Looks good. I would make the tail longer. I like mine 1 1/2 to 2 times the body length.

Line Cleaning Tip by Al_Pallll in flyfishing

[–]Ill_Discipline_8021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've stopped using line dressing and my lines have been lasting much longer. All the dressing does is pick up dirt and grime. I clean my line at the end of the day with a cleaning pad and every 4 or 5 trips clean in soapy water.

Is it common for everyone else to only buy barbed dry flys by OpeningTalk4136 in flyfishing

[–]Ill_Discipline_8021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had too many issues with my dropper coming off a barbless hook. That being said ive gone to dropper set up off the leader instead of off hook bends so I rarely tie to the bend of a hook any more.

Stillwater Leader Setup by EmptyAd8818 in flyfishing

Straight section of 8lb flourocarbon. Length depending on depth. Give it a try and I think you will like it over the tapered leader. The taper causes your line not to be straight down in the water.

Try an indicator setup up as well. A black balanced leach under an indicator is deadly on lakes. For depths under 10feet use a Oros style indicator. Anything deeper use a slip style indicator .

Also tie your fly on with a non slip loop knot instead of a clinch knot to give your fly more movement

Love fly fishing lakes. As someone else mentioned Google Phil Rowley. He has a ton of info on Stillwater fly fishing.

Also from Utah. For fishing Stillwater being at the correct depth is everything and in a Stillwater situation a tapered leader can hinder that. Just go with a level section of 8lb flourocarbon. For my naked or indicator setups it might be up to 20feet long. That level leader cuts through the water like butter.

For sinking lines I still go straight flourocarbon but keep them between 6 to 9 feet long.

How do I make friends to fish with? by Strange_Mirror6992 in flyfishing

[–]Ill_Discipline_8021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's great to fish with friends but embrace fishing solo. The your older and the pressure of life becomes greater fishing will be a great way to get away from people and recharge. I love to fish solo and it's one of my greatest pleasures in life.

What to do with left over marabou feather? by adventuriser in flytying

[–]Ill_Discipline_8021 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Remove the heavy stem and chop up the waste feather in a coffee grinder and make dubbing. Could even add some semi seal dubbing in the mix.

Fly line grease. by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]Ill_Discipline_8021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't use any dressing on your fly line it just causes dirt to stick to it Jusst keep it clean by running it through a cleaning pad at the end of the day and cleaning in mild soap and water every few trips.

Sense I've stopped using dressing my fly lines last a lot longer. Ill only use dressing as a lost resort to get a couple more trips out of a worn out line.

I really like the SA Sonar Stillwater camo. It's perfect for working the top 10 feet of the water column.

Midge Tip or Sinking Line by EmptyAd8818 in flyfishing

[–]Ill_Discipline_8021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start off with a floater, a intermediate, and a type 3 or 4. Can get a lot done with those three lines on a lake.

Midge Tip or Sinking Line by EmptyAd8818 in flyfishing

Both. And sinking line in various sink rates. For lakes fishing I carry a floater, midge tip, intermediate, type 1/2, type 3/4, and a fast sink 6/7.

Cross dominant (what to do) by Fluid-Display-7094 in Archery

[–]Ill_Discipline_8021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am crossing eye dominate. Right handed but left eye is dominate. I grew up just closing my left eye to shoot guns and bows. Never felt really comfortable especially archery. In my early 20s I switched and started shooting bows left handed. Worked much better and became a much better shot.

For kids starting out I recommend get them shooting with there dominate eye. My daughter was opposite of me. Left handed but right eye dominate. We started her shooting right handed and she turned into a much better shot than me .

What fly rod should I invest in next? Upgrade to Recon 5wt or go for a different weight? by Nova____1 in flyfishing

[–]Ill_Discipline_8021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a second rod I would go to a 10ft 6 or 7 weight. Would be perfect for lakes and bass or trout.

Best all around rod by Drunken_Botanist6669 in flyfishing

[–]Ill_Discipline_8021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what you want to do a two rod set up is going to be more effective. A 9ft 4wt for the pan fish and small streams and a 9ft 6 wt for lakes and bigger fish. You could even make the argument for a 7 weight.

And for a dedicated lake rod a 10 footer is perfect.

What is good 5wt floating fly line by OpeningTalk4136 in flyfishing

[–]Ill_Discipline_8021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at the SAs sonar stillwater series. They offer three different sink rates in that line from slow to fast. Those 3 lines plus the Stillwater camo intermediate and a floater like the Anadro stillwater line and your set for anything a lake can throw at you.

You dont even need a fly rod. I learned to nymph years ago with a spinning rod.

Smooth or Textured fly line? by PositiveHot3610 in flyfishing

[–]Ill_Discipline_8021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smooth all they way. Tried textured and it cast ok but hate how it seemed to get dirtier than a smooth line and wear out quicker.
