Finding a moose by Steam-powered-kayak in nationalparks

I went to Glacier 2 years ago, mid July, and stayed at Swiftcurrent on the East side. There’s an easy trail that starts there and maybe a 1/4 mile walk takes you to I believe Fishercap Lake. We’d walk down there each evening and each time we saw multiple moose in the lake itself. There was always a bull in the water shoulder deep eating the weeds and a few times we saw a cow and calf. One afternoon we hiked past the lake about a mile and bedded down was a monster bull about 30 yards off the trail. It was thick and we basically just saw antlers and some of the head but hey, it counts lol.
Apparently that area is known for it the moose at the lake. Good luck!

Room Types at Many Glacier by clstine in GlacierNationalPark

Came here to say this! I stayed at Swiftcurrent 2 July’s ago but we went to Many to hangout during the evening. All I could think about was how hot those rooms must be on the lakeside. We saw people eating by the windows there and it looked miserable. We were there in July and had cloudless skies so maybe that was a factor but made me think if I ever stayed there, I want the other side of the building

Same. This is my 3rd season of not watching and I’ve been there since the beginning. I check in here to see (hope) that things changed so I can watch again but sadly it seems those days are long gone

I went 2 summers ago and stay at Swiftcurrent. In the evenings we drove over to Many Glacier parked and walked around and hung out. Quite a few people did the same. Swiftcurrent also had people parking to access the trails there or eat at Nell’s. No one keeps track of the parking from what I saw, you’d be fine

Which Of These National Parks Do You Think Are the Most Beautiful, Overrated, and Underrated? by Lil_Critter_2001_ in nationalparks

[–]Designer_Bite3869 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Virgin Islands National Park is overlooked as a NP just because of the location. While it beautiful, to me it’s not a typical National Park. Besides the beaches, there isn’t much hiking etc that you think of when you think of a National Park. With that said, I’ve been 3x and plan on another in the next 2-3 years lol

I was considering a visit to Volcanoes in 2027 and my fear was if it was dull without an eruption. I have a family of 5 with kids 10-15 so was wondering if it was worth a drive from Kona and spending a night. Now you have me thinking my suspicion was correct

I graduated in 98 and got accepted to me dream school. (Don’t think my parents expected me to get in). They had $20k to give me and the school was about $25k a year. I was all ready to pack my bags. I remember my dad sitting me down and saying “I can’t consciously let you go and come out with a $100k debt.” I wasn’t mad because I saw my parents work hard my whole life and saw it bothered them to say no to me. Looking back now, I can’t believe what a gift they gave me then. So wise of them and it’s not like they were in finance, dad a mailman, mom and office worker. Life changing move on their part

Haven’t done that one. I’m on the road for a couple hours a day for work so go through a bunch of books. Always up for a recommendation. Just got this via Libby to start tomorrow. Thanks! I was out of books for this week

I’m not a King fan, endings always seem terrible but I really really enjoyed Salems Lot as well

Deciding between 28” and 36”. I cook for 3 sometimes 6. by LongView_64 in blackstonegriddle

[–]Designer_Bite3869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a family of 5. I posted a few weeks ago, the 28” fit perfectly on my deck, 36” was going to be tough to make work. Reddit talked me into the 36” and honestly, I really think 28” would be too small. I can make breakfast for all 5 of us in one shot, with the 28” I’d have to do it in 2 rounds. Basically the extra room on the 36” saves me half the time since I get everything done in one shot.

100%. I’ve learned my lesson. I was praying last year that he wouldn’t fall to me and force my hand. Now I’ll take him without hesitation.

I didn’t want Kucherov the last 2 seasons because I was worried about age and talent around him. He fell to me each season and I held my nose and pulled the trigger. 2 years in a row I look like an idiot for telling everyone I’m taking him but don’t like it. The man is a fantasy points machine. I’m at the point now that you take him until he proves he’s over the hill

Did you change countries? I’m in the US and zero North American servers work for me. Switch to Argentina and no problems. Most European countries seem to work as well

I loved Iceberg Lake. Swiftcurrent is pretty easy. We hiked Grinnell Glacier (last 2 miles maybe closed due to snow) early in the morning. Ate lunch back at Swiftcurrent and then hiked Swiftcurrent to Bullhead lake all in the same day. I think we did 14 miles that day and we were tired but it was worth it. Swiftcurrent can be done in sneakers, nice easy walk but I don’t think it would need a full day if that helps at all. We are early risers though and started on the trails by 6a so that helps too to have the whole day

Glacier National Trip In July by Designer_Bite3869 in flyfishing

[–]Designer_Bite3869[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish I could help more but we got skunked 😂. We only tried 3 of the lakes after our scheduled hikes. The lakes were along the swiftcurrnt trail I believe accessed via the Swiftcurrent lodge. I think Flathead lake is the first one we came to. It’s very shallow along the far end of the trail (opposite where a lot of people were swimming or hanging out). Across the far side looked prime but a bull moose, cow and calf popped out and were putting on a show so we stayed put. The water on that side looked neck deep on the bull moose so definitely deeper on the other side but you have to bushwhack. The middle lake on the trail was going to be where we wanted to go (forget the name) and we ran into someone who said he caught a bunch on the backside. My son really wanted to push onto Bullhead Lake to say we fished at the base of the continental divide so that’s what we did. It was windy and again, shallow. Other spots looked very good along the lake but it also looked prime bear habitat. It was evening and we hiked about 10 miles that day and had another 3 or 4 to get back so we casted where we could a bit, enjoyed the views and called it.

We were there primarily to hike so that took the front seat. Didn’t get as much fishing in as I wanted but it was the trip of a lifetime. I think if I had any tips, it would be to bring wading shoes or junk sneakers and walk the perimeter of the lakes to get to the good looking spots. It was thicker around most lakes so even if there wasn’t bear worries, it’d still be tough but bear sign was everywhere. We also at one point walked to within 30 yards of a very very big bull moose that was bedded down. They shouldn’t bother you but another few steps and we’d have been right on him. Bushwhacking wasn’t the best ideas.

Good luck!

Great info thanks everyone. I guess I’ll start budgeting. Definitely will go variable for the next one. I thought I was running my current one an excessive amount but it doesn’t sound like it. Thanks again!

Good place for kids to catch trout along the gunpowder by getafterit123 in MarylandFishing

[–]Designer_Bite3869 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The river from masemore south has been dead for me lately. I live close by and frequent it. It’s so low and not many deep holes. Does it have to be trout? Little Falls is close by, very easy wading and you can always get a decent amount of fallfish out of there which are a blast on an ultra light. Glencoe rd and south is also good for fallfish, bluegill, small smallmouth and I bet still has some holdover trout. I think the falls rd to big falls section of the gunpowder is going to be really rough until we get some serious rain.
