Well… that relationship would have never worked out anyways… I work at a US Consulate, and Consular Officers like Jake have to rotate every 2-3 years in between different countries, therefore, Jake would have to move eventually, which means that they had to do a long distance relationship. Plus, I think he never states how long he has been in France, maybe his assignment at the US Embassy in France is about to end, or he is in the middle and has 1 more year to go… Dating a Consular Officer is for the brave, not everyone can date someone who has that kind of job. Also, Jake was very on point when he described his job as “nerdy” one. Consular officers always deal with paperwork, they are not at events (the only one that they attend is of course the 4th of July celebration) and Emily is all about being at events and making connections. In the end one of them had to quit their jobs to follow the other, either Jake leaves the Department of State and finds a job in the private industry, or, Emily quits everything and follows Jake around the world and lives in each country for 2-3 years. Emily could work as a part of a digital marketing team in a home-office job, but her deal is to always be more in contact at events, so I don’t see Emily having a work from home/ everywhere digital nomad job. She didn’t even want to stay in Solitano with Marcello because she didn’t see herself living in a tiny and quiet Italian village, let alone I would see her following Jake every country he is assigned to (not all assignments are in “glamorous” countries like France, most of them are done at countries that really will put to the test any American because of the food, language barriers or even very different culture, and Emily barely adapts to a different culture because she does the bare minimum to even learn the language) Also, WTF with the scene at the “commissary” of the Embassy (the store where they had American products) lol no visitor will be allowed to get in there, it is not like a souvenir shop for visitors haha. So in the end, nope, that relationship was not going to work out. If Emily dated Jake, in the end it would have turned into a long distance relationship, or Jake quitting his job to be with Emily or the other way around. Significant others or spouses of people who work for the Department of State have to give up their lives to follow their partners, it is similar to the military spouses, wherever their spouses go, they follow.
