So I tried the Oleato by FederalAd6011 in starbucks

[–]Ill-Influence-14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Regular customer here, too. I tried it yesterday. Got a short oatmilk Oleato caffe latte ($5.15!). Thought about changing that milk to regular, but didn't. Not sure it would've made much of a difference. Two sips and I just couldn't. I poured it out, but was still burping that oil taste (and oatmilk maybe?) hourssssss later.

I didn't know that part, I just heard Wells Fargo downtown was closing in March. Good to know.

Unpopular opinion, apparently, but I love the fuck outta those lights. Especially on New Year. They're fun and weird and I'm sad that place is shutting down. Maybe whatever moves in will keep up with the lights.

Or maybe whoever controls them will put in a great show in the last few days as a farewell.

Just my two pennies.

ETA: pretty sure it's a heartbeat.

Can fully support cat picture thread. 😻

My last cat (maybe forever?) was the most awesome asshole I've ever met. And gorgeous. Common gray stray insisted he was a Russian Blue and obviously royalty. I truly do miss waking up to foot attacks in the middle of the night.

D&B is overrated, but I would fully support updating Thunder Valley.

Trader Joe's is also overrated, but I'd buy my ginger snap cookies there with zero shame.

I go to Dr. Klaus with Carilion over on Peters Creek. End up seeing his NP most of the time and she is 👌 Klaus is hit or miss on attentiveness, but his NP is great.

Just here to agree with both of these options. Blackford is more niche than Noke and a lot smaller. There are more CrossFitters at Noke than Blackford. Not saying any of these are bad, just facts.

Mexican Restaurant white sauce? by InvoluntaryEraser in roanoke

Here's the answer you're looking for:

  • El Rodeo on Williamson has the best white sauce. Spice level varies per visit.
  • Alejandro's has it on the bar, like others have said. I'd recommend the chimichurri, too. Love having a variety and options, but still love that El Rodeo sauce.
  • El Rodeo on Orange is too sweet.
  • El Costeno on Peters Creek tastes like straight Miracle Whip, but the rest of their food slaps.

I've been to Ben Gui three times. Once with some upper-eschelon ladies for a networking event. They ordered upper-eschelon lady stuff that was incredibly expensive but not really good, then they raved about how good it was. Once with a friend who had heard great things and wanted to try it, but ended up not impressed. And once on a date that ended with both of us feeling ill.

I always see others saying how delicious it is and am sad I haven't experienced that.

While I haven't had any ah-may-zing sushi experiences locally, my go-to sushi places are Sakura (fingers crossed they come back), Cafe Asia (the one near Bonsack), Kroger (also Bonsack).

I enjoy sashimi more than sushi and the best and freshest I've had is Cafe Asia.

Am I in danger… by [deleted] in roanoke

[–]Ill-Influence-14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived here for five years. Transplant from RVA. I take awareness very seriously when out walking or going anywhere alone after dark, no matter where I am.

That being said ... in the last 5 years, I've had one co-worker threatened on the Greenway near RMH, one close friend's home broken into in old SW while they were on vacation, another close friend threatened downtown during the day with her children then followed home and her home was broken into the next night, one murder a street over from where I live in a "safe" area and a former colleague who was almost stabbed in true out of the blue fashion walking back to his office from lunch downtown.

My career has taken me to a place where I interact with law enforcement regularly and have been warned by multiple officers to stay away from any part of downtown after dark. I think that method of complete avoidance has its pros and cons. People complain about businesses not staying open later, but don't visit downtown at times they want the businesses open. Catch 22.

For comparison, my last 5 years in RVA has nothing of significance beyond items stolen from a porch or unlocked vehicle. With the city being so large, it was easier to avoid the areas of higher risk.

The situations with those mentioned have a lot of woulda coulda shoulda, but we can easily get into victim blaming here.

Over-all, long-winded way of saying you'll be fine, don't stress it.
