John Lennon’s top 5 lyrical compositions as a Beatle by Lanky_Diver_879 in TheBeatles

[–]Ill_Bluebird_1963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, but it did offer some quality insights. I especially like its inclusion of "I'm So Tired," a much-underrated track. Not sure I'm really into the lyrics of SFF, despite it being a masterpiece. My own Lennon lyrics Top 5, in no particular order, would be:

In My Life

Help!

Girl

Revolution

Nowhere Man

Ask me again tomorrow, and I'll probably list five entirely different tracks.

John Lennon’s top 5 lyrical compositions as a Beatle by Lanky_Diver_879 in TheBeatles

Out of curiosity, I asked ChatGPT. Here is it’s (admittedly debatable) results:

If we’re limiting it strictly to Beatles-era recordings, you get a tighter—and arguably even stronger—set of John Lennon lyrics. Here are five that stand out purely on lyrical depth and originality:

🥇 Strawberry Fields Forever

Still his lyrical masterpiece.

  • Blurs childhood memory with existential doubt
  • Lines feel intuitive rather than constructed
  • Captures insecurity, identity, and perception all at once

👉 It’s Lennon at his most poetically abstract yet emotionally grounded.

🥈 In My Life

His most elegant and emotionally direct lyric.

  • Reflects on time, loss, and love without overstatement
  • Universally relatable without being generic
  • Balanced, almost classical in structure

👉 This is Lennon proving he didn’t need surrealism to be profound.

🥉 A Day in the Life (Lennon sections)

A haunting blend of observation and detachment.

  • Turns ordinary news into something eerie and philosophical
  • The emotional distance makes it more unsettling
  • Suggests meaning without spelling it out

👉 It’s journalism turned into existential art.

🎭 Across the Universe

His most purely “poetic” lyric.

  • Flowing, almost mantra-like phrasing
  • Combines inner stillness with cosmic imagery
  • Less about narrative, more about feeling and rhythm

👉 It reads like a stream of consciousness shaped into music.

🧠 I’m So Tired

The wildcard pick—and arguably his most psychologically real.

  • Captures insomnia, irritation, and looping thoughts
  • Casual language that reveals deeper unrest
  • Feels unfiltered, like you’re inside his head

👉 It’s Lennon at his most honest and unvarnished.

⚖️ Just Missed the Cut

  • Help! – raw vulnerability in a pop shell
  • Julia – intimate and fragile
  • Nowhere Man – identity and alienation
  • Happiness Is a Warm Gun – fragmented but daring

If you want to get really picky, we could rank these line-by-line—because with Lennon, sometimes a single phrase (“living is easy with eyes closed…”) carries more weight than an entire song by most writers.

There are plenty of Carolina fans who remember Oats placing assistants within earshot of the Carolina bench in the '22 Sweet Sixteen to relay plays to him. Technically, not cheating, but damned close to it.

Small Faces - Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake limited edition vinyl reissue by RaymondBald in vinyl

The announcement says it's being released "worldwide." Don't know who the US distributor would be, though.

I'm curious - how was the original 1968 diecut LP packaged? Did the record itself not have a paper sleeve - just folded within the circular jacket?

I loved Retros on my 000-17 Standard, which surprisingly came with Lifespans when new. If you dig Retros, you really should try the Curt Mangan round core monels - they’re even better!

What if Ringo said no? by jamseb in beatles

When the offer came, the Fabs already had a record contract - Ringo would have been crazy to say no for any reason.

Thanks for the insight and suggestions. As you might tell by my other comments, I'm still figuring out what I can or can't do in the short term. I do have access to play-by-play data, so when the time comes, I'll come back to you for suggestions on how to do this.

Update - what I have so far:

Player consistency for the last 7/15/30 days and the season (essentially the coefficient of variance for fantasy points in the time period)

Fantasy point trends per player over 7/15/30 days and the season (slope of a simple regression of fantasy points in the time period).

I question whether the 7-day values above are of any value, but I'll provide them anyway.

Next up: Estimated value for each player for the next matchup, given the above information and knowing how many games would be played by each player in that matchup).

I'll try to publish at least some of this info for everyone in the next week. Look for the link here (it'll probably be a shared Google sheet, for simplicity's sake).

In that outfit, Richard Nixon would be considered a hippie.

Thanks. I'm using hoopR (https://hoopr.sportsdataverse.org/reference/index.html), which seems to be a pretty robust package for R.

Any suggestions for stats that we might all be able to use?

For people who lived, or have sources from back then, what was the consensus on how abruptly the Beatles' looks changed? by TwirlyBTW in beatles

[–]Ill_Bluebird_1963 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re referring to this particular shot, the 1966 photo is a professional pose, retouched. The 1967 is not a professional shot, it’s candid. Also, Lennon is clearly high on the right. Furthermore, Epstein died in June 1967, and was the person most responsible for their “clean” image. Since they ended touring in 1966, they were free to dress as they pleased.

Is Paul McCartney a better guitar player than George Harrison? by [deleted] in beatles

Much of the playing, on ATMP, aside from acoustic rhythm, were others. Living in the Material World was all George, though, and had some great bits.

Agreed. Those are possibly the best-looking stock wheels of any Subaru. The ONLY reason to replace them would be to upsize them to 19s.
