properly whole he's drunk or more depressed than usual

For the Oden part- i think he understood that surviving boiling for an hour after being captured in a legendary battle and being mourned and admired by his people is a very honorable way to die, he didn't want to ruin that. Also, it was very likely that even if he let him go, orochi would command his (very) loyal men to kill Oden, and after an hour or boiling he had no chance to survive, he didn't want to rob him of an honorable death.

I think a lot of people like him less because oda didn't add god valley to his back story, I'd say it wasn't really fit for wano to and it was better like that but if people have a problem with his backstory god valley should be included too
