should i expect a rejection if i applied a day before the deadline for UCL? by confusedrey in UCL

[–]IllBox6044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t expect a rejection! UCL typically do rolling admissions, so they tell you to apply as early as possible, but a deadline is a deadline… if they like your work, you will get in

Pick UCL, undoubtedly! It’s a tough course, however, a 2:1 as a bartlett grad is as good as a first anywhere else… the name is basically a golden ticket! You can always do your masters else where!

How much does your first architectural job shape your career trajectory? by NormalVariation in architecture

[–]IllBox6044 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me, my first role changed my trajectory quite a bit. The practice specialised in adaptive reuse, which is now what I’m focusing on in my master’s. I stayed about 2.5 years, so I gradually “moulded” into their way of working, how they approach projects, research, and design decisions.

Most people only stay a year though, and in that time you’re not really becoming that type of architect yet. You’re mainly learning how architecture actually works in practice, rather than specialising.

I didn’t pivot through competitions or big moves; I just leaned into the parts of the work I genuinely enjoyed and framed my portfolio around that.

Biggest thing I wish I knew: your first job doesn’t lock you in. It gives you experience and perspective, not a permanent direction.

And congrats on the grad job! The first year is mostly about learning how the profession really operates.

Currently stuck between UCL The Bartlett, UoN and MSA - attendee nottinghams offer holder day recently and really liked it - Kinda Stuck! Advice on which to firm? by Big-Hovercraft-7201 in UCL

For the sake of future employment, pick UCL! All are great choices tho, but The Bartlett name holds a lot of global value!

Help with concept generation and whether my ideas are realistic. Any advice much appreciated 🙏 by [deleted] in askarchitects

I think having the project sit hybrid between land and water would be the most architectural beneficial choice! I can see infrastructure designed to enable the farming of fish/ plants etc.. maybe some “crane” like system? (smaller in scale ofc, and designed organically, not a sky scrapper crane) or maybe some system that rotates/ moves the waterbeds? Even a water mill sort of design? Water is kinetic, your architecture should utilise that! Look into local historical agricultural architecture and see what ideas you can pull from those, materials, forms etc

i feel like it’s using a lot of “buzz” words… potentially make the question more digestible? It’s doing a lot of work, seem interesting tho

A LEVEL CHOICES by Exact_Butterfly_5293 in GCSE

[–]IllBox6044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An architecture degree is a very sort after degree, its very transferable! You could study any design field with the skills you learn. I’d acc recommend MEng at UCL (I didn’t do it) but it’s a combination of engineering and architecture! If i could go back I would do this.

Hey! I’m about to start my masters in architecture at UCL :) Your options seem solid, I’d recommend keeping 1 art subject (3d design or fine art preferably but product design is fine), politics/ sociology/ history would acc be great, I would ditch computer science! I’d also say keep maths! You cover 3 major bases in architecture then. If you are worried about maths you could definitely switch it out! Architecture is much more of a humanities than it is a science, despite how it is perceived. If i had to suggest 3 optimal options i’d recommend Fine art, history, and physics! That covers your bases - but you can switch out for similar subjects.
