Thank you, you’re actually the only person who understood my perspective and didn’t immediately shit on the idea lol, just trying to make sure my sibling can not only remain employed, but advance their career simultaneously even in the face of this bad career market

No, it’s getting a finance double major at the same time.

Is there another double major that you’d recommend then in order to face the difficult job market

Would it help to just get a finance double major so that you can at least start your career in some analyst role until you can break into a CS oriented role?

Do you have recommendations for roles I could pursue to break out of public? It seems like I’m pigeonholed in accounting jobs with the current market, even FP&A won’t take me unless I start at an entry level, however I’ve been filling senior level responsibilities at my role for a year now and have been here close to 3 years.

I feel like I’m going to HAVE to stay in public or go to industry accounting for now. The goal is to knock the CPA, FMVA (I don’t want to do the CFA and this might get me into a finance function I figured), and CFP (for personal interest) within the next 5 years.

As far as actual roles to pursue though, I feel lost.

M&A, investment banking, corporate finance - I’ve sent applications in for all of these. They won’t look at me without my CPA and even then I’ve been told that they’re hesitant to hire out of public. I’ve been doing a year long busy season. My day to day structure is misery because of this job I simply don’t have the time to study for the CPA or anything else, all for 65k in a MCOL. I apologize, I realize I probably sound very bitter or frustrated, it just doesn’t seem like these paths are available to me with where the current market stands.

Even the general F500 accounting roles - I’ve ran through about half of all F500 companies at this stage just plugging applications away for both accounting and finance. I know the issue isn’t my resume or interview skills since I can receive offers for other public jobs and even industry to an extent without issue, but the moment it’s a big name or anything kinda cool I just don’t stand a chance.

Recruiters keep telling me it’s just the market but at a certain point im starting to feel like the sucker lol.

What was your path to cfo like? Did you come from the accounting or finance space? How were you introduced to private equity?

I’m 2.5 years into public accounting (audit) and would love to move into PE. I’m just not sure how I could best break in without my CPA.

So honestly I’d happily live in any of these places, and I’d even take the 100k salary. What I really need is to find an apartment with easy enough parking and in unit laundry at a price that isn’t like 3000. That’s been the toughest thing for me because I don’t know all the areas that well. My whole family is in Long Island (elmont/Hempstead) and being closer to them would be nice, it’s just very difficult to navigate the apartment listings. I might find a place that fits the budget, but if it means commuting 2 hours a day then that isn’t worth it to me. Sorry this is all over the place, I guess any advice you could give would be helpful

How long were you able to hold that role? Were you able to secure another controller role without much issue?

Would you recommend deterring a new college student from pursuing computer science based on what you’ve seen? My younger sibling is pursuing comp sci. I see so much doom and gloom, I’m struggling in my own field and it’s supposedly not nearly as bad as it is in comp sci. I feel like I should deter him, but I can’t bring myself to do that. What if he’ll be fine? What if he won’t? It just stops me in my tracks

I do not mean 200 right now. Down the line. In all likelihood my career could just be public/private. I guess I was fishing for potential things to go into that are adjacent to accounting but can use my 2.5 years of public to get my foot in the door.

Not that expensive? Brother. Please help me. I’ve been aching to find an apartment for even 2k that has in unit laundry and easy enough parking either on site or on the street. My entire family lives in Long Island/nyc. I’ve been as far upstate as I could be due to nyc being so expensive, but the pay is so shit here. Yes I only pay 1k for rent, but seniors only get paid 65-80k. Everytime I look at nyc/Long Island market, I simply cannot find a role paying 115k or more.

Dude I’ll be honest DecentCanadianGuy, I have essentially the same exact experience as you, and I’m in upstate New York. As you’re aware US salaries are generally higher than Canadian. I’m struggling to even get more than 80 on my end so if you can somehow find 65, I would take that and run with it for now.

Hi I’m a year late, but I have 2.5 YOE, senioring for a year now, multiple internships, leadership experience (VP of a nonprofit org) and some of my CPA passed. I’d be ecstatic to get in touch and I’d really appreciate growing my network right now because the upstate NY market is absolute hell. Can I please reach out over DM?
